Water Gas Shift Reaction Using the Commercial Catalyst Pellets from the Gases by Waste Plastic Gasification (폐플라스틱 가스화에 의한 가스로부터 상용 촉매 펠릿을 이용한 수성가스 전환 반응)

  • The water gas shift reaction was carried out using the commercial catalyst pellet and the simulated gases expected to occur from waste plastic gasification. In the water gas shift reaction, the high temperature shift reaction and the low temperature shift reaction were continuously performed with CO:H2O ratio of 1:2, 1:2.5, and 1:3, and the CO conversion and H2 increase rate were evaluated. The H2 increase rate increased in order to CO:H2O ratio of 1:3 > CO:H2O ratio of 1:2.5 > CO:H2O ratio of 1:2. The CO conversion showed a high value of more than 97% at each CO:H2O ratio. The water gas shift reaction at a CO:H2O ratio of 1:3 showed the highest H2 increase rate and CO conversion.

Oxidative Desulfurization of Marine Diesel Using Keggin Type Heteropoly Acid Catalysts (Keggin형 헤테로폴리산 촉매를 이용한 선박용 경유의 산화 탈황)

  • Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) has received much attention in recent years because refractory sulfur compounds such as dibenzothiophenes can be oxidized selectively to their corresponding sulfoxides and sulfones, and these products can be removed by extraction and adsorption. In this work, The oxidative desulfurization of marine diesel fuel was performed in a batch reactor with hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) in the presence of various supported heteropoly acid catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, XRF, XPS and nitrogen adsorption isotherm techniques. Based on the sulfur removal efficiency of promising silica supported heteropoly acid catalysts, the ranking of catalytic activity was: $30\;H_3PW_{12}/SiO_2$ > $30\;H_3PMo_{12}/SiO_2$ > $30\;H_4SiW_{12}/SiO_2$, which appears to be related with their intrinsic acid strength. The $30\;H_3PW_{12}/SiO_2$ catalyst showed the highest initial sulfur removal efficiency of about 66% under reaction conditions of $30^{\circ}C$, $0.025g\;mL^{-1}$ (cat./oil), 1 h reaction time. However, through the recycle test of the $H_3PW_{12}/SiO_2$ catalyst, significant deactivation was observed, which was attributed to the elution of the active component $H_3PW_{12}$. By introducing cesium cation ($Cs^+$) into the $H_3PW_{12}/SiO_2$ catalyst, the stability of the catalyst was improved with changing the solubility, and the $Cs^+$ ion exchanged catalyst could be recycled for at least five times without severe elution.

  • The extracellular amylase production by Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD-l in amylase production media and its characteristics were investigated. The amylase production was highest in the medium composed of 0.2% soluble starch, 1.0% Bacto-peptone, 0.3% beef extract, 0.3% yeast extract, 0.5% NaCl, 0.3% $K_2HPO_4$, 0.1% $KH_2PO_4$, 0.012% $CaCl_2$.$2H_2O$, 0.005% $MnSO_4$.$H_2O$, and 0.03% $MgSO_4$.$7H_2O$. The amylase activity was inhibited by 50mM EDT A. The enzyme was optimally active from pH 6.5 to 7.0 at $55^{\circ}C$, The specific activity of the enzyme in the ethanol precipitate was 2.01 units/mg, and the Km value was approxi-mately 0.8 mg/ml.

High Temperature Corrosion in Carbon-Rich Gases

  • Common methods for large scale hydrogen production, such as steam reforming and coal gasification, also involve production of carbonaceous gases. It is therefore necessary to handle process gas streams involving various mixtures of hydrocarbons, $H_2$, $H_2O$, CO and $CO_2$ at moderate to high temperatures. These gases pose a variety of corrosion threats to the alloys used in plant construction. Carbon is a particularly aggressive corrodent, leading to carburisation and, at high carbon activities, to metal dusting. The behaviour of commercial heat resisting alloys 602CA and 800, together with that of 304 stainless steel, was studied during thermal cycling in $CO/CO_2$ at $650-750^{\circ}C$, and also in $CO/H_2/H_2O$ at $680^{\circ}C$. Thermal cycling caused repeated scale separation, which accelerated chromium depletion from the alloy subsurface regions. The $CO/H_2/H_2O$ gas, with $a_C=2.9$ and $p(O_2)=5\times10^{-23}$ atm, caused relatively rapid metal dusting, accompanied by some internal carburisation. In contrast, the $CO/CO_2$ gas, with $a_C=7$ and $p(O_2)=10^{-23}-10^{-24}$ atm caused internal precipitation in all three alloys, but no dusting. Inward diffusion of oxygen led to in situ oxidation of internal carbides. The very different reaction morphologies produced by the two gas mixtures are discussed in terms of competing gas-alloy reaction steps.

