Fabrication and Characterization of High Temperature Superconducting Thin Film on Metallic Substrate Using Laser Ablation (레이저 증착법을 이용한 금속기판상 고온초전도 박막증착 및 특성분석)

  • Laser ablation was used to fabricate superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) thin films on metallic substrates with an YSZ buffer layer. An ArF excimer laser with an wavelength of 193 nm was used to deposit both YSZ buffer layer and superconducting thin film. The characterizations of thin films were performed and compared. With a 200 nm YSZ buffer layer, c-axis orientation and $T_c$=85 K were obtained for a 200 nm-thick YBCO film.

Effect of Acvated Oxygen Plasma on the Crystallinity and Superconductivity of $Yba_2Cu_3-O_{7-x}$ Thin Films Prepated by Reactive Co-evaporation method

  • As-grown $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ films on MgO(100)substrates were prepated by a reactive co-evaporation method, and effects of activated oxygen plasma on the crystallinity and superconductivity at substrate temperature ranging from $450^{\circ}C$ to $590^{\circ}C$ were investigated. The film deposited under the activated oxygen plasma at the substrate temperature of $590^{\circ}C$ had a single crystal phase. Whereas, when films were deposited under only oxygen gas, they were not in perfect single crystal phase but with slight polycrystalline nature. When the substrate temperature was $590^{\circ}C$, $Tc_{zero}$'s were 83K and 80K for films with and without activated oxygen plasma, respectively. The critical temperature, the crystal structure and the surface morphology of as-grown films were found to be insensitive to the activated oxygen plasma which is introduced during deposition instead of oxygen gas, but the crystalline quality was improved somewhat by the introduction by the introduction of actvated oxygen plasma.

  • For many large-scale applications of high-temperature superconducting materials, large critical current density($J_c$) in high applied magnetic fields are required. A number of methods have been reported to introduce artificial pinning centers(APCs) in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$(YBCO) films for enhancement of their $J_c$. In this work, we investigated electric characteristic of YBCO films on $SrTiO_3$ (100) substrates whose surfaces were modified by the introduction of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). Au nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on STO substrates with one of typical solution techniques, self assembled monolayer. After heating the STO substrates with Au nanoparticles, the size of Au nanoparticles was around 29~32 nm in height and 41~49 nm in diameter. XRD diffraction patterns taken on the YBCO film with Au nanoparticles show the c-axis orientation. The measured $T_c$ of YBCO /AuNPs films was around 89K and the $J_c$ was 0.75 MA/$cm^2$ at 65 K and 1 T.

TEM study on a-axis outgrowth formation in c-axis oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ thin films

  • Using modified melt-textured grown targets, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition technique at the laser energy density from 1 J/cm$_2$ to 4 J/cm$_2$. All the films showed c-axis preferred orientations, however, a-axis outgrowths on the film surface were considerably increased with an increase of the laser energy density. To examine the origin of the a-axis outgrowth formation, the microstructures of films deposited at 2 J/cm$_2$ and 4 J/cm$_2$ were investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution electron microscopy. It was shown that a significant number of Y$_2$O$_3$ inclusions were formed during the growth of c-axis oriented films at 4 J/cm$_2$. These inclusions formed nucleation sites for the a-axis outgrowths. It is considered that, due to the unstable growth conditions with a high flux density of incident vapor species and the strain induced by the surrounding c-axis films, the Y$_2$O$_3$ inclusions would prefer the nucleation of α-axis grains.

  • The high-$T_c$ superconducting phase, $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$, was deposited on the single crystal MgO substrate, using a liquid aerosol feed method in a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PECVD) reactor. The effect of the plasma distribution depending on the design of a reactor was studied by the analysis of the microstructures of thin films. The particles landed were frequently observed on the films and the two causes that were responsible for the particle deposition were explained. The particles were deposited by the unstable and non-uniform plasma and the low evaporation rate of the precursors. Also, the thin film deposition rate decreased significantly as the distance between the evaporating location and the substrate increased.

