  • The stiffness design method is presented as a drift control model of steel structures and applied to design of space trusses subjected to stress and displacement constraints. The stiffness design method is developed by integrating the resizing techniques for an effective drift control algorithm with the strength design process according to the commonly used design specifications such as allowable stress design. In the resizing technique the amount of material to be modified depends on the member displacement participation factors and is determined by an optimization technique. Using the stiffness design method, a structural design model for steel structures is proposed and applied to two verifying examples. As demonstrated in the examples, the displacement of the structures can be effectively controlled without expensive computational cost.

  • In this paper, an experimental study have been many studies on the joints of steel structure, for it has great influences on the safety of structures. Research on block shear rupture of the joint receiving pure tension have been done in foreign countries, but not in Korea. This study focuses on the propriety of block shear design code, according to limited state design criteria of steel structures recently established in Korea, by an experiment on the joint of angle tension members. The methods of this study were to compare other study results on block shear rupture mode and ultimate capacity, and to evaluate the propriety of the criteria design code. The result is that tension yield shear ruptures and shear yield tension ruptures happened at the joint, and the experimental rupture load was 15% higher than the capacity entered in the criteria design code. We conclude that it is necessary to revaluate the block shear design code presented by many studies on the limited state design criteria of steel structures.

  • Seven types of tests were conducted to experimentally evaluate the material properties of ultral-thick (or 120mm-thick) SM490TMC plate. The investigation of through-thickness properties was among the most significant considerations. All chemical and mechanical test results showed the through-thickness homogeneity as required and conformed to the KS(Korean industrial Standards), although the thickness was 1.5 times thicker than the thickness limit (80mm) imposed by Steel Structure Design Code. No reduction in the yield strength of 120mm-thick SM490TMC plate is recommended for design.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the inelastic buckling behavior of the beams under moment gradient using a line-type finite element method. The method is incorporated the non-uniform yielding of the cross-section caused by the presence of residual stress and accepted model of residual stress so called 'simplified' and 'polynomial' pattern is adopted in this study. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling results obtained in this study is compared with the buckling results obtained from the design method based on the allowable stress method given in Korean Steel Designers Manual (KSDM 1995). This study have found that the design method in KSDM (1995) is conservative without and with intermediate bracing applied at the mid span of the beam, and there is some scope for improving the provisions of KSDM (1995)

  • This study investigated the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of simply supported beams under a central concentrated load and a uniformly distributed load. A line-type finite element, method was incorporated with the "so-called" simplified and polynomial patterns of residual stresses. The effect of the load height was also considered in this study. The polynomial residual stresses assumed in this study was a quartic distribution in the flange and a parabolic distribution in the web. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beam was analyzed with four different I-sections manufactured in Korea. Results obtained in this study were compared with KSDM(design method in the 1995 Korean Steel Designers' Manual). The design method in KSDM was found to be generally conservative with and without a sub-beam attached to the main beam, which acted as an intermediate restraint.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the yield stress of SM570TMC concrete-filed H-shape steel columns subjected to axial force. These columns were evaluated and compared using quasi-static tests. The displacements and the axial loads column specimens were measured during the tests, and test results showed that the yield stress of concrete-filed H-shape steel columns subjected to axial load could be predicted using the previously proposed yield stress of steel columns.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate tensile load transmission capacity of H-shaped beam about design load by stud connector. The basic test of stud connecter was conducted and two specimens of full-scale size were tested under monotonic tensile loading condition. The parameter of tests is the size of the H-shaped beams. The results show that tensile load transmission capacity of H-shape beam about design load by stud connectors is excellent observing to the design code of steel structures of Architectural Institute of Korea.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate in-plane and out-of-plane moment transmission capacity of H-shaped beams about design load by stud connector. Four specimens were tested under monotonic moment loading condition in each case to evaluate those. The parameter of tests is the size of the H-shaped beams. The results show that moment transmission capacity of H-shape beams in the serviceability limit state by stud connectors is excellent observing to the design code of steel structures of Architectural Institute of Korea.

  • Recently, pre-engineering building (P.E.B.) systematic frames are increasingly being used in steel factory buildings, but almost of the related techniques are dependent on the engineering program (e.g, MBS, LTI), which is usually imported from other countries. These are designed under the AISC-ASD because at present there is no Korean design code for P.E.B. frames. Also, there are few studies onbehaviour and we need to develop the element techniques by using H-shaped components. In particular, there is a tendency towards overestimated design because column-rafter connections have been designed with extended end plate type joint, which is treated asrigid joint,so structural examinations are needed. Therefore, this study represents a basic step in ascertaining the application of P.E.B. systematic frames by using H-shaped column-rafter connectionwith flush type end plate. Its structural performance is compared with that of existing extended type joint using a structural performance test. The structural behaviour of specimen was understood qualitatively and the possibility of application (e.g, design aid charts) of semi-connection (flush type) with H-shaped column-rafter was determined.

  • This study is aimed at developing the structural design interface module for the brace connections in order to improve the efficiency of the interoperability between structural design and BIM modeling at the construction design phase of steel structures. For this purpose, structural design module is first established according to the algorithm built by structural design standards of domestic and foreign. Then, it is developed interface module which can export the data of 3D model obtained from the BIM design tools to structural design module and feed structural design results back to 3D BIM model. Finally, the efficiency and practicality of the developed interface module is verified by applying to a sample model.