Ceruloplasmin Gene Expression in U-937 Cells exposed to ${\gamma}$-Irradiation and $H_2$O_2 (U-937 세포에서 방사선 및 $H_2$O_2$에 의한 ceruloplasmin의 mRNA 유전자 발현)

  • In human U-937 cell exposed to ${\gamma}$-irradiation and $H_2O$$_2$, the level of mRNA efrpression in ceruloplasmin gene was measured by using comparative RT.PCR (reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction). At the normal growth condition, the level of ceruloplasmin transcript was estimated as 8.2% and 0.0068% of hprt (hypoxantine phosphoribosyl transferase) transcript and of $\beta$-actin transcript, respectively. In U-937 cells exposed to a dose of 100 rad ${\gamma}$-irradiation, the level of ceruloplasmin transcript was increased about 2.7 and 1.6 fold compared to un-treated cell by using compensation with the levels of hprt and $\beta$-actin transcript. By contrast, the expression of ceruloplasmin gene in U-937 cells exposed to $H_2O$$_2$(50 $\mu$M, 24 h), was shown no significant difference compared to un-treated cell. These results indicated that the expression system of ceruloplasmin gene may react only some specific oxygen species, such as reactive oxygen species induced by ${\gamma}$-irradiation.

Color Removal Efficiency for the Effluent of Activated Sludge Process for Pig Wastewater by TiO$_2$ Treatment System (TiO$_2$를 이용한 양돈장의 활성오니처리방류수의 탈색처리에 관한 연구)

  • These experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficiency of the color removal treatment system of pig wastewater by $TiO_2$. The results obtained are summarized as follow : 1 The color removal efficiency of effluent of activated sludge process by $TiO_2$ level were 59.7 and 52.5% for 1.0 and 2.0g/$\ell$ at 360 minute of operation time, respectively. 2. The color of pig wastewater was changed from 655 color unit(cu) to 146cu of the wastewater treatment of pH 5 at 300 minute of operation time. 3. The $H_2O_2$ level for color removal showed at 200mg/$\ell$ and in that level, the color removal efficiency was 52.5%. 4. The color removal efficiency of 365nm UV intensity was 29.4%, but 254nm of UV intensity was higher(50.1%) than 365nm for color removal.

Effect of MgO and NH4OH on Formation of 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·3H2O Whiskers (침상형 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·3H2O 형성에 관한 MgO와 NH4OH 영향)

  • Magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate whiskers ($5Mg(OH)_2{\cdot}MgSO_4{\cdot}3H_2O$, abbreviated 513 MHSH) were prepared using hydrothermal reaction with magnesium oxide (MgO) and magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$) as the starting materials. The effects of the molar ratio of $MgSO_4$/MgO and amount of $NH_4OH$ were studied. As a result, 513 MHSH whiskers co-existed with hexagonal plate $Mg(OH)_2$ at low concentration of $SO_4^{2-}$. The molar ratio of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$/MgO was 7:1, uniform 513 MHSH whiskers were formed without impurity such as $Mg(OH)_2$. Appropriate amount of $NH_4OH$ has affected to formation of high quality MHSH. Their morphologies and structures were determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA).

Cationic Iridium(I) Complex of Ethyl Cinnamate and Hydrogenation of Unsaturated Esters with Iridium(I)-Perchlorato Complex

  • Reaction of $Ir(ClO_4)(CO)(PPh_3)_2$ with trans-$C_6H_5CH$ = $CHCO_2C_2H_5$ produces a new cationic iridium(I) complex, [Ir (trans-$C_6H_5CH$ = $CHCO_2C_2H_5)(CO)(PPh_3)_2]ClO_4$ where trans-$C_6H_5CH$ = $CHCO_2C_2H_5$ seems to be coordinated through the carbonyl oxygen rather than through the $\pi$-system of the olefinic group according to the spectral data. It has been found that Ir$(ClO_4)(CO)(PPh_3)_2$ catalyzes the hydrogenation of $CH_2$ = $CHCO_2C_2H_5$, trans-$CH_3CH$ = $CHCO_2C_2H_5$ and trans-$C_6H_5CH$ = $CHCO_2C_2H_5$ to $CH_3CH_2CO_2C_2H_5$, $CH_3CH_2CH_2CO_2C_2H_5$ and $C_6H_5CH_2CH_2CO_2C_2H_5$, respectively at room temperature under the atmospheric pressure of hydrogen. The relative rates of the hydrogenation of the unsaturated esters are mostly understood in terms of steric reasons.
