Purified Polysaccharide Activating the Complement System from Leaves of Diospyos kaki L. (감잎(Diospyos kaki L.)으로부터 정제한 보체계 활성화 다당류)

  • Cold and hot water fractions of Diospyros kaki were screened to determine its anti-complementary activity. Flour of Diospyros kaki leaf (250 g) was boiled at $100^{\circ}C$ for 3 h and passed through a membrane of 10 kDa molecular weight (DK-0). DK-0 was precipitated with ethanol and refluxed with methanol to obtain the crude polysaccharide (DKC). DKC-1 was isolated by ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-Toyopearl 650C, and DKC-1c was purified from DKC-1 by size exclusion chromatography on Bio gel P-60. The anti-complementary activities of DKC-1c at $1000\;{\mu}g/mL$ were 85.4 and 61.1% via whole and alternative pathways, respectively. DKC-1c was determined as a neutral polysaccharide composed of glucose (29.0 mol.%), arabinose (24.3 mol.%), and galactose (16.2 mol.%) with the molecular weight of 66.6 kDa. Results of agarose gel immunoelectrophoresis revealed DKC-1c, as a complement activator, cleaved C3 into C3a and C3b via both pathways.

Yearly Trend of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage(SSB) Intake and Nutritional Status by SSB Intake Level in Korean Middle School Students Using the 2007~2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (중학생의 가당음료 섭취량 변화 추이와 가당음료 섭취 수준에 따른 영양상태 평가: 2007~2015 국민건강영양조사를 이용하여)

  • This study examined yearly trend of sugar-sweetened beverage(SSB) intake and compared nutritional status by SSB intake level in middle school students aged 12~14 years(n=2,543) using the data from 2007~2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. SSB included carbonated drinks, sports drinks, and caffeinated drinks contained added sugar. Subjects were classified into three groups by SSB intake level obtained from 24-hour recall method: SSB 1(SSB intake 0 g/d), SSB 2(0 g/d < SSB intake < 50th percentile) and SSB 3(SSB intake ≥ 50th percentile). Result of daily intake of SSB was 76.1±6.2 g/d for boys and 59.5±4.7 g/d for girls and it was increased significantly for boys(p-trend 0.0004) and girls(p-trend 0.0038) by year. The most intakes were carbonated drinks followed by fruit juices and sports drinks for boys and girls. Percentage of daily intake compared to the dietary reference was increased for energy and iron while was decreased for calcium and vitamin C toward SSB 3 group. Ratio of excess intake of energy/fat was increased significantly for boys(p=0.0091) and girls(p<0.0001) toward SSB 3 group. Ratio of calcium deficiency was 86.8~94.9% for boys and girls and it was very high. Therefore, it should be emphasized to reduce SSB intake and drink plain water without added sugar, etc. and milk as a source of calcium for improving nutritional status of middle school students through dietary education and social support.

A Tank Model Application to Soyanggang Dam and Chungju Dam with Snow Accumulation and Snow Melt (적설 및 융설 모의를 포함한 탱크모형의 소양강댐 및 충주댐에 대한 적용)

  • Snow accumulation and snow melt was simulated and included in the computation of the watershed runoff for Soyanggang Dam and Chungju Dam. A modified Tank Model was used for the simulation, which has three serial tanks and a pulse response function. The model parameters were estimated through the global optimization method of Shuffled Complex Evolution-University of Arizona (SCE-UA). A watershed was divided into four zones of elevation. The temperature decrease of the zones was a rate of -0.6$^{\circ}C$/100m. Almost all precipitation from December to February become accumulated as snow, and then the snow melts and runs off from March to April. The average runoff with snow melt was greater than the average runoff without snow melt during the period from March to April. The improved amount from snow melt simulation was about one fifth of the observed one for Soyanggang Dam. The increased amount for Chungju Dam was about one fourth of the observed average runoff during the same period. Although the watershed runoff was simulated including snow melt, it was less than the observed one for both of the dams.

