Ozone ($O_3$) is a main component of photochemical oxidants, and a phytotoxic anthropogenic air pollutant. In North America and Europe, the current concentration of $O_3$ has been shown to have significant adverse effects on vegetation. In this review, we summarize the experimental studies on the effects of $O_3$ on the growth and photosynthetic activity of Japanese forest tree species to understand the present knowledge and provide sound basis for future research toward the assessment of $O_3$ impacts on Japanese forest ecosystem. Since the 1990s, several Japanese researchers have conducted the experimental studies on the effects of ambient levels of $O_3$ on growth and physiological functions such as net photosynthesis of Japanese forest tree species. Although the sensitivity to $O_3$ of whole-plant growth is quite different among the species, it was suggested that the current ambient levels of $O_3$ in Japan are high enough to adversely affect growth and photosynthetic activity of Japanese forest tree species classified into high $O_3$ sensitivity group such as Japanese beech. The N load to soil has been shown to reduce the sensitivity to $O_3$ of Japanese larch and increase that of Japanese beech. To establish the critical level of $O_3$ for protecting Japanese forest tree species, therefore, it is necessary to take into account the N deposition from the atmosphere. There is little information on the combined effects of $O_3$ and other environmental factors such as elevated $CO_2$ and drought on growth and physiological functions of Japanese forest tree species. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the experimental study and accumulate the information on the combined effects of $O_3$ and any other abiotic environmental factors on Japanese forest tree species.
This study was conducted to find out the influence of drought stress on physiological responses of Synurus deltoides. Drought stress was induced by withholding water for 25 days. Leaf water potentials were decreased of both predawn (${\Psi}_{pd}$) and mid-day (${\Psi}_{mid}$) with increasing drought stress, but water saturation dificit (WSD) was 7 times increased. ${\Psi}_{pd}-{\Psi}_{mid}$ showed the significant difference of 0.22~0.18 MPa in stressed before 10 days, and nonsignificant as treatment time became longer. A strong reduction of stomatal conductance ($gH_2O$) and stomatal transpiration rate (E) were observed after 15 days of drought stress Significant reductions of net apparent quantum yield (${\Phi}$) and maximum photosynthesis rate ($Pn_{max}$) were observed after 20 days of drought stress; However, water use efficiency (WUE) was shown the opposite trend. This implies that decrease of photosynthesis rate may be due to an inability to regulate water and $CO_2$ exchanged through the stomata. From JIP analysis, flux ratios (${\Psi}_O$ and ${\Phi}_{EO}$) and performance index on absorption basis ($PI_{ABS}$) were dramatically decreased withholding water after 15 days, which reflects the relative reduction of photosystem II activity. The leaf of S. deltoides showed osmotic adjustment of -0.35 MPa at full turgor and -0.40 MPa at zero turgor, and also cell-wall elastic adjustment of 9.4 MPa, indicating that S. deltoides tolerate drought stress through osmotic adjustment and cell-wall elastic adjustment. The degree of change in water relations parameters such as Vo/DW, Vt/DW decreased with increasing drought stress. This result showed that S. deltoides was exhibited a strong reduction of photosynthetic activity to approximately -0.93 MPa of predawn leaf water potential, and both of osmotic adjustment and cell-wall elastic adjustment in drought stress condition appears to be an important adaptation for restoration in this species.

Physiological and biochemical changes of five species of genus Quercus exposed to ozone fumigation were investigated to assess their tolerance against ozone toxicity. At the end of 150 ppb ozone fumigation, chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic characteristics, malondialdehyde(MDA) and antioxidative enzyme activities were measured in the leaves of five Quercus species(Quercus acutissima, Q. aliena, Q. palustris, Q. serrata, and Q. variabilis). Chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, net photosynthesis and carboxylation efficiency decreased after ozone treatment, indicating that $O_3$-exposed plants underwent physiological inhibition. The reduction rate of total chlorophyll contents and carboxylation efficiency were respectively 15% and 34% for Q. aliena and 38% and 62% for Q. variabilis. The amount of MDA increased with the highest increase rate of 140% in Q. acutissima which also showed the highest increase rate(60%) of superoxide dismutase(SOD). Ascorbate peroxidase(APX) activity increased in Q. variabilis, Q. serrata and Q. acutissima by ozone treatment. Based on our results, ozone tolerance of the five Quercus species was ranked as Q. aliena>Q. palustris>Q. serrata>Q. variabilis>Q. acutissima. We concluded that chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis, MDA content and antioxidative enzymes were the important physiological markers for tolerance against ozone stress, which were closely related with one another.
