The Thermal Prestressing Method for continuous composite girder bridges is a new design and construction method developed to induce initial composite stresses in the concrete slab at negative bending regions. Due to the induced initial stresses, prevention of tensile cracks at the concrete slab, reduction of steel girder section, and reduction of reinforcing bars are possible. Thus, the construction efficiency can be improved and the construction can be made more economical. The method for determining the optimum heating region of the thermal prestressing method has not been established although such method is essential for improving the efficiency of the design process. The trial-and-error method used in previous studies is far from efficient, and a more rational method for computing optimal heating region is required. In this study, an efficient method for determining the optimum heating region in using the thermal prestressing method was developed based on the neural network algorithm, which is widely adopted to pattern recognition, optimization, diagnosis, and estimation problems in various fields. Back-propagation algorithm, commonly used as a learning algorithm in neural network problems, was used for the training of the neural network. Through case studies of two-span and three-span continuous composite girder bridges using the developed procedure, the optimal heating regions were obtained.

A double split tee connection, which is a beam-column moment connection, shows different behavioral characteristics under the influences of the thickness of a T-stub flange, a high-strength bolt gauge distance, and the number and diameter of a high-strength bolt. A double split tee connection is idealized and designed that a flexural moment normally acting on connections can be resisted by a T-stub and a shear force by a shear tap. However, where a double split tee connection is adopted to a low-and medium-rise steel structure, a small-sized beam member can be adopted. Then, a shear tab may not be bolted to the web of a beam. This study was conducted to suggest the details of a connection to secure that a double split tee connection with a geometric shape has a sufficient capacity to resist a shear force. To verify this, this study was conducted to make a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis on a double split tee connection.

As a special infrastructure, it is important that the suspension bridges which were designed by using the cable are carefully maintained and safely inspected after their construction, more than what is done in other cases of bridge structures. However, the structural analysis for their design and maintenance has considered only the simplified geometric shape of the structure. Particularly, it is not easy to make the modeling analyze the bridge structure including detailed steel deck plates. In this paper, we evaluated the structural behaviors and performances of the completed earth-anchored suspension bridge that was in a completed state through both the tension of hanger member and their computational analysis. We considered the frame system and the detailed steel deck plates that were especially added into the modeling to take more precision analysis about it. We also applied hanger tensions converted by the natural frequency and the natural frequency of the bridge when in normal vibration. Results of the vehicle loading test were used in the analysis. We compared the results by using our modeling with the result of the loading test and the hanger tension. Our prediction on the behavior of the structure emulates the behavior of the real structure. In applying the data measured by the typhoon "Maemi" which arrived in-land last year, we confirmed our analysis model for the possibility of applying effectively into the preliminary design and maintenance plan.

Many residential buildings and mixed-use (i.e., residential and commercial) buildings that are currently under construction in the country mainly consist of building clusters rather than single structures. Recent trends show single buildings that actually consist of two houses. The lower part of the building consists of a single dwelling space. However, the upper part of the building is split into two dwellings, considering the aspects of commercialism and appearance, such as ventilation and lighting. These tall and complex buildings not only have low mass and damping. They also depend on wind loads for their structural stability and serviceability, due to the interaction between the building groups and the wind. In architectural design, however, the interaction effects among neighboring houses within a building group have yet to be identified. In addition, it is difficult to predict these interaction effects. In this regard, this thesis aims to model patterns of architecture, which consist of two houses that are existing or under construction. Current structures are investigated by comparing their wind-reduced response interaction effects, based on the measured distance between two buildings, and the acceleration response through the wind tunnel test. The results of this study are expected to provide basic data for wind-induced response interaction effects of building groups. Furthermore, the outcomes are also intended to be used as data for more rational and economical structure design.
PSRC column is a concrete encased steel angle column. In the PSRC column, the steel angles placed at the corner of the cross-section resists bending moment and compression load. The lateral re-bars welded to steel angles resist the column shear and the bond between the steel angle and concrete. In the present study, current design procedures in KBC 2009 were applied to the flexure-compression, shear, and bond design of the PSRC composite column. To verify the validity of the design method and failure mode, simply supported 2/3 scaled PSRC and correlated SRC beams were tested under two point loading. The test parameters were the steel angle ratio and lateral bar spacing. The test results showed that the bending, shear, and bond strengths predicted by KBC 2009 correlated well with the test results. The flexural strength of the PSRC specimens was much greater than that of the SRC specimen with the same steel ratio because the steel angles were placed at the corner of the column section. However, when the bond resistance between the steel angle and concrete was not sufficient, brittle failures such as bond failure of the angle, spalling of cover concrete, and the tensile fracture of lateral re-bar occurred before the development of the yield strength of PSRC composite section. Further, if the weldability and toughness of the steel angle were insufficient, the specimen was failed by the fracture of the steel angle at the weld joint between the angle and lateral bars.

