  • A study result of buckling reliability is presented for the axially compressed imperfect elastic cylinder. Multi-mode analysis program is developed from Karman-Donnell Equation for the calculation of the buckling load of the cylindrical she1l. Geometric intial imperfection is approximated by double Fourier series of which coefficients are assumed random variables with jointly normal distribution characteristics. Crude Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to calculate the probabilistic failure properties of several cases with various imperfection Conditions.

  • The conventional cold-heading process for the production of a bolt-shaped product is composed of some process and two or three blows heading. The strength of a bolt-shaped product produced by multi-blow heading depends on the working conditions of the heading process such as preforming die angle, corner-radius of the necked portion of product, and the reduction in height during pre-forming. Arigid-plastic finite-element program(RDHPSC) has been coded and the program testified by comparison with the results of experimentation. A method of testing the optimum die-conditions in the double-blow heading process by use of RDHPSC analysis is discussed a fundamental structures of CAD/CAPP system for two-blow heading process is discussed.

  • This paper describes two different theories used to model the scattering of ultrasound by a volumetric flaw and a crack-like flaw. The elastodynamic Kirchhoff approximation (EKA) and the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) are applied respectively to a cylindrical cavity and a semi-infinite crack. These methods are known as high frequency approximations. The 2-D elastodynamic scattering problems of a plane wave incident on these model defects are considered and the scattered fields are expressed in terms of the reflection and diffraction coefficients. The ratio of the scattered far field amplitude to the incident wave amplitude is computed as a function of the angular location and compared with the boundary element solutions.

  • In the present study, the characteristics of laser ultrasound in the ablation regime are investigated using simulations and experiments. The laser ultrasonic technique has been recognized as a noncontact method in the field of nondestructive tests (NDTs). In hostile environments (such as hot temperatures), this method has various advantages over the conventional contact ultrasonic method. In particular, in the ablation regime, the laser ultrasonic technique is suitable for inspecting internal defects because of the high amplitude and directivity of the longitudinal wave. In this paper, a simulation model for laser ultrasound in the ablation regime was developed. This model was subsequently applied to a defective specimen using the B-scan method to locate defects. Finally, we performed an experimental test to verify the simulation results. Consequently, the simulation demonstrated good agreement with the experimental test.

  • Since the kinetic energy is dissipated through plastic deformation energy generated in expanding process of the tube by a die. In order to successfully absorb the kinetic energy there should be no buckling in the expansion tube during expanding process. The buckling instability of the expansion tubes is affected by the initial boundary conditions, tube thickness and length. In this study, the effects of the tube thickness except length and initial boundary condition on the buckling instability are studied using a finite element method. In addition, Analysis procedure for nonlinear post-buckling analysis of expansion tube is established. There are three kinds of finite element analysis procedures for buckling analysis of expansion tube, quasi-static analysis, linear buckling analysis and nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The effect of the geometry imperfections defined as linear superimposition of buckling modes is considered in the nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the buckling load increase with increase of thickness of tube and geometry imperfection. Finial buckling shapes are changed with respect to the geometry imperfection.

  • Projectile can be damaged during the storage and handling. Maximum range calculation of the ammunition was performed on the assumption that each projectiles have 1.5mm/3.3mm axisymetric dent on the surface. Drag coefficient for trajectory calculation was delivered from CFD using commercial software FLUENT. In the result of CFD, damaged projectiles those have 1.5mm/3.3mm axisymetric dent have similar drag coefficient compare with normal projectile in the region of subsonic. But, in supersonic region, drag coefficient was increased 3%, 9% each in average. In the result of trajectory calculation, Maximum rage was decreased 1%, 3% each.

  • Nondestructive method can include both testing itself and analysis or evaluation of the testing results. Although vast amount of testing can be accomplished in a fairly short amount of time due to the advancement of electronic technology. it is really difficult matter to identify whether the indication found during testing corresponds to be a real defect. Thus, in ultrasonic testing, advanced digital signal processing techniques have been widely studied in order to identify the shape of the defect during testing, and one of the signal processing techniques, synthetic aperture focusing technique(SAFT) was tried for holes machined in carbon steel plate in this study. Result showed that signal to noise ratio has been improved considerably compared to the result from original RF signals.
