  • The purpose of this research is to identify the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between family social capital and self-esteem of adolescents. Five waves of panel data from the Korea Youth Panel Survey were employed for this research. Korean Adolescents Policy Research Institute collected the first wave data in 2004 from elementary school children in 4th grade. Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling was performed to analysis the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between family social capital and self-esteem. The major findings were as follows. First, stability coefficient of family social capital and self-esteem showed that both variables were significantly stable over time. Secondly family social capital(t) had statistically significant effect on self-esteem(t+1), whereas self-esteem did not predict family social capital at a statistically significant level. These findings suggest that family social capital and self-esteem is stable overtime, and that obtaining family social capital and establishing positive self-esteem is important during this period in childhood. In addition, the results show that family social capital affects self-esteem, which highlights the importance of family social capital accumulation on the development of adolescent self-esteem.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether children's social capital(both within and outside the family) and happiness would vary depending on poverty, as well as the effects of poverty on the happiness of children through their social capital. The 2013 Korea Youth General Survey data were utilized. We analyzed data from 766 children between the ages of 9 and 12, as well as their parents. Data were examined using structural equation modeling analysis. The bootstrapping method was used to test the mediating effects of social capital. The results showed that poor children had lower levels of social capital(both within and outside the family) and happiness than non-poor children. Second, poverty had indirect effects one happiness. In particular, poverty affected children's happiness through their social capital obtained both from within and outside the families. The mediating effects were statistically significant. Based on the results, we suggested policy and practice implications, including various interventions for children in poverty that may improve their social capital, which influences children's happiness.

  • This study investigated the mechanism and the degree of the effects of social capital on children's depression by using the Korean National Child and Adolescent Panel data Yr. 1. We predicted that the human capital of a child's family such as education and income would influence children's depression directly, and indirectly through family and community social capital. We further predicted that the influence of the community social capital would be exerted on the depressive symptoms more so through the family social capital. The findings suggest that both the human capital and the community social capital influence children's depression through family social capital more so than directly. The findings underscore the importance of the qualities of family relationship for a child's mental health and suggested family policies and intervention strategies that strengthen families.

  • This study explores how married migrant women in Korea create social capital in their everyday lives, and how their social capital influences cultural acculturation. This study performs a structural equation model, using two-year data of female migrant women. The results suggest that network elements, including official supports from public organizations and unofficial supports from personal ties, contribute to creation of perceptual elements, including social trust, community involvement and relations. Also, these two elements of social capital have positive impact on acculturation of married migrant women in Korea. The longitudinal analysis provides a basic understanding of the creation of social capital and the relationship between social capital and acculturation of married migrant women and also clearly suggests the importance of public supports rather than personal supports from family or friends.

  • This study investigated the descriptive statistics and correlation among self-identity, school violence experience, and family social capital of adolescents and examined influence of school violence experience on self-identity and moderating effect of family social capital on the relationship between school violence experience and self-identity. Data used for analysis was from 7th grade students in The Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey in 2012. Analyses were performed using the IBM SPSS program for demographic analysis, pearson correlation, and stepwise regression analyses. Results of the study were as follows: First, the average was slightly higher for self-identity, parents' affectionate attention, and awareness of their child's friends; the average was lower for misconduct experience and victimization experience; second, there was a weak negative correlation between self-identity and bully victimization; there was a positive correlation between self-identity and family social capital (parents' affectionate attention and awareness of their child's friends). Third, to investigate the effect of school violence experience (bullying and bully victimization) on self-identity, stepwise regression analysis results were as follows: Bullying had a statistically positive influence on self-identity and bully victimization had a statistically negative influence on self-identity; both parents' affectionate attention and awareness of their child's friends had a statistically positive influence on self-identity; fourth, parents' affectionate attention had a statistically negative moderating effect on the self-identity; therefore, it signifies that the relationship between bully victimization and self-identity appears differently depending on the parents' affectionate attention, which means that the parents' affectionate attention had a negative effect on the self-identity of the adolescents who were victimized by school violence.

It also examines whether adolescents' self-esteem mediates the relationships between social capital in families and depression. This study uses 2,306 adolescents drawn from the $3^{rd}-5^{th}$ Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). The results are as follows. First, adolescents with high level of social capital in families are less likely to experience depression. Second, adolescents with high level of social capital are more likely to have high level of self-esteem. Third, adolescents with high level of self-esteem are less likely to experience depression. Lastly, social capital in families has impacts on depression through self-esteem. Thus, it is necessary to increase social capital in families to address adolescents' depression. Developing intimate relationships between parents and adolescents is needed to increase social capital in families. It is also necessary to develop programs and services to enhance self-esteem of adolescents, which will prevent or address adolescents' depression.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the types of social capital by delinquent adolescents using the Q methodology and to find ways to form social capital. As a result, 33 types of statements about social capital were extracted from 16 juvenile delinquents and five types were derived. Type I was named as 'Friend Supportive Type', Type II as 'Family Friendly', Type III as 'Ability Type', Type IV as 'Social Justice' and Type V as 'School Trust Type'. First, it is necessary to develop a program that uses good friends to improve social capital in peer relations. Second, intervention in the direct relationship between parents' children, that is, communication with friends, children of friends and children who are indirectly formed with children, as well as communication, attention, and communication are required. Third, it is necessary to intervene to control the continuous emotional control ability in daily life. Fourth, there is a need to strengthen the irrationality of the social system and the supervision over the harmful environment. Finally, there is a need to improve the environment to enhance the level of school norms and confidence in the school.

  • I describe the complex support systems around the world, focusing on their importance for economic growth and fiscal sustainability. Familial transfers for old age support are somewhat significant in some Asian economies including Korea, although they deteriorate quite rapidly. Public transfer systems are less significant in Korea compared with most OECD member countries. This is important because Korea has had the opportunity to develop sustainable systems less encumbered by obligations made to current and future generations. Relying on accumulated assets rather than transfers helped countries create capital-intensive economies that can maintain standards of living. This is true for Korea, but the question of how the labor and capital market will respond to the rapidly changing social welfare system remains as a critical question.

Methods: The data of the social statistics survey that the Korea National Statistical Office conducted in 2006 were chosen and 37,928 people from them, who were 25~59 years old were sampled. This paper made path analysis to examine the relationships among social capital, socioeconomic factors, and health-related lifestyle and the influence of these factors on self-rated health. Results: In relation to the overall influences of socioeconomic factors, social capital, and health-related lifestyle on self-rated health, the following factors had a significant positive direct effect: education(0.069), subjective class(0.108), marriage(0.054), satisfaction with family relationships(0.087), reliability of institutions(0.020), citizens' participation(0.021), exercise(0.037), and refrain from smoking(0.011). However, abstinence from alcohol(-0.067) had a negative direct effect on self-rated health Conclusion: Based on the results, this paper can suggest that the plan of keeping and building up social capital should be considered in the whole aspects of the society and the project promoting drinking moderation is required to consider social culture than individuals.