The effects of various levels of Al concentration on growth, nutrient status and net photosynthetic rate of 2-year-old Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. seedlings grown in a nutrient culture solution were investigated. Al concentrations were added as aluminum chloride($AlCl_3$) at 0(control), 10, 30 and 60ppm to the nutrient culture solution. The nutrient culture solution was maintained at pH 4.0 by adding HCl or NaOH solution. The seedlings were transplanted into the nutrient culture solution and grown in a greenhouse for 90 days from May 8 to August 6, 1996. The treatment above 10ppm of Al concentrations induced a significant reduction on the dry weight growth of the seedlings. The relative growth rate(RGR), net assimilation rate(NAR) and net photosynthetic rate of the seedlings were reduced with increasing of Al concentrations in the nutrient culture solutions. This result suggests that reductions in the RGR and NAR of the seedlings were mainly due to the inhibition of net photosynthesis. In addition, the increase of Al concentrations in a nutrient culture solution decreased the concentration of essential mineral elements such as Ca and Mg in the needle of the seedlings. However, the concentrations of Al of each plant organ increased in the treatment above 10ppm of Al concentrations in the nutrient culture solutions. This result suggests that the increased Al concentration in the belowground part resulted from the decreased concentration of essential mineral elements in the aboveground part of the seedlings.
Salicylic acid (SA), a phenolic compound, plays a pivotal role in regulating a wide range of physiological and metabolic processes in plants such as antioxidant cellular defense, photosynthesis, and biotic and abiotic stress responses during the growth and development. We examined the effect of exogenous SA application (100 mg·L-1) on the growth, yield, photosynthetic characteristics, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activity of chili pepper plants under high temperature and drought stress conditions. SA treatment induced increases of net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (Tr) under the stress condition with the highest level after the third treatment. The contents of malondialdehyde and H2O2 were significantly lower in the third treatment of SA compared to the control. The activity of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, increased in treated plants by up to 247, 318, 55 and 54%, respectively compared to the nontreated control. There was no significant difference in the growth characteristics between SA-treated and nontreated plants, while the SA treatment increased marketable yield (kg/10a) by about 15% compared to the nontreated control. Taken together, these results suggest that foliar application of SA alleviates physiological damages caused by the combination of drought and heat stress, and enhances the photosynthetic capacity and antioxidant enzyme activities, thereby improving tolerance to a combination of water deficit and heat stress in chili pepper plants.
The dark respiration, photosynthesis($CO_2$ refixation), $CO_2$ balance and chlorophyll content of 1st-year conelets and 2nd-year cones of Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis S.et.Z.) were investigated after pollination up to the end of maturation. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The growth of 1st-year conelet was 3.6cm in length. 2.4cm in diameter and 3.058 in dry weighs during the first year. The growth of 2nd-year mature cone was 13.5cm in length, 9.3cm in diameter and 141.0g in dry weight in the late of 2nd-year. 2. The refixation of carbon dioxide released from a cone by the dark respiration was less than 50 percent at light saturation through the growing period. The refixation of carbon dioxide released by dark respiration for one year was 7.3 percent in 1st-year conelets and 8.7 percent in 2nd-year cones. 3. The dark respiration rate of cones by increasing temperature was rapidly increased with increasing temperature up to $25^{\circ}C$. The dark respiration rate of cones was much higher in non-growing season than that in growing season at the same temperature. 4. The rates of dark respiration and $CO_2$ refixation, based on the dry weight, were much higher in 1st-year conelet than that in 2nd-year cone. 5. The $CO_2$ balance for a cone was negative from pollination to the end of maturation. The net dark respiration loss for a cone was 7.23g $CO_2$/year in 1st-year conelet and 164.8g $CO_2$/year in 2nd-year cone. 6. The respiratory loss efficiency for a cone(=$CH_2O$ weight calculated by net dark respiration/dry weight of cone) for one year was 1.61 in 1st-year conelet and 0.81 in 2nd-year cone for one year. 7. The total chlorophyll content of surface scale of the cone was lower than 2mg/g dw through the growing period, and chl. a/b ratio was 2 to 3.

