A Study on the Fascination of Animation (애니메이션의 매혹성에 대한 고찰)

  • Animation fascinates people. Fascination can be defined as a state in which one's attention is irresistibly taken and remains that way even though he/she gains nothing from the object. The power of fascination of animation comes from the fact that the illusion in animation looks as convincing as the reality. In order to successfully fascinate spectators, animation should attract their eyes with visual sensation (confusion), and then quickly have them immersed into the narrative, the inner logic that rationalizes the confusion while the attraction lasts. Animation fascinates us with both visual sensation and narrative, and this fascination is the reason why we keep making animation in spite of the extra efforts it requires. Our fascination to animation is a eulogy to the fantasy so convincing that makes our perception discords with our reason.

  • 2003년 11월에 개봉된 영화<올드보이>는, 으로 유명해진 박찬욱 감독의 복수극 3부작의 제2편으로 알려진 작품이다. 3부작의 첫 편인 <복수는 나의 것>의 연장선상에서 이 영화를 예견했던 평론가들과 관객들은 전작이 가지지 못했던 상업성까지 겸비한 이 영화의 독특한 스타일과장르, 그리고 신선한 소재에 감탄하고 열광했다.영화<올드보이>는 기본적으로 상업적으로 ‘잘만들어진(well-made)’ 영화이다. 말하고자 하는 것도 명징(明澄)해 관객들을 혼란스럽거나 지루하지 않게 만들며, ‘멜로’적요소와‘느와르’적요소, 거기에‘미스테리’요소까지 들어 있어 관객들의 시선을 쉴틈없이 붙잡아 둔다. 화려한 색감과 음울하면서도 압도적인 오리지널 사운드 트랙의 선율, 신선한 촬영기법(특히, 영화 속 최민식의 3분동안의 롱테이크‘장도리 액션’장면은 이 영화의 압권이다), 그리고중간 중간 보이는 블랙 코미디의 요소까지. 물론 이 영화를‘잘만들어지게’만든데에는 최민식이라는 배우의 뛰어난 연기력과 그외의 배우들의 호연도 큰몫을 했다. 그래서 관객들은 이 영화가 숨겨둔 ‘비밀’의 섬뜩함과 불편함에도 불구하고 이영화를 ‘재미있게’ 보러 왔다. 그 덕분에 <올드보이>는 흥행면에서 꽤 큰 성공을 거두어 300만명 이상의 관객을 동원했다. 그리고 2004년 5월 화제를 뿌리며 칸느 영화제에서 심사위원대상이라는 쾌거를 거둔다. 뿐만 아니라 2003년 청룡영화상, 2004년 대한민국영화대상 등 국내영화제에서도<올드보이>의 활약은 대단했다. 2003년흥행과 작품성 모두에서 인정을 받은<살인의추억>의 자리를 이 영화가 물려 받고 있다고 할만하다. 한마디로 말해, 우리가 늘 주목하는‘잘된콘텐츠’의 전형적인 예인 것이다. 바로 그 지점 때문에 우리는 이 영화에 대해 이야기할 필요가 생긴다.

  • This study has been carried out as a basic course for the analysis of foundation deformations based on the Cap model using the finite element methods. Material parameters should firstly be determined in order to use the Cap model for numerical solution. Associated with the fact described above, a method determining the soil parameters is suggested using algorithm for numerical ana])isis from raw truly triaxial compression laboratory test data of Pueblo.Colorado sand by Zaman, et at. (1982) More specifically, the change of soil parameters Is thoroughly examined by weighting the data obtained from CTC and RTE tests, respectively. The main results obtained are as follows; 1. The obtained values of parameters (E, V and 2) are same irrespective of data obtained from various kind of tests. 2. The values of the other parameters are dependent on data used. 3. The determination of parameters is little affected by the weighting factor.

