  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influences of extreme flood on urban stream's habitat environment at Shincheon stream in Daegu. In case of Shincheon stream, as any extreme floods have not flowed over the artificial bank, an extreme flood have an effects on inner part of confined channel. To make riparian park along Shincheon channel, Concrete and rubber weirs are constructed. These weirs interrupted flow of running water as obstacles during extreme flood, and running water moved aside into and destructed banks of lower-flow-channel. In reach of no weir, as all small-scale topographic bedforms were eliminated, habitat environment of river ecosystem was simplified, and biodiversity of river ecosystem was decreased. As simplified riverbed become irregular bedforms through frequent small-scale-floods, river ecosystem will become vigorous.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine how European textbooks reflect Seoul nowadays. The study focuses on the trend of textbooks in main European countries, such as England, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. They tend to describe Seoul as one of the mega cities with urban problems, and introduces the city as an economic center which is responsible for interaction with other mega cities. Besides, Seoul is also described as less competitive city compared to others, and its history and cultural resources are not paid attention. Despite everything, it is fortunate that there are very few errors in descriptions of Seoul. In future I expect that descriptions of Seoul in European textbooks are enhanced in not only economic aspects of Seoul but also historic and cultural aspects of Seoul and then European textbooks get more reliable contents to inform Korea.

  • This study examines the emerging global city-regions theory and suggests its implications for regional development policy in Korea. Global city-regions defined as an economic and political organization of metropolitan regions or a new scale of urban organization with polycentric structure, is appreciated as a new regionalist model of development in the globalization era. In Korea, the application of global city-regions model is required particularly for strengthening the international competitiveness of metropolitan areas except the capital region including Seoul, and resolving inequalities between the capital region and non-capital regions. However, Institutional revolution including consolidation of Shi(metropolitan area) and Do(province), and devolution should be preceded above all things to develop metropolitan cities such as Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon toward global city-regions.

  • New urbanization different from the manufacturing based urban growth has been widely discussed in post-modern city, consumption city and others to reflect the urban changes in qualitative manner. Urbanization stage models consider large cities to be in mature stage, reurbanization and the stages are assumed to be experienced successively in lower sized cities. However, since the industrial restructuring implies new urbanization experiences, this study examines new urbanization in diverse aspects such as the population change and the geographic and social characteristics of commuters and migrants for the 6 large cities in Korea. Seoul follows the urbanization stages in order while other 5 large cities are divergent in their transition from the industrial city. Regional large cities reveal broad reverse commuting and selective in-migration of economically active households for better work and housing opportunities available in central cities. Similar to the consumption city thesis with enhanced cultural and recreational amenities in western cities, the widening urban residential function including housing and other services is a new urbanization characteristic of large cities in Korea.
