  • The ordinary least squares regression method of Haseman and Elston(1972) is most widely used in genetic linkage studies for continuous traits of sib pairs. Kruglyak and Lander(1995) suggested a statistic which appears to be a nonparametric counterpart to the Haseman and Elston(1972)'s regression method, but in fact these two methods are quite different. In this paper the relationships between these two methods are described and will be compared by simulation studies. One of the characteristics of the sib-pair linkage study is that the explanatory variable has only three different values and thus dependent variable is heavily replicated in each value of the explanatory variable. We propose a weighted least squares regression method which is more appropriate to this situation and the efficiency of the weighted regression in genetic linkage study was explored with normal and non-normal simulated continuous traits data. Simulation studies demonstrated that the weighted regression is more powerful than other tests.

  • Regression analysis is a well-known statistical technique useful to explain the relationship between response variable and predictor variables. In particular, Researchers are interested in comparing the regression coefficients(intercepts and slopes) of the models in two independent populations. The Chow test, proposed by Gregory Chow, is one of the most commonly used methods for comparing regression models and for testing the presence of a structural break in linear models. In this study, we propose the use of permutation method and compare it with Chow test analysis for testing the equality of two independent linear regression models. Then simulation study is conducted to examine the powers of permutation test and Chow test.

  • Fisher's classical method for combining independent p-values from continuous distributions is widely used but it is known to be inadequate for combining p-values from discrete probability distributions. Instead, the discrete analog of Fisher's classical method is used as an alternative for combining p-values from discrete distributions. In this paper, firstly we obtain p-values from discrete probability distributions associated with multi-sample location test data (Fisher-Pitman test and Kruskall-Wallis test data) by permutation method, and secondly combine the permutaion p-values by the discrete analog of Fisher's classical method. And we finally compare the combined p-values from both the discrete analog of Fisher's classical method and Fisher's classical method.

  • Typical Nonparametric methods for randomized block design with replications are two methods proposed by Mack (1981) and Mack and Skillings (1980). This method is likely to cause information loss because it uses the average of repeated observations instead of each repeated observation in the processing of each block. In order to compensate for this, we proposed a test method using linear placement statistics, which is a score function applied to the joint placement method proposed by Chung and Kim (2007). Monte Carlo simulation study is adapted to compare the power with previous methods.

  • For clinical trials, it is common to compare the placebo and new drug. The method of calculating a sample size for two independent populations are the t-test that is used for parametric methods, and the Wilcoxon rank-sum test that is used in the non-parametric methods. In this paper, we propose a method that is using Kim's (1994) statistic power based on the linear placement statistic, which was proposed by Orban and Wolfe (1982). We also compare the sample size for the proposed method with that for using Wang et al. (2003)'s sample size formula which is based on Wilcoxon rank-sum test, and with that of t-test for parametric methods.

  • There are many areas of applications where Gumbel distribution are employed such as environmental sciences, system reliability and hydrology. The goodness-of-fit test for Gumbel distribution is very important in environmental sciences, system reliability and hydrology data analysis. Therefore, we propose the two test statistics to test goodness-of-fit for the Gumbel distribution based on the generalized Lorenz curve. We compare the new test statistic with the Anderson - Darling test, Cramer - vonMises test, and modified Anderson - Darling test in terms of the power of the test through by Monte Carlo method. As a result, the new test statistics are more powerful than the other test statistics. Also, we propose new graphic method to goodness-of-fit test for the Gumbel distribution based on the generalized Lorenz curve.

  • When thousands of hypotheses are tested simultaneously, the probability of rejecting any true hypotheses increases, and large multiplicity problems are generated. To solve these problems, researchers have proposed different approaches to multiple testing methods, considering family-wise error rate (FWER), false discovery rate (FDR) or false nondiscovery rate (FNR) as a type I error and some test statistics. In this article, we discuss Bonferroni (1960), Holm (1979), Benjamini and Hochberg (1995) and Benjamini and Yekutieli (2001) procedures based on T statistics, modified T statistics or local-pooled-error (LPE) statistics. We also consider Sun and Cai (2007) procedure based on Z statistics. These procedures are compared in the simulation and applied to Arabidopsis microarray gene expression data to identify differentially expressed genes.

  • An adaptive seamless Phase II/III clinical trial design enables a reduction in the sample size (in comparison to a conventional design) that also shortens the clinical development time. It is also very effective in clinical trials since it can have higher statistical power than Phase III alone. In this study, we use extensive simulation studies to compare several multiple hypothesis testing methods that can help select the best doses in a Phase II study along with several methods to combine p-values of the Phase II and Phase III study.