Sentence Type Identification in Korean Applications to Korean-Sign Language Translation and Korean Speech Synthesis (한국어 문장 유형의 자동 분류 한국어-수화 변환 및 한국어 음성 합성에의 응용)

  • This paper proposes a method of automatically identifying sentence types in Korean and improving naturalness in sign language generation and speech synthesis using the identified sentence type information. In Korean, sentences are usually categorized into five types: declarative, imperative, propositive, interrogative, and exclamatory. However, it is also known that these types are quite ambiguous to identify in dialogues. In this paper, we present additional morphological and syntactic clues for the sentence type and propose a rule-based procedure for identifying the sentence type using these clues. The experimental results show that our method gives a reasonable performance. We also describe how the sentence type is used to generate non-manual signals in Korean-Korean sign language translation and appropriate intonation in Korean speech synthesis. Since the method of using sentence type information in speech synthesis and sign language generation is not much studied previously, it is anticipated that our method will contribute to research on generating more natural speech and sign language expressions.

  • This study is prepared to understand the filial story's communicative meaning from the aspects of Character's behavior. The filial story have typically didactic theme and it is not have enough room for another interpretations. But if we carefully analyze the filial story from the point of view of (1)the target of the filial duty[father/ mother]. (2) the actor of the filial duty[son/ daughter]. (3) the evaluator of the filial duty[witness/ recorder], we can understand the filial story's connotation. In "三國遺事"(Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) and "三國史記"(Historical Records of the Three Kingdoms), the target of the filial duty plays an important part and communicates with the actor of the filial duty but there's no more communication in "高麗史"(History of Corea). As the character's communication is lessened, the meaning of edification is emphasized.

The Interpretation of Sosoewon from the Perspective of Reception Aesthetics (소쇄원의 수용미학적 해석)

  • This study interpreted a traditional garden of Korea through reception aesthetics. The 'gap' of acceptable aesthetics is found in the 'distance that occurs between writers and readers'. This study aims to interpret this gap between what the writer intends and what the reader expects. Boundaries do not limit traditional spaces in Korea and, therefore, are not limited by characteristics. These characteristics were studied from the perspectives of the author, the work, and the reader. The aspect first looked at the life and ideas of the gardener, the second analyzed the form and structure of the garden, and the last examined writings, from the past and present, of those who appreciated the garden. From the author's perspective, Sosoewon was understood as a garden that embodied the philosophy of Yang Sanbo. Second, the duality and indeterminateness were recognized as two characteristics of this work; artifacts in the garden were arranged in a natural form, and the gardens have indefinite boundaries, so they can be freely expanded and reduced. Finally, from the reader's perspective, it was noted that the beauty of this garden is enhanced through poetry, painting, and writing. Thus, historic gardens of Korea can be open spaces where the meaning of the garden is enriched through the free participation of viewers based on their own ideas.

Affective Representation of Behavioral and Physiological Responses to Emotional Videos using Wearable Devices (웨어러블 기구를 이용한 영상 자극에 대한 행동 및 생리적 정서 표상)

  • This study examined affective representation by analyzing physiological responses measured using wearable devices and affective ratings in response to emotional videos. To achieve this aim, a published dataset was reanalyzed using multidimensional scaling to demonstrate affective representation in two dimensions. Cross-participant classification was also conducted to identify the consistency of emotional responses across participants. The accuracy and misclassification in each emotional condition were described by exploring the confusion matrix derived from the classification analysis. Multidimensional scaling revealed that the represented objects, namely, emotional videos, were positioned along the rated valence and arousal vectors, supporting the core affect theory (Russell, 1980). Vector fittings of physiological responses also showed the associations between heart rate acceleration and low arousal, increased heart rate variability and negative and high arousal, and increased electrodermal activity and negative and low arousal. Using the data of behavioral and physiological responses across participants, the classification results revealed that emotional videos were more accurately classified than the chance level of classification. The confusion matrix showed that awe, enthusiasm, and liking, which were categorized as positive, low arousal emotions in this study, were less accurately classified than the other emotions and were misclassified for each other. Through multivariate analyses, this study confirms the core affect theory using physiological responses measured through wearable devices and affective ratings in response to emotional videos.

