  • In this paper, a stabilized control algorithm for the large rotating stand of a long-range surveillance radar (LRSR) system is introduced. The stabilized control algorithm for this large rotating stand system was designed using mathematical plant modeling. The LRSR system is located on high ground and has a wide surface, making it susceptible to the effects of wind, which increases the bearing friction and reduces the stability of the rotating stand. The disturbance caused by the wind was analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in this study. The results of the CFD analysis were used to construct a control algorithm for the disturbance . The performance of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated experimentally and through simulations. The plant model and the control algorithm were constructed in Matlab/Simulink.

  • A hydraulic dipod platform is used for tracking and stabilizing an antenna system to designate a satellite on a moving vehicle. The 2-DOF controller is very well suited to this controller design object because it is more flexible than the 1-DOF controller when the design object is not only the consideration between stabilizing and tracking but also the trade-off between performance and robustness. The 2-DOF controller synthesis based on the $H_{\infty}$ framework is divided into two design procedures. In this hydraulic dipod platform example, the single-step method shows better performance whereas the two-step method shows better robustness. The difference between these two synthesis results is compared using the structural property of the interconnection system matrix.

  • In this paper we propose an effective feature compensation scheme based on the speech model in order to achieve robust speech recognition. The proposed feature compensation method is based on parallel combined mixture model (PCMM). The previous PCMM works require a highly sophisticated procedure for estimation of the combined mixture model in order to reflect the time-varying noisy conditions at every utterance. The proposed schemes can cope with the time-varying background noise by employing the interpolation method of the multiple mixture models. We apply the‘data-driven’method to PCMM tot move reliable model combination and introduce a frame-synched version for estimation of environments posteriori. In order to reduce the computational complexity due to multiple models, we propose a technique for mixture sharing. The statistically similar Gaussian components are selected and the smoothed versions are generated for sharing. The performance is examined over Aurora 2.0 and speech corpus recorded while car-driving. The experimental results indicate that the proposed schemes are effective in realizing robust speech recognition and reducing the computational complexities under both simulated environments and real-life conditions.

  • Digital watermarking has drawn extensive attention for protecting digital contents from unauthorized copying. This paper proposes a new watermarking scheme in frequency domain for copyright protection of digital audio. In our proposed watermarking system, the original audio is segmented into non-overlapping frames. Watermarks are then embedded into the selected prominent peaks in the magnitude spectrum of each frame. Watermarks are extracted by performing the inverse operation of watermark embedding process. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is robust against various kinds of attacks such as noise addition, cropping, resampling, re-quantization, MP3 compression, and low pass filtering. Our proposed watermarking system outperforms Cox's method in terms of imperceptibility, while keeping comparable robustness with the Cox's method. Our proposed system achieves SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) values ranging from 20 dB to 28 dB. This is in contrast to Cox's method which achieves SNR values ranging from only 14 dB to 23 dB.

  • This paper describes new moving target detection technique combining two algorithms to detect targets and reject clutters in video frame images for surveillance system: One obtains the region of moving target using phase correlation method using $N{\times}M$ sub-block images in frequency domain. The other uses adaptive threshold using learning weight for extracting target candidates in subtracted image. The block region with moving target can be obtained using the characteristics that the highest value of phase correlation depends on the movement of largest image in block. This technique can be used in camera motion environment calculating and compensating camera movement using FFT phase correlation between input video frame images. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm accurately detects target(s) with a low false alarm rate in variety environment using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve.

  • This paper describes the vision-based system to track road signs from within a moving vehicle. The proposed system has the standard architecture with particle filter due to its robust tracking performance in complex environment. In the case of tracking road signs in real environment, it has a great difficulty in predicting time series data by reason of an occlusion due to an obstacle and the rapid change of objects on roads. To overcome this problem and improve the tracking performance, this paper proposes the algorithm using an autoregressive model as an state transition model which has affine parameters as states and using robust statistics for determining occlusion due to obstacles. The experiments of this paper show that the proposed method is efficient for real time tracking of road signs and performs well in road signs under occlusion due to obstacles.

  • In optical fiber communications, several newly-developed signal formats are used to obtain the best performance within limited spectral bandwidth. CSRZ (carrier-suppressed return-to-zero) format is one of the new signal formats, which has better spectral efficiency and better robustness to dispersion than RZ (return-to-zero) format. Thus it is widely used for demonstrating high-speed optical communication systems. In an earlier research, we proposed a clock-extraction method of CSRZ signal to monitor chromatic dispersion. However, the clock-frequency component extracted by the clock-extraction method can be affected by the bandwidth of a transmitter or a receiver. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the effect of bandwidth on the chromatic dispersion monitoring of CSRZ signal based on clock-frequency component. As a result, we propose a couple of robust clock-extraction methods to monitor chromatic dispersion in CSRZ signal.

  • In this paper, a robust and more accurate trajectory tracking control method for a mobile robot is proposed using WIPDC(Weighted Integral Parallel Distributed Compensation) and T-S Fuzzy disturbance observer. WIPDC reduces the steady state error by adding weighted integral term to PDC. And, T-S Fuzzy disturbance observer makes it possible to estimate and cancel disturbances for a T-S fuzzy model system. As a result, the trajectory tracking controller based on T-S Fuzzy disturbance observer shows robust tracking performance. When the initial postures of a mobile robot and the reference trajectory are different, the initial control inputs to the mobile robot become too large to apply them practically. In this study, also, the problem is solved by designing an initial approach path using a path planning method which employs $B\acute{e}zier$ curve with acceleration limits. Performances of the proposed method are proved from the simulation results.

  • Generally, binary pattern transforms have been used in the field of the face recognition and facial expression, since they are robust to illumination. Thus, this paper proposes an illumination-robust face recognition system combining an MLDP, which improves the texture component of the LDP, and a 2D-PCA algorithm. Unlike that binary pattern transforms such as LBP and LDP were used to extract histogram features, the proposed method directly uses the MLDP image for feature extraction by 2D-PCA. The performance evaluation of proposed method was carried out using various algorithms such as PCA, 2D-PCA and Gabor wavelets-based LBP on Yale B and CMU-PIE databases which were constructed under varying lighting condition. From the experimental results, we confirmed that the proposed method showed the best recognition accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose a low-complexity robust maximum likelihood (ML) receiver for generalized spatial modulation. The proposed receiver performs the transmit antenna partition to lower the computational loads. After we divide the transmit antenna combinations into two parts, one of which is "the likely TAC part," and the other of which is "the unlikely TAC part", based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) filtering output. We first perform the maximum likelihood detection only in the likely TAC part. Then we evaluate the reliability of the solution found in the first search, and based its reliability we decide whether we continue the search in the unlikely TAC part. This partitioned search strategy maintains the performance of the conventional robust maximum likelihood receiver and simultaneously lowers computational loads. Through simulation, we found that our newly-proposed receiver achieves considerable gains over the conventional robust ML detector in terms of the computational loads while providing almost the same performance.
