Grain growth and superconducting properties of melt-processed (Y-Sm-Nd)-Ba-Cu-O composite oxides

  • [ $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y$ ] [(YSN)-123] high $T_c$ composite superconductors with $CeO_2$ addition were systematically investigated by top seeded melt growth (TSMG) process in air atmosphere. A melt textured $NdBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (Nd-123) single crystal was used as a seed for achieving the c-axis alignment large grains perpendicular to the surface of (YSN)-123 composite oxides. The size of $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5$ [(YSN)211] nonsuperconducting inclusions of the melt textured (YSN)-123 samples with $CeO_2$ addition were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the (YSN)123 superconducting matrix except in the region very close to the Nd-123 seed crystal. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition of 91 K.

  • The effects of activator ion on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of $LaNbO_4:RE^{3+}$ (RE = Dy, Dy/Sm, Sm) phosphors were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns exhibited that all the phosphors showed a monoclinic system with a main (112) diffraction peak, irrespective of the concentration and type of activator ions. The grain size showed a slightly decreasing tendency as the concentration of $Sm^{3+}$ ions increased. The excitation spectra of the $LaNbO_4:Dy^{3+}$, $Sm^{3+}$ phosphor powders consisted of a strong charge transfer band centered at 259 nm in the range of 220-290 nm and five weak peaks. The emission spectra of the $La_{0.95}NbO_4$:5 mol% $Dy^{3+}$ phosphors exhibited two intense yellow and blue bands centered at 575 nm and 479 nm respectively, which resulted from the $^4F_{9/2}{\rightarrow}^6H_{13/2}$ and $^4F_{9/2}{\rightarrow}^6H_{15/2}$ transitions of $Dy^{3+}$. As the concentration of $Sm^{3+}$ was increased, the intensity of the yellow emission band was gradually decreased, while those of orange and red emission bands centered at 604 and 646 nm began to appear and reached maxima at 5 mol%, and then decreased rapidly with further increases in the $Sm^{3+}$ concentration. These results indicated that white light emission could be realized by controlling the concentrations of the $Dy^{3+}$ and $Sm^{3+}$ ions incorporated into the $LaNbO_4$ host crystal.

Effects of the Re-oxidation Temperature and Time on the PTC Properties of Sm-doped BaTiO3 (Sm을 첨가한 BaTiO3계의 재산화 온도 및 시간에 따른 PTC 특성 변화)

  • We investigated the effects of the re-oxidation temperature and time on the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistivity characteristics of Sm-doped $BaTiO_3$ sintered at $1200{\sim}1260^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in a reducing atmosphere (3% $H_2/N_2$), followed by re-oxidization processes in air, in which re-oxidization temperature and time were $600{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ and $1{\sim}10$h, respectively. The result reveals that Smdoped (Ba,Ca)$TiO_3$ ceramics fired in a reducing atmosphere exhibit low PTC characteristics, whereas the sample re-oxidized at $800^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air exhibit pronounced PTC characteristics. The room-temperature resistivity and jumping characteristics of resistivity (${\rho}_{max}/{\rho}25^{\circ}C$) decrease with Sm contents. The PTC characteristics with reoxidization time at $800^{\circ}C$ have improved about $2{\sim}3$ orders of magnitude whereas differed according to the sintering temperature. The 0.7 at% Sm-doped (Ba,Ca)$TiO_3$ samples reveal the best PTC characteristics in the present range of formula and processes.

