Dynamic Soil Properties of Frozen and Unfrozen Soils from Terra Nova Bay in Eastern Antarctica (동남극 테라노바만 흙 시료의 동결 및 비동결 상태에서의 동적특성 평가)

  • The geotechnical characteristics of frozen ground is one of the key design issues for the construction of infrastructure in cold region. In this study, the dynamic properties (shear modulus and damping ratio) of frozen and unfrozen soils sampled from Terra Nova Bay located in eastern Antarctica, where Jang Bogo station was built, were investigated using Stokoe-type resonant column test (RC). In order to freeze the reconstituted soil specimen, the RC testing equipment was modified by adding a cooling system. A series of resonant column tests were performed in frozen and unfrozen soils with various soil densities and temperatures. The shear modulus (G) and damping ratio (D) of soil frozen at $-7^{\circ}C$ were compared with those of unfrozen soil. In addition, the effect of temperature rise on the maximum shear modulus ($G_{max}$) and damping ratio was experimentally investigated. This study has significance in that the difference of dynamic soil properties between frozen and unfrozen soils and the effect of temperature rise on frozen soil were identified.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF CORES IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS; THE ORION A, B AND λ ORIONIS CLOUDS

  • We observed 80 dense cores ($N(H_2)$ > $10^{22}cm^{-2}$) in the Orion molecular cloud complex which contains the Orion A (39 cores), B (26 cores), and ${\lambda}$ Orionis (15 cores) clouds. We investigate the behavior of the different molecular tracers and look for chemical variations of cores in the three clouds in order to systematically investigate the effects of stellar feedback. The most commonly detected molecular lines (with the detection rates higher than 50%) are $N_2H^+$, $HCO^+$, $H^{13}CO^+$, $C_2H$, HCN, and $H_2CO$. The detection rates of dense gas tracers, $N_2H^+$, $HCO^+$, $H^{13}CO^+$, and $C_2H$ show the lowest values in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud. We find differences in the D/H ratio of $H_2CO$ and the $N_2H^+/HCO^+$ abundance ratios among the three clouds. Eight starless cores in the Orion A and B clouds exhibit high deuterium fractionations, larger than 0.10, while in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud, no cores reveal the high ratio. These chemical properties could support that cores in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud are affected by the photo-dissociation and external heating from the nearby H II region. An unexpected trend was found in the $[N_2H^+]/[HCO^+]$ ratio with a higher median value in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud than in the Orion A/B clouds than; typically, the $[N_2H^+]/[HCO^+]$ ratio is lower in higher temperatures and lower column densities. This could be explained by a longer timescale in the prestellar stage in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud, resulting in more abundant nitrogen-bearing molecules. In addition to these chemical differences, the kinematical difference was also found among the three clouds; the blue excess, which is an infall signature found in optically thick line profiles, is 0 in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud while it is 0.11 and 0.16 in the Orion A and B clouds, respectively. This result could be another evidence of the negative feedback of active current star formation to the next generation of star formation.

Preparation and Characterization of High Performance Activated Carbon Fibers from Stabilized PAN fibers (PAN계 안정화섬유로부터 고기능성 활성탄소섬유의 제조 및 특성)

  • Activated carbon fibers were prepared from stabilized PAN fibers by physical and chemical activation to compare their characteristics. In this study, stabilized PAN fibers were activated by physical activation with steam and CO$_2$, and by chemical activation with KOH. The fabricated activated carbon fibers were evaluated and compared such as specific surface area, pore size distribution, pore volume, and amount of iodine adsorption. In the steam activation, a specific surface area of 1635 m$^2$/g was obtained after heat treatment at 990$^{\circ}C$. Otherwise, in the CO$_2$ activation, produced activated carbon fibers had been a specific surface area of 671 m$^2$/g after heat treatment at 990$^{\circ}C$. In chemical activation using KOH, a specific surface area of 3179 m$^2$/g was obtained with a KOH/ stabilized PAN fiber ratio of 1.5 : 1 at 900$^{\circ}C$. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms for fabricated activated carbon fibers showed type I and transformation from type I and II in the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller (B.D.D.T) classification. Increasing specific surface area Increased the amount of iodine adsorption in both activation methods. Because the ionic radius of iodine was smaller than the interior micropore size of activated carbon fibers.

