Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Magnetic Properties of $RbV_2SeO_7$ as Compared with $KV_2SeO_7$

  • Crystalline compound RbV2SeO7, a Rb analogue of KV2SeO7, was synthesized from a hydrothermal reaction of V2O5, V2O3, SeO2, and Rb2CO3 in the mole ratio 3: 1: 15: 6 (in millimoles) at 230℃. RbV2SeO7 crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group Pnma (No. 62) with a=18.444(8), b=5.415(3), c=7.070(4) Å, Z=8. The two structures of KV2SeO7 and RbV2SeO7 are almost the same except that bond lengths in the latter are slightly longer than in the former. The magnetic susceptibility measurement for RbV2SeO7 in the temperature range 4-300 K showed an antiferromagnetic ordering with TN=45 K, higher than that for KV2SeO7 of 27 K. The origin of the magnetic coupling and the different ordering temperatures in the two phases are discussed in relation to the crystal structures.

Enhancing the Thermoelectric Properties of Layered Bi2O2Q (Q = S, Se): the Effect of Mixed Chalcogen Net

  • The layered semiconductors $Bi_2O_2Q$ (Q = S, Se) consists of $Bi_2O_2$ layers sandwiched by Q square nets. On the basis of density functional theory calculations, we examined the thermoelectric properties of $Bi_2O_2S$, $Bi_2O_2Se$ as well as hypothetical structure of $Bi_2O_2$($S_{0.5}Se_{0.5}$) consisting of mixed chalcogen nets. The thermoelectric power factor of $Bi_2O_2S_{0.5}Se_{0.5}$ is much greater than those of $Bi_2O_2S$ and $Bi_2O_2Se$, suggesting that introducing mixed chalcogen net in $Bi_2O_2Q$ is a possible way of enhancing the thermoelectric property of $Bi_2O_2Q$.

Inhibitory effect of SeO2 on cell growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (SeO2의 메티실린-내성 황색포도상구균에 대한 생육 억제 효과)

  • This study was carried out to determine the antibacterial activity of $SeO_2$ against pathogenic bacteria, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Using the disc diffusion method, $SeO_2$ showed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria used in this study. Coccus-form bacteria showed much susceptible to $SeO_2$, compared to bacillus-form bacteria. Compared to antibiotics-susceptible S. aureus, antibiotics used in this study showed lower antibacterial activity against MRSA. As $200-500{\mu}g/disc$ of $SeO_2$ was applied, diameters of clear zone for S. aureus and MRSA were 20-32.7 mm and 13.5-17.9 mm, respectively. For MRSA, minimal inhibitory concentration of $SeO_2$ was $40{\mu}g/ml$. When $SeO_2$ was added in culture broth, cell growth of MRSA was inhibited. These results will be applied to determine antibacterial mechanism of MRSA and other pathogenic microorganisms.

Ultrasonic Synthesis of CoSe2-Graphene-TiO2 Ternary Composites for High Photocatalytic Degradation Performance

  • In this study, we examined the photo-degradation efficiency of $CoSe_2$-Graphene-$TiO_2$ ($CoSe_2-G-TiO_2$) nanocomposites under visible light irradiation using rhodamine B (RhB) as standard dye. $CoSe_2-G-TiO_2$ nanocomposites were synthesized by ultrasonication and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopic analysis and UV-Vis absorbance spectra analysis. Our results show that the $CoSe_2-G-TiO_2$ nanocomposite exhibited significant photo degradation efficiency compared to pure $TiO_2$ and $CoSe_2-G$, approximately 85.2% of the rhodamine (Rh B) degraded after 2.5 h. It is concluded that the $CoSe_2-G-TiO_2$ nanocomposite is a promising candidate for use in dye pollutants.

Sonochemical Synthesis and Sonocatalysis Performance Behavior of Ag2Se and Ag2Se/TiO2 Nanocomposites

  • In this study, novel $Ag_2Se$ sensitized $TiO_2$ nanocomposites were prepared by facile sonochemical assisted synthesis method. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2 adsorption BET analysis. The as-prepared $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposites simultaneously possessed great adsorptivity for organic dyes and efficient charge separation properties. In the decolorization of rhodamine B, a significant enhancement in the reaction rate was observed for the $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposite compared to the cases of using pure P25 or $TiO_2$. The sonocatalysis activity was higher due to the greater formation of reactive radicals, as well as to the increase of the active surface area of the $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposite.

