  • The purpose of the thesis is to answer the question on how the visual image content, being the original content, should be adapted to and represented as a spatial content. The thesis focuses on adaptation as the key in the conversion process of visual image content to a themed space. There are many published studies dealing with storytelling, adaptation from books to movies and TV shows, or from movies to games and vice versa. On the contrary, when it comes to adaptation from visual image content to spatial content, noticeably few studies were done on the method, and fewer studies view adaptation as the prior step of storytelling. This study first defines adaptation, and then applies the methods of Gianetty and Dudley which is further incorporated into the conversion of visual image content into a themed space. It then turns the attention to the characteristics of themed spaces. A case study highlights that a themed space is a spatial representation of the story, image and action in the visual image content, and analyze the type of adaptation made. The study results draws two conclusions; adaptation must be carried out prior to the storytelling of the spatial content; and opposed to a third-person view of the visual image content, the main factor in a themed space is first-hand experience. Thus, the thesis suggests that conversion from visual image content to themed spaces are not merely imitative but is a full range of recreation of a new content. It is expected that more detailed analyses on the particulars will lead to feasible outcome on implementing various methods of adaptation and bring about effective conversions between the visual image contents and themed spaces.

  • 'Convention' refers to custom and practice as the dictionary definition; it means genre custom. Readers feel intimate with the pattern and grammar that a genre has, and they participate in the work, predicting and expecting the next in the 'truism.' So, all popular arts targeting the public have genre custom-that is, convention. A cartoon (comics) is one of the popular arts whose convention is developed most to the extent that its law comes across our mind just with the genre's name such as 'sports comics', 'detective comics' and 'romance comics.' However, although the fantasy cartoon is a genre that has been loved for a long time, it is one of the cartoon genres that has rarely been studied on its convention. There are several reasons for the lack of studies on convention of the fantasy cartoon. The most fundamental reason may be that its basic concept has not been properly prescribed. There are some precedent studies prescribing the fantasy cartoon as an extension of the fantastic literature, but it is hard to analyze convention that only fantasy cartoon has, because its range is too wide. So, this study considered J.R.R. Tolkein's 'Lord of the Ring' had made the genre custom of fantasy novel and fantasy comics, and classified concept and type of the fantasy cartoon. And through analysis of various cases, it investigated convention of the fantasy cartoon into 6 types. Genre is not the complete format. It is subdivided and differentiated, and it becomes one with other genres and makes a new one. For that reason, there exist limitations always when we study a genre convention of a certain genre. This study confesses in advance that it also has limitations as it just suggests convention of the general fantasy cartoon.

  • Graham Greene's The Quiet American is a war novel set in Vietnam. Thus, although war-related political stories are mainly unfolded, this novel presumes that Westerners are basically superior to the colored Vietnamese. In addition to racial issues, it describes the dual discrimination and inequality that women face. Phung, a Vietnamese woman who wishes to live a rich and comfortable life through marriage to a Western man, is a gender underdog oppressed by the capital and males. She is discriminated against by selfish views created by men, such as being expressed as an ignorant woman who can feel physical pain but not mental pain and being described as a partner to satisfy men's pleasure. Fowler and Pyle, the male lead characters who are gender strong, treat the Asian woman as a low-status person who is qualitatively different from Westerner and use and exploit the woman simply to satisfy their selfish needs. Therefore, it is hard to say that this story involves true love, as it is based on an unequal relationship. Eventually, Pyle's death brings Phung back to Fowler, confirming that Asian women are unable to escape from the gender underdog of Western men.

  • The term 'noble savage' is a literary stock character that expresses the concept of an idealized person who has not been corrupted by civilization, and therefore symbolizes humanity's innate goodness. Fictional noble savage characters that are raised by wild animals such as Rudiard Kipling's Mowgli or Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan were created over 100 years ago but are still repeatedly reproduced as movies and TV series. Since films that depict noble savages tend to criticize civilization, popularity of these film could be due to the hidden anxiety of masses towards civilization and technology. Characters in commercial films about noble savages tend to be leveled, sharpened, and assimilated as Allport and Postman argued in The Psychology of Rumor. It is probably because films, as mass medium, need to be understood easily to the public. Characters in animations with cartoon style images are more likely to be leveled, sharpened, and assimilated even further than live-actions. Films show social stereotype of the time through assimilation process. Comparing different versions of film based on the same novel about noble savage how those social stereotypes such as gender roles and idea of evil change.

