  • The horizontal response spectra using the observed ground motions from the recent more than 19 macro earthquakes were analysed and then were compared to both the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings (1997). 130 horizontal ground motions, without considering soil types, were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that response spectrum have strong dependency on epicentral distance. The results also showed that the horizontal response spectra revealed much higher values for frequency bands above 5 Hz than Reg. Guide (1.60). The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Response Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that the vertical response spectra revealed much higher values for the frequency bands below 0.3 second than the Korean Standard Response Spectrum (SD soil condition). These spectral values dependent on frequency could be related to characteristics of the domestic crustal attenuation and the effect of each site amplification. However, through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the conservation of horizontal seismic design response spectrum should be considered more significantly for the frequency bands above 5 Hz.

  • The diffuse attenuation coefficient for down-welling irradiance $K_d({\lambda})$, which is the propagation of down-welling irradiance at wavelength ${\lambda}$ from surface to a depth (z) in the ocean, and underwater visibility are important optical parameters for ocean studies. There have been several studies on $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility around the world, but only a few studies have focused on these properties in the Korean sea. Therefore, in the present study, we studied $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility around the coastal area of the Yellow Sea, and developed $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility algorithms for ocean color satellite sensor. For this research we conducted a field campaign around the Yellow Sea from $19{\sim}22$ September, 2006 and there we obtained a set of ocean optical and environmental data. From these datasets the $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility algorithms were empirically derived and compared with the existing NASA SeaWiFS $K_d({\lambda})$ algorithm and NRL (Naval Research Laboratory) underwater visibility algorithm. Such comparisons over a turbid area showed small difference in the $K_d({\lambda})$ algorithm and constants of our result for underwater visibility algorithm showed slightly higher values.

  • The simultaneous-source full waveform inversion improves the applicability of full waveform inversion by reducing the computational cost. Since this technique adopts simultaneous multi-source for forward modeling, unwanted events remain in the residual seismograms when the receiver geometry of field acquisition is different from that of numerical modeling. As a result, these events impede the convergence of the full waveform inversion. In particular, the streamer-type data with limited offsets is the most difficult data to apply the simultaneous-source technique. To overcome this problem, the global-correlation-based objective function was suggested and it was successfully applied to the simultaneous-source full waveform inversion in time domain. However, this method distorts residual wavefields due to the modified objective function and has a negative influence on the inversion result. In addition, this method has not been applied to the frequency-domain simultaneous-source full waveform inversion. In this paper, we apply a timedamping function to the observed and modeled data, which are used to compute global correlation, to minimize the distortion of residual wavefields. Since the damped wavefields optimize the performance of the global correlation, it mitigates the distortion of the residual wavefields and improves the inversion result. Our algorithm incorporates the globalcorrelation-based full waveform inversion into the frequency domain by back-propagating the time-domain residual wavefields in the frequency domain. Through the numerical examples using the streamer-type data, we show that our inversion algorithm better describes the velocity structure than the conventional global correlation approach does.

  • The IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor network is composed of the unique sensor devices to monitor and collect physical or environmental conditions. The interests in a positioning technology, which is one of the environment monitoring technologies, are gradually increased according to the development of the sensor technology and IT infrastructure. Generally, it is difficult for the positioning system using RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) based implementation to get accurate position because of obstacles, RF wave's delay and multipath. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the improved positioning technologies for RSSI-based positioning system. This paper also proposes the enhanced scheme to improve the accuracy of positioning system by applying the Gaussian Filter algorithm, which is widely used for enhancing the performance of image processing system. For the implementation of proposed scheme, we firstly make a look-up tables, which represent the distance between target node and master node and corresponding RSSI value of each target node which are recorded as an average value after investigating the characteristics of attenuation of transmitted signal By applying the pre-determined look-up tables and Gaussian Filtering in the proposed scheme, we analyzed the positioning performance and compared with other conventional RSSI-based positioning algorithms.