Application of CBM-CFS3 Model to Assess Carbon Stock and Age Class Changes Over Long Term Forest Planning in a Korea's National Forest (산림탄소축적을 고려한 국유림 장기경영계획 수립을 위한 CBM-CFS3 모델의 적용)

  • Forest carbon stock changes in a national forest were assessed by CBM-CFS3 model with different management scenarios to support decision making for a long term forest planning. Management scenarios were composed with 4 different levels of timber harvesting - current harvesting level (scenario1), 30% increment in each period (scenario2), 3 times increment (scenario3), and 5 times increment (scenario4). For each scenarios, changes in total carbon stocks, carbon stocks of each carbon pools, carbon stocks of harvested wood products (HWP) and age class structure were estimated over 100-year planning horizon. The estimated total carbon stock including HWP at the end of final period (100 years) was 433.1 tC/ha under scenario 1, but the age class structure has skewed right to the upper classes, which is not desirable for sustainable forest management. Under the scenario 4, however, the total carbon stock decrease to 385.5 tC/ha and the area of old growth forest show a significant decline. The estimated total carbon stock under scenario 2 and 3 were 411.7 tC/ha and 410.5 tC/ha respectively, and it was able to maintain the initial level of the forest carbon stocks during the planning horizon. Also the age class structures under the scenario 2 and 3 were evenly distributed from class 1 to class 8. Overall, scenario 2 and 3 were the most acceptable forest management options, in terms of carbon stock changes and age class structure.

  • This study is for estimate the amount of water supplied data to get a database for economic plan of water supply system by survey for the amount of water supplied of primary, middle and highschool. For this, 54 of primary school, middle school, high school in 6 cities of Kangwon for 5 years. As a result, average of the amount of water supplied per month is $600.7m^3/mon$ and primary, middle schools are $484.2m^3/mon$ and high schools are $833.8m^3/mon$. Average of the amount of water supplied per class is $27.0m^3/mon/class$ and primary, middle schools are $24.4m^3/mon/class$ and high schools are $32m^3/mon/class$. Average of the amount of water supplied per person per day is 55.8l/c/d and primary school, middle schools are 54.4l/c/d and high schools are 58.6l/c/d.

  • Purpose: We intended to evaluate myocardial oxygen consumption ($MVO_2)$ by applying recirculation correction and modified one-compartment model to have a reference range of $MVO_2$ in normal young population and to reveal the effect of recirculation on time-activity curve (TAC). Materials and Methods: In nine normal male volunteers with mean age of $26.3{\pm}4.0$, $MVO_2$ was estimated with 925 MBq (25mCi) of $^{11}C$-Acetate (Neuroscience Research Institute, Gachon University of Medicine and Science, Incheon, Korea) and PET/CT (Biograph 6, Siemens Medical Solution, Germany). Analysis software such as $MATLAB^{(R)}$ v7.1 (Mathworks, Inc., United States), $Excel^{(R)}$ 2007 (Microsoft, United States), and $SPSS^{(R)}$ v12.0 (Apache Software Foundation, United States) were used. Twenty three frames were of $12{\times}10$, $5{\times}60$, $3{\times}120$, $2{\times}300's$ duration, respectively. The modified one-compartmental model and the recirculation correction method were applied. Statistical analysis was performed by using Test of Normality, ANOVA and Post-Hoc (Scheffe's) analysis, and p-value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: The normal reference ranges of $MVO_2$ were presented as $3.18-4.64\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;ml/g/sec$, $1.91-3.94\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;ml/g/sec$, $4.31-6.40\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;ml/g/sec$, $2.84-4.53\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;ml/g/sec$ and $3.42-5.00\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;ml/g/sec$ in the septum, the inferior wall, the lateral wall, the anterior wall and the entire wall, respectively. In addition, it was noted that the dual exponentiality of the clearance curve is due to the recirculation effect and that the characteristic of the curve is essentially mono-exponential. Conclusion: $^{11}C$-Acetate is a radiotracer worthwhile to assess $MVO_2$. Re-circulated $^{11}C$ can influence TAC of $^{11}C$ in myocadia and so the recirculation correction must be considered when measuring $MVO_2$.