  • YBCO thin films on metal substrates were prepared by the metal-organic deposition using trifluoroacetates (TFA-MOD). To compensate the loss of Ba element from the precursor films due to the reaction with $CeO_2$ cap layer, we have employed Ba-excessive precursor solutions of $YBa_{2+x}Cu_{3}O_{7-{\delta}}$ ($0{\le}x{\le}0.1$). The precursor solutions were dip-coated on the metal substrates with $CeO_2$ cap layer, initially heated up to $400^{\circ}C$, and finally fired at the various high temperatures for 2 h in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. With this approach, YBCO films possessing critical temperature over 85 K could be successfully prepared on the metal substrates. The highest $T_{c,zero}$ value of 86 K was obtained from the Ba-excessive YBCO film of x=0.005 in $YBa_{2+x}Cu_{3}O_{7-{\delta}}$ fired at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. However, unexpected $T_c$ suppression even in Ba-excessive YBCO samples requires further identification.

Fabrication of YBCO Superconducting Film with $CeO_2$/$BaTiO_3$Double Buffer Layer ($CeO_2$/$BaTiO_3$이중완충막을 이용한 YBCO 박막 제작)

  • We have fabricated good quality superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{7-x}$(YBCO) thin films on Hastelloy(Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) metallic substrates with CeO$_2$and BaTiO$_3$buffer layers in-situ by pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. YBCO film with CeO$_2$single buffer layer shows T$_{c}$ of 71.64 K and the grain size less than 0.1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. When BaTiO$_3$ is used as a single buffer layer, the grain size of YBCO is observed to be larger than that of YBCO/CeO$_2$by 200 times and the transition temperature of the film is enhanced to be about 84 K. CeO$_2$/BaTiO$_3$double buffer layer has been adopted to enhance the superconducting properties, which results in the enhancement of the critical temperature and the critical current density to be about 85 K and 8.4$\times$10$^4$ A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 77 K, respectively mainly due to the enlargement of the grain size of YBCO film.ilm.

  • The eleventh-order coupled line lowpass filter(LPF) was designed to suppress harmonics and spurious signals. The microstrip type LPF was fabricated using a high-$T_{c}$ superconductor(HTS) $YBa_{2}$$Cu_{3}$$O_{7-x}$(YBCO) thin film with the $CeO_{2}$ buffer layer which was deposited on the sapphire ($Al_{2}O_{3}$) substrate of 30 x 30 $mm^{2}$. The coupled-line type LPF was designed for 1.2 GHz of cutoff frequency with 0.01 dB of ripple level at passband. The fabricated HTS LPF shows excellent attenuation characteristics in stopband of 1.2~9.5GHz (7-attenuation poles in the stopband), and shows low insertion loss (0.2 dB) and return loss (17.1 dB) in the pass- band. These measured results match well with those obtained by the EM simulation. This clearly demonstrates that the HTS LPF can suppress harmonics and spurious signals effectively.

  • [$YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$] thin films were deposited on various buffered-templates by a metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD). Three different templates of $CeO_2/YSZ/CeO_2/pure-Ni(CYC),\;CeO_2/YSZ/Y_2O_3/Ni-3at.%W(YYC)$ and $CeO_2/IBAD-YSZ$/stainless steel were used. The Ni and Ni-W alloy tapes were biaxially textured by cold rolling and annealing heat treatment. The dense YBCO films were grown on both the IBAD and YYC templates with no microcrack, while the YBCO films on the CYC templates were grown with the formation of microcracks and NiO. The YBCO film on the YYC template showed the higher $I_c$ than that on CYC template. Especially, the IBAD templates with a thin $CeO_2$(type I) and thick $CeO_2$(type II) top layer were used to compare the deposition nature of the YBCO on them. Comparing the current property of the YBCO films on IBAD templates, the YBCO film deposited on thick $CeO_2$ layer was better than the film on thin $CeO_2$ layer.
