Petrology and Structural Geology of the Late Cretaceous Volcanic Rocks in the Northeastern Part of Yucheon Basin (유천분지(楡川盆地) 북동부(北東部) 백악기(白堊記) 화산암류(火山岩類)의 화산암석학(火山岩石學) 및 지질구조(地質構造))

  • The studied area is largely occupied by thick piles of the late Cretaceous volcanic rocks of the Yucheon group, which is northeastern border part of the vast volcanic region in the Yucheon basin. The Yucheon group overlies the Geoncheonri Formation and is intruded by granitic and dioritic stocks and dykes. The group can be devided into two parts; the lower is Jusasan andesitic rocks which was called as Jusasan Porphyrite Formation by Tadeiwa in 1929, and the upper is Unmunsa rhyolitic rocks. The volcanic pile consists mainly of various tuffs such as tuff breccia, lapilli tuff, coarse to fine tuff and tuffaceous sediments, and interlayered flows, which range from basaltic andesite to rhyolite in their lithology. The results of petrochemical and volcanostratigraphic studies on the Jusasan andesitic socks suggest that the volcanic rocks were derived from two cyclic evolutions of magmatic fractionation. Systematic study of 5226 joints from the area reveals two sets of steep joints striking $N20^{\circ}-40^{\circ}E$ and $N40^{\circ}-70^{\circ}W$, are dominant and coincide with the fault pattern developed in the area. Three defferent maximum principal stress axes were recognized from conjugate shear joints, which are trending east-west, north-northwest, and north-northeast.

Comparison of Laplace and Double Pareto Penalty: LASSO and Elastic Net (라플라스와 이중 파레토 벌점의 비교: LASSO와 Elastic Net)

  • Lasso (Tibshirani, 1996) and Elastic Net (Zou and Hastie, 2005) have been widely used in various fields for simultaneous variable selection and coefficient estimation. Bayesian methods using a conditional Laplace and a double Pareto prior specification have been discussed in the form of hierarchical specification. Full conditional posterior distributions with each priors have been derived. We compare the performance of Bayesian lassos with Laplace prior and the performance with double Pareto prior using simulations. We also apply the proposed Bayesian hierarchical models to real data sets to predict the collapse of governments in Asia.

  • An improved method based on direct extraction and simultaneous optimization is developed to determine model parameters of symmetric inductors fabricated by the high resistivity(HR) silicon-on-insulator(SOI) RF CMOS process. In order to improve modeling accuracy, several model parameters are directly extracted by Y and Z-parameter equations derived from two equivalent circuits of symmetric inductor and grounded center-tap one, and the number of unknown parameters is reduced using parallel resistance and total inductance equations. In order to improve optimization accuracy, two sets of measured S-parameters are simultaneously optimized while same model parameters in two equivalent circuits are set to common variables.

Improved Detection of Mycobacterium leprae by One-tube Nested Polymerase Chain Reaction

  • One-tube nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was evaluated for its efficacy in detecting Mycobacterium leprae in biopsy samples from leprosy patients. Primers were derived from the M leprae-specific element (RLEP) sequences which yield a 230 bp fragment. The specificity and the sensitivity of the one-tube nested PCR were compared with those of single PCR for detecting M leprae. The results showed that the one-tube nested PCR was about 100 times more sensitive than that of the single indicating the one-tube nested primer sets developed in this study can be an effective screening tool for the detection of M leprae in clinical diagnostic laboratories.

  • For the effective analysis of two dimensional plane problems, Treffiz finite elements and cavity elements have been proposed. These element matrix equaitons were formulated on the basis of hybrid variational principle and Treffiz function sets derived consitstently from the complex theoy of plane elasticity. In order to suggest the accuracy chatacteristics of the proposed Treffiz elements typical plane problems were analyzed and these results were compared with ones obtained by using the conveintional displacement type elements. The accuracy of the proposed elements is less sensitive to the element size and shape than the conventional displacement type elements. These elements, being able to be formed with multi-nodes, give the convenient modeling of an analytic domain. The cavity elements give the comparatively exact values of stress concentration factors of stress intensity factors and can be effectively used for the analysis of mechanical stuctures containing various cavities.