Fabrication of High-Quality $SmBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-{\delta}}$ Thin Films by a Modified TFA-MOD Process (수정된 TFA-MOD법에 의한 $SmBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-{\delta}}$ 박막의 제조)

  • We report a successful fabrication of high-quality $SmBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-{\delta}}$ (SmBCO) thin films on $LaAlO_3$(LAO)(100) single crystalline substrates by a modified TFA-MOD method. After the pyrolysis heat treatment of spin-coated films up to $400^{\circ}C$, SmBCO films were fired at various temperatures ranging from 810 to $850^{\circ}C$ in a reduced oxygen atmosphere (10 ppm $O_2$ in Ar). Optimally processed SmBCO films exhibited the zero-resistance temperature ($T_{c,zero}$) of 90.2 K and the critical current density ($J_c$) of $0.8\;MA/cm^2$ at 77K in self-field. Compared with the $J_c$ values (normally, > $2\;MA/cm^2$ at 77 K) of MOD-TFA processed YBCO films, rather depressed $J_c$ values in SmBCO films are most probably attributed to the existence of ${\alpha}$-axis oriented grains.

  • The purity of CeO$_2$, Sm$_2$O$^{3+}$ and La2O$^{3+}$ have been determinated by separating the impurity of rare earth-elements in those oxides with anion exchange resin and measuring the absorbance of the separated element with MTB. 1 ml of the mixture solution containing each 1 mg/ml of Y$^{3+}$, Yb$^{3+}$, Eu$^{3+}$, Sm$^{3+}$, Nd$^{3+}$, Pr$^{3+}$, Ce$^{4+}$and La$^{3+}$ is loaded in top layer of anion exchange resin column, Amberlite CG400 and separated with the mixture solution of the various concentration of methyl alcohol and nitric acid as an eluent. Using the result, the impure rare earth elements in pure CeO$_2$, Sm$_2$O$^{3+}$ and La$_2$O$^{3+}$ are determinated.

  • The microwave dielectric properties and microstructures of the Complex Perovskite (1-x)$(Li_{1/2}Sm_{1/2})TiO_3-x (Na_{1/2}Sm_{1/2})TiO_3$(LNST) system were investigated using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). LNST had not only the antiphase tilting of oxygen octahedron but also the inphase tilting of oxygen octahedron and the antiparallel shift of cations. Also, when $0.0{\leq}x{\leq}0.4$, LNST had the vacancy ordering of A-sites because of the evaporation of Li ions. From the observation of the microstructure, abnormal grain growth phenomena were observed over the whole range of x. The temperature coefficient of resonant frequency ($T_{cf}$) of the $({Li_{1/2}}^{+1}{Sm_{1/2}}^{+3})TiO_3$(LST) system has a large negative value ($-220ppm/^{\circ}C$) but the $({Na_{1/2}}^{+1}{Sm_{1/2}}^{+3})TiO_3$(NST) system which substituted $Na^{+1}$ has a large positive value ($+173ppm/^{\circ}C$). The dielectric properties of ${\varepsilon}_r=103,\;Q*f_{0}=3,700GHz$ and $T_{cf}=+50ppm/^{\circ}C$ at 4GHz were obtained when x =0.4.

  • Dispersion stability of the $Sm_xCe_{1-x}O_{2-2/x}$ nanoparticles, which was produced by hydrothermal process, was studied in aqueous suspension using ESA (Eletrokinetic Sonic Amplitude). The average particle size of the synthesized $Sm_xCe_{1-x}O_{2-2/x}$ at nanoparticles was about $5{\pm}2nm$. The dispersion and rheological behavior of the $Sm_xCe_{1-x}O_{2-2/x}$ nanoparticles aqueous suspension was investigated using $NH_4OH\;and\;HNO_3$ as a disperse agent. The colloidal stability of aqueous suspensions with $Sm_xCe_{1-x}O_{2-2/x}$ nanoparticles at different pH values has been investigated by means of zeta potential, average particle size, and the distribution of synthesized $Sm_xCe_{1-x}O_{2-2/x}$ nanoparticles. The isoelectric point of the $Sm_xCe_{1-x}O_{2-2/x}$ nanoparticles was at pH around 11 and the value of zeta potential was at its maximum near pH 6.5.