Separation and Elution Behavior of Some Iron(Ⅲ)porphyrin Complexes by Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography (역상 액체 크로마토그래피에 의한 Iron(Ⅲ)porphyrin 착화합물들의 분리 및 용리거동에 관한 연구)

  • Some iron(III)porphyrin complexes were prepared, and identified by the spectroscopic methods. Elution behavior of iron(III)porphyrin complexes was investigated by reversed-phase HPLC. The optimum conditions for the separation of iron(III)porphyrin complexes were examined with respect to flow rate and mobile phase strength. These complexes were successfully separated on NOVA-PAK $C_{18}$ column using methanol / water(95/5) for $[T_pCF_3PP)Fe(R)]$ and methanol / water (98/2) for $[(P)Fe(C_6F_5)]$ as a mobile phase. It was found that these complexes were largely eluted in an acceptable range of capacity factor value ($0{\leq}logk'{\leq}1$). The dependence of the capacity factor (k') on the volume fraction of water in the binary mobile phase as well as the dependence of k' on the liquid-liquid extraction distribution ratio$(D_c)$ in methanol-water / n-pentadecane extraction system showed a good linearity. It means that the retention of iron(III)porphyrin complexes on NOVA-PAK $C_{18}$ column is largely due to the solvophobic effect. Also, there was a good linear dependence of the capacity factor(k') on the column temperature and enthalpy calculated by van't Hoff plot. From these results, it was confirmed that the retention mechanism of iron(III)porphyrin complexes in reversed-phase liquid chromatography was invariant under the condition of various temperature, and the solvophobic binding process exhibited isoequilibrium behavior.

Real-Time Implementation of MPEG-1 Layer III Audio Decoder Using TMS320C6201 (TMS320C6201을 이용한 MPEG-1 Layer III 오디오 디코더의 실시간 구현)

  • The goal of this research is the real-time implementation of MPEG-1 Layer III audio decoder using the fixed-point digital signal processor of TMS320C6201 The main job for this work is twofold: one is to convert floating-point operation in the decoder into fixed-point operation while maintaining the high resolution, and the other is to optimize the program to make it run in real-time with memory size as small as possible. We, especially, devote much time to the descaling module in the decoder for conversion of floating-point operation into fixed-point operation with high accuracy. The inverse modified cosine transform(IMDCT) and synthesis polyphase filter bank modules are optimized in order to reduce the amount of computation and memory size. After the optimization process, in this paper, the implemented decoder uses about 26% of maximum computation capacity of TMS320C6201. The program memory, data ROM, data RAM used in the decoder are about 6.77kwords, 3.13 kwords and 9.94 kwords, respectively. Comparing the PCM output of fixed-point computation with that of floating-point computation, we achieve the signal-to-noise ratio of more than 60 dB. A real-time operation is demonstrated on the PC using the sound I/O and host communication functions in the EVM board.

A Study on the Manoeuvrability as Function of Stern Hull Form in Shallow Water (선미형상을 고려한 천수역에서의 조종성능에 관한 연구)

  • A numerical simulation studies were performed to investigate a manoeuvring characteristics as function of stern hull form with the mathematical model. In order to consider the effect of the stern hull form and obtain the manoeuvring characteristics, a parameter($C_{wa}$) which is aft. water plane area coefficient is modified. Because modifying $C_{wa}$(${\pm}2%$) means that the stern hull form is modified to V-type or U-type, the numerical simulation was performed with this modified $C_{wa}$. A changing trend for the manoeuvring characteristics not only in deep water but also in shallow water such as directional stability, turning and zig-zag was investigated and presented as the results. Present study showed that the manoeuvrability in shallow water largely changed when the draught and water depth ratio(=d/H) become 0.5, and the stern hull form can affect to the manoeuvrability of a vessel navigating in restricted water depth. In addition, it showed that approaching the stern hull to U-type makes the advance and tactical diameter of turning motion large and the overshoot angle of zig-zag motions small. Otherwise, it showed approaching the stern hull form to V-type makes the advance and tactical diameter of turning motion small and the overshoot angle of zig-zag motions large in the present study.