  • Reachability analysis of finite state machines is very useful for many computer-aided design applications such as communication protocol or microprecessor design. We present new techniques to improve approximate reachability analysis. The key idea is to used an iterative approximate reachability analysis technique in which don't care sets derived from previous iterations are used to improve the approximation in subsequent iterations. Experimental results show that the new techniques can improve reachability analysis significantly compared to existing analysis techniques.

  • This paper proposes the use of an adaptive Wiener filter for edge-preserving image filtering. Images are partitioned into a set of blocks of pixels which is divided into five subsets of blocks according to their edge contents and orientations. Each subset of blocks is used to define a covariance matrix, from which a Wiener filter is derived. Five covariance matrices and Wiener filters are thus obtained. An image-block classifier using the five sets of covariance matrices of the class is designed to classify each incoming block of pixels according to its edge content in the presence of noise. Experimental results are included to verify the usefulness of the proposed method.

Reconstruction and Validation of Gridded Product of Wind/Wind-stress derived by Satellite Scatterometer Data over the World Ocean and its Impact for Air-Sea Interaction Study

  • We have persistently constructed gridded products of surface wind/wind stress over the world ocean using satellite scatterometer (ERS and Qscat). They are available for users as the Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote sensing Observation (J-OFURO) data together with heat flux components. Recently, a new version data of the Qscat/SeaWinds based on improved algorithm for rain flag and high wind-speed range have been delivered, and allowed us to reconstruct gridded product with higher spatial resolution. These products are validated by comparisons with in-situ measurement data by mooring buoys such as TAO/TRITON, NDBC and the Kuroshio Extension Observation (KEO) buoys, together with numerical weather prediction model products such as the NCEP-1 and 2. Results reveal that the new product has almost the same magnitude in mean difference as the previous version of Qscat product and much smaller than the NCEP-1 and 2. On the other hand, it is slightly larger root-mean-square (RMS) difference than the previous one and NCEPs for the comparison using the KEO buoy data. This may be due to the deficit of high wind speed data in the buoy measurement. The high resolution product, together with sea surface temperature (SST) one, is used to examine a new type of relationship between the lower atmosphere and upper ocean in the Kuroshio Extension region.

Icefex: Protocol Format Extraction from IL-based Concolic Execution

  • Protocol reverse engineering is useful for many security applications, including intelligent fuzzing, intrusion detection and fingerprint generation. Since manual reverse engineering is a time-consuming and tedious process, a number of automatic techniques have been proposed. However, the accuracy of these techniques is limited due to the complexity of binary instructions, and the derived formats have missed constraints that are critical for security applications. In this paper, we propose a new approach for protocol format extraction. Our approach reasons about only the evaluation behavior of a program on the input message from concolic execution, and enables field identification and constraint inference with high accuracy. Moreover, it performs binary analysis with low complexity by reducing modern instruction sets to BIL, a small, well-specified and architecture-independent language. We have implemented our approach into a system called Icefex and evaluated it over real-world implementations of DNS, eDonkey, FTP, HTTP and McAfee ePO protocols. Experimental results show that our approach is more accurate and effective at extracting protocol formats than other approaches.

An Effective Orientation-based Method and Parameter Space Discretization for Defined Object Segmentation

  • While non-predefined object segmentation (NDOS) distinguishes an arbitrary self-assumed object from its background, predefined object segmentation (DOS) pre-specifies the target object. In this paper, a new and novel method to segment predefined objects is presented, by globally optimizing an orientation-based objective function that measures the fitness of the object boundary, in a discretized parameter space. A specific object is explicitly described by normalized discrete sets of boundary points and corresponding normal vectors with respect to its plane shape. The orientation factor provides robust distinctness for target objects. By considering the order of transformation elements, and their dependency on the derived over-segmentation outcome, the domain of translations and scales is efficiently discretized. A branch and bound algorithm is used to determine the transformation parameters of a shape model corresponding to a target object in an image. The results tested on the PASCAL dataset show a considerable achievement in solving complex backgrounds and unclear boundary images.