Diffraction Efficiency Change in PVA/AA Photopolymer Films by SeO2 and TiO2 Nano Particle Addition (PVA/AA계 광 고분자 필름의 SeO2 및 TiO2 나노 입자 첨가에 의한 회절 효율 변화)

  • Photopolymer is a material for recording three dimensional holograms containing photo information. Photopolymer has been found to be a proper material due to many advantages such as high DE value, easy processing, and low price. Compositions of PVA, monomer, initiater and photosensitizer were determined by previous experiments and the compositions of $SeO_2$ and $TiO_2$ were considered as variable to find out the effects of $TiO_2$ on DE. The DE values were constant for the varying compositions of $TiO_2$ (0.1 mg~1.0 mg). In other words, $TiO_2$ is not directly effective on the DE values. Composition change experiments from $SeO_2$ 0.1 mg, $TiO_2$ 0.9 mg to $SeO_2$ 0.9 mg, $TiO_2$ 0.1 showed a maximum DE value of 73.75% at a component of $SeO_2$ 0.8 mg, $TiO_2$ 0.2 mg. It seemed that regardless of the amount of $TiO_2$, increasing the amount of $SeO_2$ gently increases DE`s. If nano particles are heavily added, transparent films could not be made due to the separation of particles by the solubility decrease. Photopolymer films could be made with high DE values for an extensive angle range if $TiO_2$ additions were kept minimum and $SeO_2$ additions were kept maximum.

Antifungal Activity of SeO2 against Pathogenic Fungus Candida albicans (SeO2의 병원성 진균 Candida albicans에 대한 항균 활성)

  • This study was carried out to determine the antifungal activity of $SeO_2$ against pathogenic fungus, Candida albicans. Concentration-dependent Inhibitory activity of $SeO_2$ against C. albicans was shown. When $400{\mu}g/disc$ of $SeO_2$ was tested, the inhibition size ranged from 20.7 to 26.8 mm (avg. 23.4 mm). MIC values of $SeO_2$ against cell growth of C. albicans ranged from 50 to $100{\mu}g/mL$ (avg. $70{\mu}g/mL$). These results could be applied to antibiotics-resistant C. albicans and other pathogenic fungi.

Preparation of Ag2Se-Graphene-TiO2 Nanocomposite and its Photocatalytic Degradation (Rh B)

  • Here, utilizing rhodamine B (RhB) as standard color dye, we examined the photo degradation proficiency of $Ag_2Se-Graphene-TiO_2$ nanocomposites under visible light irradiation; samples were prepared by ultrasonication techniques and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopic investigation and UV-Vis absorbance spectra examination. Our outcomes demonstrate that the $Ag_2Se-G-TiO_2$ nanocomposite showed significant photodegradation efficiency as compared with those of $TiO_2-G$ and $Ag_2Se-G$, with around 85.2% of Rhodamine B (RhB) degraded after 180 min. It is concluded that the $Ag_2Se-G-TiO_2$ nanocomposite is a competent candidate for dye pollutants.

Photoluminescence of ZnGa2O4-xMx:Mn2+ (M=S, Se) Thin Films

  • Mn-doped $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin film phosphors have been grown using a pulsed laser deposition technique under various growth conditions. The structural characterization carr~ed out on a series of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) films grown on MgO(l00) substrates usmg Zn-rich ceramic targets. Oxygen pressure was varied from 50 to 200 mTorr and Zn/Ga ratio was the function of oxygen pressure. XRD patterns showed that the lattice constants of the $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin film decrease with the substitution of sulfur and selenium for the oxygen in the $ZnGa_2O_4$. Measurements of photoluminescence (PL) properties of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin films have indicated that MgO(100) is one of the most promised substrates for the growth of high quality $ZnGa_2O_{4-x}M_{x}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin films. In particular, the incorporation of Sulfur or Selenium into $ZnGa_2O_4$ lattice could induce a remarkable increase in the intensity of PL. The increasing of green emission intensity was observed with $ZnGa_2O_{3.925}Se_{0.075}:$Mn^{2+}$ and $ZnGa_2O_{3.925}S_{0.05}$:$Mn^{2+}$ films, whose brightness was increased by a factor of 3.1 and 1.4 in comparison with that of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ films, respectively. These phosphors may promise for application to the flat panel displays.