Effects of Ventilation Systems on Interior Environment of the Growing-finishing Pig House in Korea (육성$\cdot$비육돈사 내에서 환기형태별 환경조사 연구)

  • An experiment was conducted to establish comparison of ventilation efficiency in an enclosed and conventional growing-finishing pig house. The experimental pigs were in winter and summer. The main results of the experiment are as follows : Then the air from planar slot inlet the pig house flow out through the sidewall outlet operated by exhaust fan(Gl). The second structure has an air input through the circular duct inlet are plated side the juncture of the entering wall and the air into the pig house flow out through the chimney and pit outlet are operated by exhaust fan(G2). Through the air into relay fan the pig house flow out through the curtains in sidewall(G3). Similarly, air comes in through the circular duct inlet are placed the air into the pig house flow out through the curtains in sidewall (G4). Air flow rate on the floor level which is the low part of pen and the living area of pigs in the G2 and G4 system during winter was measured at 0.2 to 0.3 m/s at the 0.5 to 0.6 m/s at the maximum ventilation efficiency. As for the results of detrimental gas(ammonia) concentration ratio analysis, while G2 and G4 system sustained of summer 13.3 $\~$ 16.6 ppm, winter 14.0 $\~$ 14.6 ppm level, Gl and G3 system sustained of summer 14.6 $\~$ 20.3 ppm, winter 20.3 $\~$ 25.0 ppm, and the latter one is lower than that of the G1 and G3 system.

Compositional Change of MgO Barrier and Interface in CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB Tunnel Junction after Annealing

  • Recent experiments have demonstrated high TMR ratios in MTJs with the MgO barrier [1,2]. The CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB junctions showed better properties than the CoFe/MgO/CoFe junctions because the MgO layer had a good crystalline structure with (001) texture and smooth and sharp interface between CoFeB/MgO [3]. The amorphous CoFeB with 20 at%B starts the crystallization at $340^{\circ}C$ [4] and this crystallization of the CoFeB helps obtaining the high TMR ratio. In this work, the compositional changes in the MgO barrier and at the interface of CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB after the CoFeB crystallization were studied in annealed MTJs. XPS depth profiles were utilized. TEM analyses showed that the MgO barrier had (100) texture on CoFeB in the junctions. B in the bottom CoFeB layer diffused into the MgO barrier and B-oxide was formed at the interface of CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB after the CoFeB crystallization.

Adsorption Characteristics of H2S on Adsorbent Made by Sewage Sludge in Fixed Bed Adsorption Column (하수슬러지를 활용하여 제조한 흡착제의 고정흡착층에서의 H2S 흡착특성)

  • $H_2S$ adsorption characteristics of adsorbent made by sewage sludge were investigated. For analyses of the manufactured adsorbent, various methods such as Iodine adsorptivity, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and measurements of BET surface area and pore volume were adopted. As the major adsorption characteristic, breakthrough curve was measured by using a continuous fixed bed adsorption column for operating variables such as adsorption temperature ($25{\sim}45^{\circ}C$), aspect ratio (L/D)(3~9), gas flow rate (0.1~2.0 liter/min) and $H_2S$ gas concentration (50~200 ppm). The experimental result showed that the carbonization and activation of sewage sludge are very important for the improvement in $H_2S$ adsorption capacity.

Performance Analysis of IBAC DAB System for Bandwidth in Korea FM Interference Environmentlevance Feedback (국내 FM 간섭환경에서 대역폭에 따른 IBAC DAB 시스템의 성능분석)

  • The IBAC DAB system was interfered by existing FM broadcasting signal as was used guardband within existing FM broadcasting. The FM interference signals are very important parameter in performance evaluation of IBAC DAB system. We got the characteristic of FM PSD in according to instantaneous change and average characteristic of FM broadcasting signal in according to characteristic of FM channel. In this paper, based on proposed IBAC DAB system, we analyze effects of FM interference for occupied bandwidth and performance of IBAC DAB modeling various FM interference signals with sum of sinusoid function using C language, suggest FM interference ratio that can maintain performance. We was know that IBAC DAB system have a great performance variation in according to average characteristic of FM PSD by simulation results, also, FM interference ration that can maintain performance of system is 10dB.