  • A novel ligand N,N'-(2,6-pyridinedicarbonyl)bis[N-(carboxymethyl)] (L1) was designed and synthesized. Four co-luminescence groups of Sm-La-pyridyl carboxylic acids systems were researched, which are $K_4Sm_{(1-x)}-La_x(L_1)Cl_3{\cdot}y_1H_2O$, $K_4Sm_{(1-x)}La_x(L_2)Cl_3{\cdot}y_2H_2O$, $K_6Sm_{2(1-x)}La_{2x}(L_3)Cl_6{\cdot}y_3H_2O$, $K_4Sm_{(1-x)}La_x(L_4)Cl_3{\cdot}y_4H_2O$. The results indicated the addition of La(III) could sensitize the luminescence of Sm(III) obviously in a certain range, enhancing emission intensity of Sm-pyridyl carboxylic acids relative to the undoped ones. The optimal mole percentages of La(III) in the mixed ions for $L_1$, $L_2$, $L_3$, $L_4$ were confirmed to be 0.6, 0.5, 0.3, 0.6, respectively. The mechanism of the fluorescence enhancement effect was discussed in detail. Furthermore, the binding interaction of $K_4Sm_{0.4}La_{0.6}(L_4)Cl_3{\cdot}5H_2O$ with bovine serum albumin (BSA) have been investigated due to its potential biological activity. The binding site number n was equal to 1.0 and binding constant $K_a$ was about $2.5{\times}10^5\;L{\cdot}mol^{-1}$.

  • These days, according to surprising development of communication enterprises, every soft of devices is getting smaller and cheaper. Among these Devices, microwave dielectric ceramics are studied and progressed briskly as the materials of dielectric resonator. Dielectric properties of BaO-S $M_{2}$ $O_{3}$-Ti $O_{2}$, one of the BaO Lnsub 2/ $O_{3}$-Ti $O_{2}$ (Ln=La, Sm, Nd, Pr…) system, synthesized by solid-reaction and coprecipitation method were investigated. Disk-type samples were sintered at 1250-1400.deg. C for 2hrs. As a result, single phase was not synthesized in both method. First created the second phase of S $M_{2}$ $Ti_{2}$ $O_{7}$, and then the last phase of $Ba_{3.75}$S $m_{9.5}$ $Ti_{18}$ $O_{54}$, Ti $O_{2}$, and $Ba_{2}$ $Ti_{9}$ $O_{20}$. When the sample was sintered at 1280.deg. C (in solid reaction method) and at 1310.deg. C (in coprecipitation method), it obtained highest dielectric constant (72.96 and 71.70, respectively) and high Q value. Above that temperature, dielectric constant and Q value decreased because of lattice defect according to oxygen vacancies........

Physical and Chemical Properties of (Sr,Mg)FeO3-y System Heat-treated in N2 (N2 분위기에서 열처리한 (Sr,Mg)FeO3-y계의 물리 및 화학적 성질)

  • The perovskite solid solutions of the $Sr_{1-x}Mg_xFe{^{3+}}_{1-{\tau}}Fe{^{4+}}_{\tau}O_{3-y}$ system (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) were synthesized in $N_2$ at $1,150^{\circ}C$. X-ray powder diffraction study assured that all the four samples had cubic symmetries(SM-0: $3.865{\AA}$, SM-1: $3.849{\AA}$, SM-2: $3.833{\AA}$, and SM-3: $3.820{\AA}$) and that the lattice volumes decreased steadily from $57.7{\AA}^3$ to $55.7{\AA}^3$ with x values. The nonstoichiometric chemical formulas were determined by Mohr salt analysis and with the increase of x values the amounts of $Fe^{4+}$ ion and oxygen were decreased simultaneously. Thermal analysis showed that SM-0 started to lose its oxygen at $450^{\circ}C$ and SM-1, Sm-2, and SM-3 began to lose their oxygen at around $350{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. SM-0 showed almost reversible weight change in the cooling process. All the samples exhibited semiconducting behaviors in the temperature range of $10{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. Conductivities of the 4 samples were decreased in the order of SM-0, SM-1, SM-2, and SM-3 at constant temperature. The activation energies of the conductions were in the range of 0.176 eV~0.244 eV.