Satirical cartoons in modern Chinese comics were popular due to emotional instability and war caused by foreign powers. Among many popular comics, this paper analyzes in the 1920s and in the 1930s which were made into films and dramas. Chapter Two shows that China in the Republican era of China expanded its consumer culture into some sectors like films, novels, magazines and fashion in the 1920s and 1930s. However, more than any other things, this chapter considers from the historical perspective "the golden age" of comics including comic magazine in the 1930s and a history of comic magazines that gained popularity with conventional and common story. Chapter Three explains that social satire cartoons were in vogue since the May Fourth Movement and anti-imperialistic and semi-feudalistic stories in the 1920s were realized in life. It also says that comics that describes the negative sides of its society were popular. • The narratives of the digital age have attempted interactions, and the interactive storytelling represented by the Branch Narratives has a problem of the expensive production cost of many optional implementations and poor narrative compared to linear story. As an alternative to this, this study proposes a user-oriented storytelling using user's personality traits. Using the Enneagram, a model of human psyche, and the Actantial model of the semiotician Greimas, when stories and characters are the same, the story could be reconstructed by deriving different topics from the same story according to the user's Enneagram personality type. The theme is determined by defining the axis of the desire of the Actantial model by respectively setting the character with the user's Enneagram type as the subject and the core value in the type as the object. The axis of Power could be defined by the stress and security points in Enneagram. In this way, we can derive the themes of 9 Enneagram types and the corresponding Actantial model and make plots. The users will appreciate one of these reconstructed plots in different perspectives and themes, depending on their personality type. In this study, we applied the above methodology to the story of the pansori novel "Tokkijeon". User-centered storytelling is a new attempt to predict user's choice and reconstruct the story based on the user's personality and perspective.

  • Psychological research on the relationships between creativity and knowledge can be divided into two main streams, called tension view and foundation view. However most of the studies in this area have been too much focused on creative products which had a limit in investigating creative processes. In this study, to identify the relationships, we employed neuro-scientific approaches to investigating EEG (electroencephalogram) activity from professional computer programmers(n=10). Also the EEG alpha TRP (task related power) was compared with each other. The procedures including resting conditions with eye closed were followed by ordinary thinking process, creative thinking processes in a professional domain and a nonprofessional domain. As a result of EEG activity analysis, alpha deactivation was observed mainly in temporal lobe, especially in left-temporal lobe during creative thinking process of professional domain. The findings suggest that neuro-scientific approach supports the tension view, suggesting that the knowledge could hinder creativity.

  • The complementary effect between FDI and its absorptive capacity has drawn more attention than before. This paper intended to explore the relationship between energy intensity and such complementary effect. The absorptive capacity of FDI shows various aspects among which we focus on the human capital, the financial system and the infrastructure in this paper. Using the panel data from 1990 to 2011, the study is processed between the 20 OECD and 20 Non-OECD countries. The empirical results shown that for OECD country, a complementary effect exists between FDI and its absorbability and it has the controlling effect on energy reduction. But the effect is only significant in the human capital and the financial system. The infrastructure variable is less important in OECD country due to their high development level. However, for non-OECD country, the complementary effect between infrastructure and FDI reduces energy consumption significantly, it can get to the point that the process for infrastructure to attract FDI and also benefits from it only blow its way to the Non-OECD, developing countries, without andy special effects for the OECD countries which has already highly build up their infrastructure. Also, the financial system in Non-OECD countries is at the primary stage yet, which is not easy to contribute efficiency. To make a conclusion, the complementary effect between infrastructure and FDI in OECD country and which between finical system and FDI in non-OECD country cannot enhance energy efficiency as expected.
