  • The objective of this study was to examine the early growth of haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus larvae from a series of reared specimens for provide information to developmental biology and more information on the aspect of aquaculture in the larvae of this species. Larvae were reared in the laboratory and sampled periodically for developmental study until 67 days after hatching. An increase in total length of fish indicated continuous growth, described by the growth expression of the type $TL=3.5374e^{0.0536X}(r^2=0.8759$, where TL is total length and X is at days after hatching) and $BW=0.0002e^{0.1858X}(r^2=0.8671$, where BW is body weight and X is at days after hatching), respectively. Pattern of body depth and pectoral fin length are instantaneous growth which expression of the type $BD=0.3545e^{0.0778X},\;r^2=0.9563$(where BD is body depth and X is at days after hatching) for body depth growth and the type $PL=0.0111e^{0.1591X},\;r^2=0.9194$(where PL is pectoral fin length and X is at days after hatching) for pectoral fin length growth. The relationship of body depth and total length expressed as $BD=0.2397X-0.5735(r^2=0.9957$, where BD is body depth and X is total length), and pectoral fin length and total length is $PL=0.1929X-1.3767(r^2=0.9882$, where PL is pectoral fin length and X is total length) pectoral fin length against body depth simultaneously recorded for juvenile haddock(PL=0.8117BD-0.9718, $r^2=0.9814$, where PL is pectoral fin length and BD is body depth). Relationship of body depth and body weight was expressed the type of $BD=-9.4734X^2+19.046X+1.3672,\;r^2=0.941$(where BD is body depth and X is body weight), and pectoral fin length and body weight expressed the type of $PL=6.379X^2+14.023X+0.3774,\;r^2=0.9494$(where PL is pectoral fin length and X is body weight). From this point view, growth characteristics of juvenile haddock in this experiment may be useful to establish a successful culture technique for rearing larval haddock.

  • For the effective use of salmon processing by-products, the food components of muscle around pectoral fin (MAPF) were investigated and compared with those of salmon fillet muscle (SFM). The proximate composition of MAPF was 64.4% for the moisture, 17.2% for the crude protein, 16.2% for the crude lipid and 1.4% for the ash. The pH, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) content and yield of MAPF were 6.73, 7.8 mg/100 g and 7.4 (g/100 g SFM), respectively. The trichloroacetic acid (TCA) soluble-N content of MAPF was 479 mg/100 g, which was lower than that (612 mg/100 g) of SFM. The Hunter value of MAPF was 54.86 for L value, 22.08 for a value, 22.41 for b value and 52.35 for ${\Delta}$E value, which were similar to those of SFM. The total content in amino acids of MAPF was 17.1 g/100 g, its major amino acids were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, leucine and lysine. The major fatty acids of MAPF were 16:0, 18:1n-9 and 18:2n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3. No differences were found in the major fatty acids and the major amino acids between MAPF and SFM. The calcium and phosphorus contents of MAPF were 19.1 mg/100 g and 211.7 g/100 g, respectively. These results suggested that MAPF could be used as seafood resources.

  • In August, 1988, matured adults of devil stinger were collected from Jinhae Bay and Jaran Bay, Kyongsangnam-do, Korea and kept in the aquarium (1 ton) for spawning. The egg development was observed with the eggs laid in the aquarium of adult fish. The diameters of eggs ranged from 1.2 to 1.3 mm (n=6), and no oil globules were found in the eggs. The hatching took place from 26 to 29 hours after eight cells stage at the water temperature of $24.9-26.5^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were 2.47~3.10 mm in total length with xanthophore on the body and yolk sac. Myomere number was 13+16-17=29-30. Two days after hatching, larvae were 3.61-4.16 mm in total length, and 3 to 4 large spots of melanophore appeared on the large pectoral fin. Three days after hatching, larvae were 3.97-4.29 mm in total length, and the larvae absorved the yolk material completely to become post larvae with 4-5 rays of the pectoral fin. Six days after hatching, larvae attained 4.07-5.46 mm in total length, and 11 rays and 8-9 spots of melanophore were developed on the pectoral fin.

  • On May 12, 2023, a juvenile specimen (37.6 mm in standard length) belonging to the order Aulopiformes was collected from southern Yokjido, Tongyeong, Korea, using a Bongo net. The specimen was identified as the member of the family Scopelarchidae in having a slender body, a large mouth, large tube-like eyes, a long anal fin base, a developed adipose fin and no photophores on body. Finally, we identify the specimen as Scopelarchoides danae Johnson, 1974 in having 8 dorsal fin rays, 20 pectoral fin rays, 9 pelvic fin rays, 26 anal fin rays, dorsal fin located anteriorly than pelvic fin, and two large pigments below the pectoral fin and posterior to the pelvic fin. Scopelarchoides danae is distinguished from Scopelarchoides signifer in having less dorsal fin rays (8 vs. 9~10) and pectoral fin rays (20 vs. 22~25). The species differs from Scopelarchus guentheri and Scopelarchus analis in that it has no stripes along the both upper and lower of lateral line, and from Scopelarchus michaelsarsi in that it has more anal fin rays (26 vs. 18~21). Because this is the first occurrence among Korean fish fauna, we present its detailed morphological traits, and its new Korean name as "Nun-bang-ul-mae-tung-i".
