Effects of Intake and Exhaust Valve Timing on Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Lean-Burn Direct-Injection LPG Engine (직접분사식 희박연소 LPG엔진에서 흡배기 밸브시기가 연소 및 배기특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to meet the enforced emission regulations and reduce fuel consumption, various new technologies are employed in engines. The problem of NOx emissions under a lean mixture condition should be solved, because a lean-burn direct-injection engine can realize stable lean combustion with a stratified mixture, which results in improvements in fuel economy and emissions. This study investigated the effects of intake and exhaust valve timing changes on the performance and emission characteristics of a lean-burn LPG direct-injection engine. Under a partial-load operating condition without throttling, an increase in the intake valve opening led to an increase in NOx emissions due to an increase in the amount of excess air. The fuel consumption deteriorated with an increase in the exhaust valve opening due to a decrease in the expansion work and an increase in the pumping loss.

  • More accurate vehicle trajectory data are now readily available through Differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS). A variety of research opportunities emerge with utilization of such high resolution traffic data. A novel approach of this study is to explore drivers' responsive behavior to variable message signs (VMS) by using individual vehicle trajectories extracted from in-vehicle DGPS data. Responsive characteristics of drivers traveling on urban freeways, which can be represented by speeds and acceleration rates, under the provision of real-time traffic information through VMS are statistically investigated. In addition to conducting an ANOVA test, probability density functions of acceleration rates were estimated. The findings of this study can be used to understand the impact of drivers' workload when providing VMS messages on traffic flow patterns. Furthermore, results can be important fundamentals to assist in conducting more realistic traffic simulations.

  • This paper describes a countermeasure of electric utilities and customer equipment in order to minimize an effect of sensitive electrical and electronic equipment on the voltage disturbances. After being studied, some schemes to solve were discovered. Firstly, in the electric utilities, the reduction of frequency and influence of voltage drop's time are not easy to realize because of the standpoint of effect and economy. Secondly, in the customer equipment, there are some equipment to minimize the voltage disturbances, Such as an UPSs, a noise suppressors and a power conditioners. One of them should be established on the computer control and automated systems, the electromagnetic switch of delay-release type should be adopted on the electromagnetic switch, the controlling circuit should be adopted on the variable speed motors which is being considered a countermeasure for a momentary under-voltage drops, the luminaire adhering a instantaneous restrike device should be adopted on the HID lamp. And also, the scheme of extending a setting time of relay on the undervoltage relay and the forming method of sequence which is automatic reclosing at this time of instantaneous suspension of an electric supply have been studied.

  • This paper investigates a new sensorless control appling a virtual flux oriented vector control without the line voltage sensor for the power factor correction of 3 phase PWM converter. The DC output voltage is controlled by applying the kalman filter algorithm for the virtual flux estimation and the synchronous phase is obtained by using the estimated virtual flux equation based on kalman filter. This method is used to reduce the calculation time of the system and obtain a stable control that the input current including the harmonics and the noise is improved. The proposed system implement PFC algorithm in the variable region of DC output voltage. It can obtain the unity power factor, and can precisely control the DC output voltage in the load variation and in the variable voltage range. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified through simulation and experiment.

  • In this paper, a high-reliability differential paired 24-bit eFuse OTP memory with program-verify-read mode for PMICs is designed. In the proposed program-verify-read mode, the eFuse OTP memory can do a sensing margin test with a variable pull-up load in consideration of programmed eFuse resistance variation and can output a comparison result through a PFb (pass fail bar) pin by comparing a programmed datum with its read one. It is verified by simulation results that the sensing resistance is lower with $4k{\Omega}$ in case of the designed differential paired eFuse OTP memory than $50k{\Omega}$ in case of its dual-port eFuse OTP memory.

  • This paper develops a framework for efficient resource management within the grid service environment. Resource management is the core element of the grid service; therefore, GridRMF(Grid Resource Management Framework) is modeled and developed in order to respond to such variable characteristics of resources as accordingly as possible. GridRMF uses the participation level of grid resource as a basis of its hierarchical management. This hierarchical management divides managing domains into two parts: VMS(Virtual Organization Management System) for virtual organization management and RMS(Resource Management System) for metadata management. VMS mediates resources according to optimal virtual organization selection mechanism, and responds to malfunctions of the virtual organization by LRM(Local Resource Manager) automatic recovery mechanism. RMS, on the other hand, responds to load balance and fault by applying resource status monitoring information into adaptive performance-based task allocation algorithm.

  • In this study, I presented power control unit with potential use in the magnetic stimulation of biological systems. The effect of the magnetic stimulation depends on the geometry and orientation of the induced electric field as well as on the current pulse waveform delivered by the stimulator coil. TMS is achieved from the outside of the head using pulses of electromagnetic field that induce an electric field in the brain. There are numerous possibities in the applications TMS, such as diagnosis and therapy through the brain stimulation. These factors are very important to define the equipment requirements and characteristics in that the topology of the power supply and the size and geometry of the coil. The proposed solution is the generation of current pulses with variable amplitude and duration, according to a user defined input. Another solution is the topology that uses elements to store and transfer energy from the power source to the load. In addition to proposed topology, an adequate control strategy and right set of the power circuit parameters made possible to obtain unipolar waves and bipolar waves.

  • An improved MPPT converter with current compensation method for small-scaled PV-applications is presented in this paper. The proposed method implements maximum power point tracking (MPPT) by variable reference current which is continuously changed during one sampling period. Therefore, the Power transferred to the load is increased above 9% by the proposed MPPT converter with current compensation method. As a result, the utilization efficiency of Photovoltaic (PV)-panel can be increased. In addition, as it doesn't use digital signal processor (DSP), this MPPT method has the merits of both a cost efficiency and a simple control circuit design. Therefore, it is considered that the proposed MPPT method is proper to low power, low cost PV-applications. The concept and control principles of the proposed Un moth()d are explained in detail and its validity of the proposed method is verified through several simulated results.

  • A system simulation program was developed for a multi-type inverter heat pump. Electronic expansion valve(EEV) was used to extend the capacity modulating range of the heat pump as expansion device. The program was also developed to calculate actual system performance with the building load variation with climate during a year. The performance variation of a multi-type hat pump with two EEV and an inverter compressor was simulated with compressor speed, capacity, and flow area of the EEV. As a result, the optimum operating frequency of the compressor and openings of the expansion device were decided at a given load. As compressor speed increased, he capacity of heat pump increased, the capacity of heat pump increased. Therefore flow area of EEV should be adjusted to have wide openness. Thus the coefficient of performance(COP) of the heat pump decreased due to increasement of compressor power input. The maximum COP point at a given load was decided according to the compressor speed. And under the given specific compressor speed and the load, the optimum openings point of EEV was also decided. Although the total load of indoor units was constant, the operating frequency increased as the fraction of load in a room increased. Finally ad the compressor power input increased, the coefficient of performance decreased.

  • Network of these days, A transmission medium of information is replaced from electric signal to optical signal to accept various and increased network traffic. In this paper, we develop simulation program using AweSim and simulate EPON system as a high-speed optical subscriber network with various conditions. The effects of number of ONUs, effects of network load and effects of slot assignment schemes have been evaluated. The simulation results show that slot assignment schemes and number of ONUs is major factor of network performance. The variable-number slot scheme is more efficient than fixed-length slot scheme in the traffic processing.