Effect of Glass Frit on the Sintering Behavior and Mechanical Properties of 3Y-ZrO2 (3Y-지르코니아 조성에서 Glass Frit의 첨가량에 따른 소결 거동 및 기계적 특성의 변화)

  • The effect of glass frit on the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of 3 mol% $Y_2O_3$-doped zirconia($3Y-ZrO_2$) have been studied. Up to 30 wt% of glass frit was added to $3Y-ZrO_2$. Sintering was performed in a box furnace up to $1300^{\circ}C$ for specimens with glass frit and $1600^{\circ}C$ for specimens without glass frit in air for 1h. Relative density and mechanical properties were measured to investigate the effect of glass frit. The addition of glass frit enhanced both sintered density and mechanical properties of $3Y-ZrO_2$ which is suitable for dental applications. Maximum sintered density 93.3% of theoretical density was obtained with the specimens containing 30 wt% frit sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$, whereas the optimum amount of frit addition for mechanical properties was determined as 10 wt%. Maximum value of strength, fracture toughness, and Vickers microhardness for specimens with glass frit were 206 MPa, $3.4\;MPa\;m^{1/2}$, and 5.3 GPa, respectively.

Role and Principle of Lowering Storage Temperature : Methane Emission and Microbial Community of Cattle Manure (저온 저장의 역할과 원리: 우분의 메탄 배출과 미생물 군집)

  • Livestock manure is a significant source for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, and a huge amount of GHG emission is generated during its storage. In the present work, lowering temperature was attempted to mitigate methane ($CH_4$) emission from cattle manure (CM) with high solid content. CM was stored for 60 d at $15-35^{\circ}C$ ($5^{\circ}C$ interval). $CH_4$ emission reached $63.6{\pm}3.6kg\;CO_2\;eq./ton\;CM$ at $35^{\circ}C$, which was reduced to $51.6{\pm}1.8$, $24.1{\pm}4.4$, $14.9{\pm}0.5$, and $3.7{\pm}0.1kg\;CO_2\;eq./ton\;CM$ at 30, 25, 20, and $15^{\circ}C$, respectively. After storage, 30% of COD reduction was observed in the CM stored at $35^{\circ}C$, while the COD removal decreased to only 6% at $15^{\circ}C$. It was found that only 3-11% of COD removal was done by anaerobic process, while the rest of COD removal was done by aerobic biological process. Methanobrevibacter and Methanolobus were found to be the dominant species in the CM, and the dominance of Methanolobus psychrophilus increased at lower storage temperature. Specific methanogenic activity test results showed that the inhibition by low temperature was temporal.

A Study on the Distribution of Summer Water Temperatures of the Central Coast of the Southern Sea of Korea Using Numerical Experimentation (수치실험을 이용한 남해 중부 연안의 하계 수온 분포 연구)

  • To understand the spatial-temporal distribution of seawater in Korea's South Sea, seawater movement and the distribution of water temperature has been analyzed using a hydrodynamic model (the Princeton Ocean Model). The directions of tidal currents were generally westward during flood tides and eastward during ebb tides. Northeastward Tsushima Warm Currents in the open sea, which is deeper than 50m were stronger than in coastal areas. Analysis of data from the hydrodynamic model showed that the water temperature in the semi-closed bay was relatively higher ($26{\sim}28^{\circ}C$) than in the open sea ($18{\sim}22^{\circ}C$). The exchange volume of semi-closed seawater was $10,331m^3/sec$ in Gwangyang Bay, $16,935m^3/sec$ in Yeosu-Gamag Bay and $13,454m^3/sec$ in Geoje-Hansan Bay. Therefore, it was shown that the lower seawater exchange volume is, the higher seawater temperature will be.