  • New concept of fine dust measurement method is suggested based on ultrasonic scattering. These days, fine dust has been social problem in Korea, and many researches has been conducted including the area structural maintenance. Conventional measurement system such as optical scattering and semiconductor has a limit from environmental factors like relative humidity. However, ultrasound is based on mechanical waves, which perturb mechanical properties of medium such as density and elastic constants. Using the advantage, the algorithm for fine dust measurement is derived and evaluated using 2-D finite difference method. The numerical analysis simulates ultrasonic wave propagation inside multiple scattering medium like fine dust in air. Signal processing scheme is also suggested and the results show that the error of the algorithm is around minimum of 0.7 and maximum of 24.9 in the number density unit. It is shown that cross-section of fine dust is a key parameter to improve the accuracy of algorithm.

  • This paper presents the effect of numerical parameters, such as grid size and grid ratio, on the outflow hydrograph of a unit-width plane in the linear Muskingum-Cunge method. The numerical results depend on Courant number C and cell Reynolds number D, two physically and numerically meaningful parameters. As C approache 1 and D increases, the numerical dispersion-relating oscillations are difficult to occur. The numerical oscillations occur in the front of a propagating wave for C < 1, while smaller oscillations occur behind the wave for C > 1 due to the numerical diffusion effect. For a plane with a small value of characteristic reach length L (e.g., a steep plane), the numerical solution of the Muskingum-Cunge method is similar to that of the kinematic wave method, which shows no wave attenuation. However, for a plane with a large value of L (e.g., a mild plane), the Muskingum-Cunge method leads to the diffusion waves which are essentially independent of the Courant number. Accordingly, the Muskingum-Cunge method will be suited for the routing of the catchment with relatively mild slopes.

  • A problem of ground subsidence has been a focus of our research over the past 3 years. The purpose of this study is to investigate the disturbed stratigraphic structure by mining and to separate the possible ground subsidence area using shallow seismic reflection survey and processing. To overcome the problems such as the distortion and attenuation of seismic signal caused by ground disturbance and to acquire the high frequency data, an array with short spacing (0.3m) for both the shot and receivers, yielding near-offset (<30m) and CMP spacing of 0.15m was implemented. Data were acquired along the survey line with length of about 43m by fixed receiver array. By considering statics caused by the ground disturbance and offset distribution of data, careful processing steps such as muting and residual statics correction were applied for successful shallow reflection imaging. By correlating the ground subsidence data and stack section, possible subsidence zone could be interpreted quantitatively.

  • In this study, we developed reflection tomography inversion algorithm using Straight Ray Technique (SRT) which can calculate travel time easily and fast for complex geological structure. The inversion process begins by setting the initial velocity model as a constant velocity model that hat only impedance boundaries. The inversion process searches a layer-interface structure model that is able to explain the given data satisfactorily by inverting to minimize data misfit. For getting optimal solution, we used Gauss-Newton method that needed constructing the approximate Hessian matrix. We also applied the Marquart-Levenberg regularization method to this inversion process to prevent solution diverging. The ability of the method to resolve typical target structures was tested in a synthetic salt dome inversion. Using the inverted velocity model, we obtained the migration image close to that of the true velocity model.

  • The types of dam-break have been classified as instantaneous and gradual failure. Equations for estimating the peak outflow have been derived respectively as a metric unit. New dimensionless routing curves have been deveoloped based on the distance parameter which has been used in SMPDBK and hydro-geometric characteristics of dams and reservoirs in Korea. These suggested curves can be used for any case of the flow of supercritical or subcritical. The computed peak flowrate shows the trend of decreasing dependence on the Froude numbers as it increases. These curves are applied to Hyogi dam. and the results have good agreements with the data observed in the peak discharges, peak elevations and flood travel time. The simplified dam-break model in this study would contribute effectively to forecast the dam-break flood in this country with minimum informations in a short time.

  • The absorption coefficients of various length bundles of straws simulating perforated material were studied both theoretically and experimentally. For the theoretical predictions Zwikker and Kosten's theory was modified by adapting Biot's theory based on Poiseuille flow. The experimental data were collected using an impedance tube where the attenuation along the length of the tube was considered. The theoretically predicted values agreed very well with the experimentally measured ones for frequencies lower than 700Hz with bundles shorter than 120mm in length placed against the rigid end of the impedance tube. Configurations with an air gap between the end of a bundle and the rigid end were also investigated. Absorption coefficients were higher for 150mm bundles than for those of combined/air gap configurations with a total length of 150mm. Also for the fixed bundle lengths, absorption was found to increase with increasing air gap.