A study of the classic Sijo(時調) concerning the productive life (생활 표현의 고시조 연구)

  • The main industry of the Chosun dynasty was farming, which was related to the people's lives in every respect. By the end of the Chosun dynasty commerce was a new industry becoming increasingly more beneficial. I study how these two industries were being expressed in the classic Sijo. The classic Sijo is a main literary genre created by the upper-class. Even though industry was very important for sustaining the Chosun dynasty, Confucian scholars and government officials(members of the upper class) didn't actually work in the industries of farming and commerce. But sometimes they returned to their rural hometowns, because they owed large amounts of land which they let the servants farm for themselves. As the main composers of Sijo were these Confucian scholars and government officials, I study a collection of their Sijo which expresses the life of industry. In order to achieve this goal, I analyze several sides of the classic Sijo : for example, its writers(along with their personalities) throughout different periods: the point of view of persona; and the specific life of industry and the way it is expressed in the Sijo. First, I look at the writers of the different periods and their personalities. During the fourteenth century to the seventeenth century, the main writers of Sijo on the life of farming were Confucian scholars and government officials. During the eighteenth century to the nineteenth century, the main writers of Sijo on the life of farming were Confucian scholars, government officials, and also commoner singers-the unnamed writers. Second, I look at the point of view of persona. During the fourteenth century to the seventeenth century, the personas were the country man(one's lord and master) and the farmer, who was of two kinds of people : i.e., those trying to work together and those really working together. During the eighteenth century to the nineteenth century, the personas were the country man, who was satisfied with his rural life as overseer to farming, and two kinds of farmers : those who farmed very hard by themselves, or those who criticized the failed tax system. Third, I discuss the specific life of industry and the way it is expressed in the Sijo. During the fourteenth century to the seventeenth century, the writers of Sijo expressed, in a general way together in one Sijo, different kinds of work for example, plowing a dry field and a rice field, picking wild vegetables, and cutting rice and weed. During the eighteenth century to the nineteenth century, the writer of Sijo expressed different kinds of work in a more specific way, each in its own Sijo : for example, buying and selling, bringing land under cultivation for farming. weaving, digging for water, and heavy taxation. I look at three aspects of Sijo concerning industry, but there still remain several aspects of Sijo to study, such as those concerning worship of the king, and those concerning high officials, the common people, and the being of things.

A Study on stylistic features between the manuscript edition and the woodblock ediction of 『Cheonuisogameonhae』 (『천의소감언해(闡義昭鑑諺解)』 목판본과 필사본 간의 문체론적 특징 고찰)

  • This paper examines the differences of two different versions of "Cheonuisogameonhae" in terms of stylistics and investigates factors affecting the differences. The interpretations between the woodblock edition and the manuscript edition might be different depending on assumed range of readership, and the stylistic differences between two editions might be different depending on the possibility of extension of the reading population. Thus, this paper examines how stylistic effects are reflected in inter-relations between a translator as a speaker and readers as listeners according to speaker intentions. In Chapter 2, the stylistic differences reflected from two difference editions are examined in terms of the expression of a writer's respect, emotions, and formal consciousness to readers. The expressions of a writer's respect are more clearly emerged in the manuscript edition than in the woodblock edition. The honorific expression of a subject, '-gyeo?dsyeo', and the honorific expression of a writer, '-s?p-', are more frequently used in the manuscript edition than in the woodblock edition. In order to express positive emotions, exclamation endings are used in the manuscript edition, which shows the writer's strong emotional sympathy with readers' words and behaviors. On the other hand, in the woodblock edition, '-이' is used after names in order to treat rebellious subjects and people involved in conspiracy contemptuously by the use of informal forms. In addition, affirmative sentences in the manuscript edition and double negative sentences in the woodblock edition are used respectively, which intends to strongly emphasize a king's will and the appropriateness of the will. The writer's formal consciousness to readers are found in the way of writing names of people and places in Korean. Chinese characters are generally used two show formal consciousness; thus, names of people and places are expressed in Chinese characters in the woodblock edition. In Chapter 3, factors that made the stylistic differences between two editions are examined. The factors causing stylistic differences are examined in terms of the purpose of the interpretation, the class and range of the reading population, a writer's attitudes toward readers, and the face-to-fact situation of a writer and readers.
