Numerical simulation on two-dimensional turbine cascade flow has been performed using compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The flow equations are written in a cartesian coordinate system, then mapped into a generalized body-fitted ones. All direction of viscous terms are incoporated and turbulent effects are modeled using the extended ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model. Equations are discretized using control volume SIMPLE algorithm on the nonstaggered grid sysetem. Applications are made at a VKI turbine cascade flow in atransonic wind-tunnel and compared to experimental data. Present numerical results are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results and simulate the compressible viscous flow characteristics inside the turbine blade passage.
In the linear regression model $y_{i}$ = .alpha. $x_{i}$$^{T}$ .beta. + .epsilon.$_{i}$ , i = 1,2,...,n, the weighted pairwise absolute deviation (WPAD) estimator was defined by minimizing the dispersion function D (.beta.) = .sum..sum.$_{{i$w_{{ij}}$$\mid$$r_{j}$ (.beta.) $r_{i}$ (.beta.)$\mid$, where $r_{i}$ (.beta.)'s are residuals and $w_{{ij}}$'s are weights. This estimator can achive bounded total influence with positive breakdown by choice of weights $w_{{ij}}$. In this paper, we consider a more general type of dispersion function than that of D(.beta.) and propose a pairwise GM-estimator based on the dispersion function. Under some regularity conditions, the proposed estimator has a bounded influence function, a high breakdown point, and asymptotically a normal distribution. Results of a small-sample Monte Carlo study are also presented. presented.
The strain state during the continuous confined strip shearing (CCSS) based on ECAP was tackled by means of a two-dimensional FEM analysis. The deformation of AA 1100 sheet in the CCSS apparatus was composed of three distinct processes of rolling, bending and shearing. The pronounced difference in the friction conditions on the upper and lower roll surfaces led to the different variation of the strain component ${epsilon}_13$ throughout the thickness of the aluminum sheet. Strain accompanying bending was negligible because of a large radius of curvature. The shear deformation was concentrated at the corner of the CCSSchannel where the abrupt change in the direction of material flow occurred. The process variables involving the CCSS-die design and frictions between tools and strip influenced the evolution of shear strains during CCSS.
The flow through multistage turbomachinery is affected by the interaction between a rotor and a stator. The interaction is due to the inviscid potential effect and viscous effect between closely spaced rotor and stator airfoils. Three-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model are solved using a non-staggered grid system. This method is applied to the flow through a multistage compressor measured by Stauter et al. The results have shown strong interaction between the rotating and stationary flow field. The decay of rotor wake and the pressure profiles agree very well with experimental data. The wake produced by rotor causes unsteady pressure on the surface of a stator. The rotor/stator interaction produces the unsteady pressure force on the rotor and stator blades.
A numerical investigation has been carried out for the flow characteristics after exchange of some filters from the original layer to the new low pressure loss layer with equal filtering efficiency. The solution domain includes upper plenum, filter layer, clean space, access panels, and lower plenum. The concept of the distributed pressure resistance was applied to describe the momentum loss in filter layer and access panels. The evolution of the flow field is simulated using the low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. over bar turbulent model and SIMPLE algorithm based on the finite volume method. As a result, after the exchange of filter layer the power requirement can be reduced by 8-9 percent. The results also demonstrate that the perpendicularity of the flow near access panels may become worse at new filter layer than origianl filter layer. But the situation can be recovered by adjusting the jopening ratio of access panels.
The buoyancy-driven turbulent thermal convection is predicted using an anisotropic hybrid turbulence model, which is incorporated with a low Reynolds k-.epsilon. turbulence model and an anisotropic buoyant part of algebraic stress model(ASM). The numerical predictions are compared with the Davidson's model,(1) the full ASM and the experimental results of Cheesewright et al.(2) All the models are shown to predict good agreements with the experiments for the averaged turbulence quantities. It is found that the effect of an anisotropic part on the Reynolds stress and the turbulent heat fluxes is substantial. In this study, the present hybrid model gives a fairly reasonable prediction in terms of the computational accuracy, convergence and stability. The contribution of an anisotropic buoyant part to turbulent heat fluxes are also scrutinized over the range of Rayleigh numbers $(4.79{\times}10^{10}{\le}Ra{\le}7.46{\times}10^{10}).$
Amyloid precursor protein (APP), which is critically involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), is cleaved by gamma/epsilon-secretase activity and results in the generation of different lengths of the APP Intracellular C-terminal Domain (AICD). In spite of its small size and short half-life, AICD has become the focus of studies on AD pathogenesis. Recently, it was demonstrated that AICD binds to different intracellular binding partners ('adaptor protein'), which regulate its stability and cellular localization. In terms of choice of adaptor protein, phosphorylation seems to play an important role. AICD and its various adaptor proteins are thought to take part in various cellular events, including regulation of gene transcription, apoptosis, calcium signaling, growth factor, and $NF-{\kappa}B$ pathway activation, as well as the production, trafficking, and processing of APP, and the modulation of cytoskeletal dynamics. This review discusses the possible roles of AICD in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases including AD.
This paper presents the development of a two-dimensional model for investigating the fluid flow in water jet and calculating the velocity and pressure distributions. The mathematical formulation as a standard k-$\epsilon$ model was solved employing a general thermofluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations(SIMPLE) algorithm. The developed code was applied to water jet design to determine the nozzle size, and investigated the effect of the change of nozzle location. Calculated results showed that the flow pattern is not changed as the change of nozzle location.
In this study, we show the numerical and the experimental results for fluid motions inside a rectangular container subjected to a background rotation added by a rotational oscillation. In the numerical computation, we used a parallel computer system of PC-cluster type. Attention is given to dependence of the flow patterns on the parameter change. It shows that the flow becomes in a periodic state at low Reynolds numbers and undergoes a transition to a chaotic motion at high Reynolds numbers. It also shows that the fluid motion tends to be depth-independent at ${\epsilon}$ up to 0.3 for Re lower than 5235.
This paper presents the results of numerical simulation of wind environment and wind coefficient around super high-rise building. The analysis of aerodynamic response due to wind-induced forces and wind effect to surrounding buildings is important to high-rise building. This paper simulates the wind force to the high-rise building and wind flow pattern around the high-rise building, and shows the usability of CFD analysis to design process of high-rise building. A Navier-Stokes-Solver (FLUENT) with Quick spatial discretization scheme and RNG $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model has been applied to the computation of the three dimensional turbulent flow.
