  • Purpose: To implement evidence-based nursing, it is important to know where and how to find the best available evidence. This study was conducted to identify the results of a search from Ovid MEDLINE and to compare the results from Ovid MEDLINE with those from PubMed MEDLINE. Methods: Four different approaches via Ovid MEDLINE were used to search for guidelines on preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Outcomes of this study were the number of records and relevant literature, and the sensitivity and precision of the search methods via Ovid MEDLINE. Results: The number of retrieved items ranged 23 to 6,005 and that of relevant studies, 5 to 8 of 8. Simple searches resulted in the highest sensitivity of 100.0%. When using MeSH terms and limits feature, the precision was highest (21.7%) among four approaches for literature searches. Simple searches in Ovid had higher sensitivity and lower precision than those in PubMed. Conclusion: Simple searches in Ovid may be inefficient for busy clinicians compared to PubMed. However, to ensure a comprehensive and systematic literature search, using Ovid MEDLINE in addition to PubMed is recommended.

  • It is practiced by many Korean medical institutions to give weights to medical papers published n foreign journals covered by major international abstracts and indexes (A&I) in the evaluation of research performance. In an attempt to recommend the databases to be used for the evaluation of KOrean medical research papers, this study measured the extent of overlap records of Korean medical papaers retrieved from the three major medical databases, EMBASE, MEDLINE and SCISEARCH. Korean papers published in foreign journals between 1990 to 1995 were analyzed. It also analyzed the characteristics of journals where these Korean medical papers are published with respect to their subjects, publishing countries and languages. It is found that these is no difference among three databsases as far as the characteristics of journals where Korean medical papers are published are concerned with respect to their subjects, publishing countries and languages. Thus the number of papers retrieved from each database should be the major criterion to recommend the A&I databases to be used in the evalua ion of research performance. If one database must be chosen for the evaluation of Korean medical papers, it is probably the best to utilize SCISEARCH which is the most efficient database for verifying Korean medical papers in foreign journals. If two databases can be used, then EMBASE should be the next choice.

  • This article aims at finding the ways, on the basis of the studies about the behaviors to search the existing CD-ROM databases, so that the searchers who retrieve the on-line MEDLINE used in the medical libraries can use the data more efficiently than now. We gave the questionnaires to the librarians in 60 medical libraries and searched the literatures and realities on the behaviors of the data uses to examine the search behaviors of the MEDLINE in the medical libraries. The result is as follows: 1) The medical data system rate for single users was $53\%$ and the ons for multi users $43\%$. As for the time which users retrieve for a week, under two hours was $75\%$, between 3 and 8 hours $18.3\%$, and eve. 9 hours $6.7\%$. 2) The increasing factors of the search result are (1) an enough discussion and interview between librarians and users, and (2) the use of the correct indexing terms, Thesaurus, and Keyword. In principle users must search directly. However, the librarians searched instead in case that the retrieval result was under two hours a week$(75\%)$. 3) As for the search fee, $91\%$ was free and $9\%$ was charged. Also search effectiveness was enhanced by the means of Inter-Library Loan Service & Information Network. 4) The medical librarians answered the questionnaire that they need the application education of professional knowledge, medical terms(thesaurus) and electronic medium, and also they need the computer education, interview technique and reeducation to give a satisfactory service. 5) As for the satisfactory degree of MEDLINE application, they answered $44.6\%$ for economy, $38.2\%$ for the conveniency of the time required, and $58.9\%$ for the users' search satisfaction answered respectively. 6) The application of MEDLINE system enhanced the medical libraries' image and had an effect on the users' satisfaction of using the data and search, the data activities and the research achievement. 7) In the past MeSH was used but as the time passes CD-ROM MEDLINE search behavior was preferred to On-line one.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective method to convert and construct the MEDLINE, the world's largest biomedical bibliographic database, into linked data. To do this, we first derive the appropriate RDF schema by analyzing the MEDLINE record structure in detail, and convert each record into a valid RDF file in the derived schema. We apply the dual batch registration method to streamline the subject URI duplication checking procedure when merging all RDF files in the converted record unit and storing it in a single RDF triple storage. By applying this method, the number of RDF triple storage accesses for the subject URI duplication is reduced from 26,597,850 to 2,400, compared with the sequential configuration of linked data in units of RDF files. Therefore, it is expected that the result of this study will provide an important opportunity to eliminate the inefficiency in converting large volume bibliographic record sets into linked data, and to secure promptness and timeliness.

  • This paper presents a scientometric analysis of the growth of literature output in the field of Hepatitis covered in three bibliographic databases namely MEDLINE, CINAHL and IPA. The literature covered in three databases for the period 1984-2003 was considered. MEDLINE covered the maximum of 75750 records during the study period 1984 to 2003. This is followed by CINAHL and IPA databases. It is found that the annual growth rate of literature in a particular field of knowledge will not be uniform and in order to measure the rate of growth from year after year, the application of RGR is quite appropriate. The RGR has shown a decreasing trend, with a slight fluctuation of growth rate for the years 1985 and 1997. The output by colleges, universities, corporate sector and research institutions with reference to RGR and Dt has shown mixed results such as increasing trend, decreasing trend and fluctuation trend. Hepatitis research indicates a different picture when the RGR and Dt were calculated by year-wise both in terms of number of papers and number of pages.

  • Background: Scientometrics is a useful method for management of financial and human resources and has been applied many times in medical sciences during recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate the status of science production by Iranian scientists in the gastric cancer field based on the Medline database. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-cross sectional study Iranian science production concerning gastric cancer during 2000-2011 was investigated based on Medline. After two stages of searching, 121 articles were found, then we reviewed publication date, authors names, journal title, impact factor (IF), and cooperation coefficient between researchers. SPSS.19 was used for statistical analysis. Results: There was a significant increase in published articles about gastric cancer by Iranian researchers in Medline database during 2006-2011. Mean cooperation coefficient between researchers was $6.14{\pm}3.29$ person per article. Articles of this field were published in 19 countries and 56 journals. Those basex in Thailand, England, and America had the most published Iranian articles. Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Mohammadreza Zali had the most outstanding role in publishing scientific articles. Conclusions: According to results of this study, improving cooperation of researchers in conducting research and scientometric studies about other fields may have an important role in increasing both quality and quantity of published studies.

  • In order to analyze how accurately authors of Korean medical papers use MeSH terms, the key words of Korean medical papers assigned by authors (author terms) are compared with the MeSH terms listed in the corresponding MEDLINE records. A total of 1,826 author terms were used in the 415 Korean Journal of Parasitology papers published between 1989 and 1998. An average of 4.4. author terms and 9.9 MeSH terms were assigned to each paper. 35.5% of author terms matched exactly or partially with MeSH terms, the average being 1.6 terms per paper. The exact match terms consisted only 10.1%. The result of this study shows that the major difference between author terms and MeSH terms are in the use of subheadings and check tags. It indicates that the Korean authors in general do not have sufficient knowledge in selecting and using MeSH terms.