The cases of collapse of greenhouses in rural areas have been increasing due to the unexpected heavy snow load. Studies on how to prevent the collapse of greenhouses are rare, however, and the damages are repeated annually. This studysuggests two reinforcing methods: the use of ahigh-strength tapered module, and the addition of a pre-tension tie. The high-strength tapered section is installed where the bending moment is maximum. The design of a plastic greenhouse is controlled by its strength rather than its deflection. The shape of a greenhouse resembles that of an arch system, but its actual structural behavior is the frame behavior, because it is non-continually composed of a curved element (a beam) and vertical elements (columns). This system is too weak and slender to resist a vertical load, because an external load is resisted by the moment rather than by axial force. In this study, a new method, the installation of a temporary tie at the junction of the arch and the column only during snow accumulation, is proposed. The tie changes the action of the greenhouse frame to an arch action. The arch action is more effective when the pre-tension force is applied in the tie, which results in a very strong temporary structural system during snowfall. As a result of using this high-strength tapered section, the combined strength ratio of what? decreased from 10% to 30%. In the case of the additional reinforcement with a tie, it was reduced by half.
Patterning with a geodesic line is essential for economical or efficient usage of membrane materialsin fabric tension membrane structural engineering and analysis. The numerical algorithm to determine the geodesic line for membrane structures is generally classified into two. The first algorithm finds a non-linear shape using a fictitious geodesic element with an initial pre-stress, and the other algorithm is the geodesic line cutting or searching algorithm for arbitrarily curved 3D surface shapes. These two algorithms are still being used only for the three-node plane stress membrane element, and not for the four-node element. The lack of a numerical algorithm for geodesic lines with four-node membrane elements is the main reason for the infrequent use of the four-node membrane element in membrane structural engineering and design. In this paper, a modified numerical algorithm is proposed for the generation of a geodesic line that can be applied to three- or four-node elements at the same time. The explicit non-linear static Dynamic Relaxation Method (DRM) was applied to the non-linear geodesic shape-finding analysis by introducing the fictitiously tensioned 'strings' along the desired seams with the three- or four-node membrane element. The proposed algorithm was used for the numerical example for the non-linear geodesic shape-finding and patterning analysis to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency, and thus, the potential, of the algorithm. The proposed geodesic shape-finding algorithm may improve the applicability of the four-node membrane element for membrane structural engineering and design analysis simultaneously in terms of the shape-finding analysis, the stress analysis, and the patterning analysis.

In this study, an innovative steel stair system is presented which enables rapid erection and high quality control in both residential and office building construction. This system features two lightweight steel stringers of box shape, bolted connections easy to absorb construction tolerance, and stair steps movable transversely (or sliding steps) such that the work space needed for concrete stairway wall could be easily provided. In this type of stairway system, other than providing robust connecting details, ensuring vibration performance is especially important since this system may be vibration-sensitive due to lightweight nature and/or probable low damping. To tackle these issues, a series of full-scale mock-up tests were conducted by using box-shape stringer members with or without concrete-fill. The connection system was shown to be sufficiently stiff and strong, or it remained elastic even under the 160% of service load level. Among the seven stringer alternatives, five exhibited satisfactory vibration performance according to the related North American and European acceptance criteria.
When floor vibration problems occur in existing buildings, TMD (tuned mass damper) can be a viable alternative to resolving the problem. Only when TMD has been exactly tuned to the natural frequency of the floor, it can control the vibration as intended in design. However, TMD gets inefficient in the situation where the natural frequency changes as a result of the uncontrollable variation of the floor mass weight. This physical phenomenon is often called as TMD-off-tuning. This study proposes asymmetric TMD for enhancing the robustness of floor vibration control against uncertain natural frequencies. The proposed TMD features two asymmetric linear springs such that the floor vibrational energy can be dissipated through both the translational and rotational motion. An easy-to-use graphical optimization method was developed in this study. The asymmetric TMD proposed outperformed in vibration control by 28% compared to that of conventional TMD. The robustness of asymmetric TMD of this study was two times higher than that of conventional TMD.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of the frame which is assumed to be used with Welded Unreinforced Flange-Bolted web (WUF-B) connections and detailed in compliance with FEMA 350 recommended seismic design criteria. In FEMA 350, these types of connections are only valid for Ordinary Moment-Resisting Steel Frames (OMRSFs). For this purpose, based on test results, we proposed an analytical model for the Post-Northridge WUF-B connections with different panel zone strength ratios. Using the connection model, SAC Phase II three and nine-story frames were modeled and analyzed. From a nonlinear static pushover analysis, ductility, maximum strength, and the maximum interstory drift ratio were investigated for buildings with Post-Northridge details. Moreover, the maximum interstory drift ratio of each performance level (IO and CP) was also investigated through Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA). Analytical results were compared with those of buildings with either Pre-Northridge connection or ductile connections with no fracture. The analytical results showed that buildings with Post-Northridge WUF-B connections provide superior strength and interstory drift ratio capacity than buildings with Pre-Northridge WUF-B connections.