Salvia miltiorrhiza has been used for treating heart and liver disease. In the present study, the influences of temperature on photosynthetical capacity of S. miltiorrhiza under controlled cultivation environment using growth chamber were investigated because of providing information about growth and secondary metabolite synthesis. And effect of harvesting time on growth properties and constituents such as salvianolic acid B, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I, tanshinone IIA were evaluated. Maximum photosynthesis rate ($5.102{\mu}mol\;CO2/m2/s$) and net apparent quantum yield ($0.147{\mu}mol\;CO2/m2/s$), stomatal conductance (0.035 mmol/m2/s) and water use efficiency ($7.108{\mu}mol\;CO2/mmol\;H2O$) was highest at $20^{\circ}C$. Results of chlorophyll fluorescence showed that elevated temperature had contributed to reduce a quantum yield and electron flux in photosystem. This result demonstrated that favorable temperature condition was determined at $20^{\circ}C$. Contents of salvianolic acid B, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I and tanshinone IIA was highest in root sample harvested at 20 March, whereas growth and yield of S. miltiorrhiza had no significant differences with harvesting time. Therefore, this study shows that temperature play an important role in photosynthetic activity and harvesting time have influence upon accumulation of constituents in root of S. miltiorrhiza.
The effects of Al and Mn concentration on dry weight growth, nutrient status and gas exchange rates of 2-Year-old Japanese red pine(Pinus densiflora) seedlings grown in a nutrient culture solution were investigated. Al was added as aluminum chloride at 0, 10, 30 or 60ppm, and Mn was added as manganese chloride at 0, 30 or 60ppm to the nutrient culture solution. The pH of the solution was maintained at 4.0 by adding HCl or NaOH solution. The seedlings were transplanted into the nutrient culture solution, then they were grown in a greenhouse for 90 days. The interactive effects of Al and Mn on the dry weight growth of the seedlings were not significant. There were a main effect of Al or Mn on the dry weight growth and element concentrations of the seedlings. The treatment with Al of ${\geq}10ppm$ or that with Mn of 60ppm induced a significant reduction in the dry weight growth, which indicates that the effect of Al is stronger than that of Mn. The chlorophyll content of needles was not affected by Al treatment, but was significantly reduced by treatment with Mn of 60ppm. Furthermore, the treatment with Al of 60ppm or that with Mn of ${\geq}30ppm$ caused a significant reduction in the dark respiration rate of the roots. The net photosynthetic rate of the seedlings reduced with increasing the concentration of Al or Mn in the nutrient culture solution, which suggests that Al or Mn induced reductions in the relative growth rate(RGR) and net assimilation rate(NAR) of the seedlings were mainly due to the decrease of net photosynthesis.
We investigated the effects of pollutants on two pine species (Pinus koraiensis and Pinus rigida) in an industrial region, using a physiological approach. We measured the growth and physiological parameters (photosynthetic activity and chemical contents) of the pine trees in relation to environmental pollutants. The concentrations of manganese (Mn), fluorine (F) and chlorine (CI) in needles of two pine species at the damaged site were significantly higher than those at the control site, and concentrations of essential elements (P) and chlorophyll in needles at the damaged site were significantly lower than at the control site. The light-saturated net photosynthesis $(P_{sat})$, apparent quantum yield $(\Phi)$, carboxylation efficiency (CE) of both pines at the damaged site were significantly lower than those at the control site. The length of shoots and survivorship of needles of two pines at the damaged site were significantly lower than those at the control site. Especially, at damaged site, growth of shoots and needle longevity of P. koraiensis are larger than those of P. rigida.
The purpose of this study was to describe the photosynthetic features of Prunus maximowiczii and Prunus serrulate Lindl. var. pubescens (Makino) Nakai in response to drought stress. Specifically, we studied the effects of drought on photosynthetic ability and photosystem II activity. Drought stress (DS) was induced by cutting the water supply for 30 days. DS decreased the moisture contents in the soil, and between the 10th and 12th days of DS, both species had 10% or less of x., After the 15th day of DS, it was less than 5%, which is a condition for disease to start. We observed a remarkable decrease of maximum photosynthesis rate starting from 10th day of DS; the light compensation point was also remarkable. Dark respiration and net apparent quantum yield decreased significantly on the 15th day of DS, and then increased on the 20th day. In addition, the stomatal transpiration rate of P. maximowiczii decreased significantly on the15th day of DS, and then increased on the 20th day. Water use efficiency increased on the 15th day of DS, and then decreased on the 20th day. The stomatal transpiration rate of P. serrulate decreased significantly on the 20th day of DS, and then increased afterward, while its water use efficiency increased on the 20th day of DS, and then decreased afterward. These results indicate that the closure of stoma prevented water loss, resulting in a temporary increase of water use efficiency. Chlorophyll fluorescence analysis detected remarkable decreases in the functional index (PIABS) and energy transfer efficiency in P. maximowiczii after the 15th day of DS. Meanwhile, photosystem II activity decreased in P. serrulate after 20 days of DS. In addition, Ts-Ta, PIABS, DIO/RC, ETO/RC followed similar trends as those of the soil moisture content and photosynthetic properties, indicating that they can be used as useful variables in predicting DS in trees.
