Al2O3/SiC Whisker원료 합성 (Synthesis of Al2O3/SiC Whisker)

  • Al2O3/SiC composite-material was synthesized by the birth-spread mechanism through the carbothermal reduction reaction of SiO2 in Ha-Dong Kaolin with carbon powder under H2 gas atmosphere at 1300~140$0^{\circ}C$. Average diameter of synthesized SiC whiskers were 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and aspect ratio (c/a) was 10~100. Al2O3 particles and SiC whiskers were mixed homogeneously in the reacted pellet.

자동차용 마찰재에 함유된 세라믹분말의 함량에 따른 마찰특성 (Friction Characteristics of Automotive Friction Materials with Ceramic Powder Contents)

  • The friction characteristics of automotive brake friction materials that contained different ceramic content were investigated. Several kinds of raw materials, such as resin-based binder, reinforcing fiber, friction restraint, abrasive, and filling materials were mixed, pressed, and heated in order to make the brake friction materials. The contents of SiC and $BaSO_4$ changed from 5 vol% to 20 vol%, respectively. In addition to this, the content of $Al_2O_3$ adjusted from 1 vol% to 16 vol%. The surface morphology of the SiC containing sample appeared rough while more debris was observed when the contents of SiC increased. This implies that the SiC containing brake composite was not adequate for the automobile. However, the relatively smooth surface was observed in samples that contained the $Al_2O_3$. But the roughness was low with a content of 11 vol% $Al_2O_3$ compared to the other samples. This is consistent with the abrasive properties of the samples. In the case of $BaSO_4$ containing samples, the smoothes surface was observed in the contents of 15 vol% $BaSO_4$. Thus, it was concluded that the 11 vol% $Al_2O_3$ and 15 vol% $BaSO_4$ containing composite would be the optimum content for the brake composite. Similar to the results of the surface morphology, the abrasion resistance consistently decreased when the content of SiC increased. On the contrary, the sample that contained 11 vol% $Al_2O_3$ and 15 vol% $BaSO_4$ showed the highest abrasion resistance compared to the other samples.

액상소결(液狀燒結)한 SiC계(系)의 전도성(電導性) 복합체(複合體)의 미세구조(微細構造)와 특성(特性)에 미치는 Boride의 영향(影響) (Effects of Boride on Microstructure and Properties of the Electroconductive Ceramic Composites of Liquid-Phase-Sintered Silicon Carbide System)

  • The composites were fabricated, respectively, using 61[vol.%] SiC-39[vol.%] $TiB_2$ and using 61[vol.%] SiC-39[vol.%] $ZrB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ by hot pressing annealing at $1650[^{\circ}C]$ for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$ were not observed in this microstructure. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed SiC(6H, 3C), $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$ and $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ crystal phase on the Liquid-Phase-Sintered(LPS) $SiC-TiB_2$, and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite. $\beta\rightarrow\alpha-SiC$ phase transformation was occurred on the $SiC-TiB_2$ and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite. The relative density, the flexural strength and Young's modulus showed the highest value of 98.57[%], 249.42[MPa] and 91.64[GPa] in $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite at room temperature respectively. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of $7.96{\times}10^{-4}[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$ for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite at $25[^{\circ}C]$. The electrical resistivity of the $SiC-TiB_2$ and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite was all positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]$ to $700[^{\circ}C]$. The resistance temperature coefficient of composite showed the lowest value of $1.319\times10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C]$ for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite in the temperature ranges from $100[^{\circ}C]$ to $300[^{\circ}C]$ Compositional design and optimization of processing parameters are key factors for controlling and improving the properties of SiC-based electroconductive ceramic composites.

$Al_2O_3-SiC$ 복합재료의 상압소결시 치밀화에 미치는 SiC 원료분말의 크기영향 (Effect of SiC Particles Size on the Densification of $Al_2O_3-SiC$ Composite During Pressureless Sintering)

  • Effect of SiC particle size of the densification of Al2O3-SiC composite during pressureless sintering was investigated. Two types of SiC powders having average particle size of 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used. Densification rate of the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was slower than that of the specimen containg 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles. Although the relative density of the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was below 90% of theoretical density after sintering at 155$0^{\circ}C$ the complete closure of open pores occurred. Therefore full densification could be obtained by subsequent HIP. On the other hand in the specimen containing 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles the complete closed pore was observed at 95% of theoretical density. Such a fast pore closure in the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles is likely to occur as a result of dense reaction layer formation on the specimen surface which is attributed to the high reactivity of small size particles with sintering atmosphere.

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of pressed and annealed $\beta-SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as a function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$-SiC(6H), TiB2, and (Al5Y3O12). Reaction between Al2O3 and $Y_2O_3$ formed YAG but the relative density decreased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents. The Flexural strength showed the value of 458.9 MPa for composites added with 4 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperatures. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging, the fracture toughness showed 6.2, 6.0 and 6.6 MPa.m1/2 for composites added with 4, 8 and 12 wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively at room temperature. The resistance temperature coefficient showed the value of $3.6\times10^{-3},\; 2.9\times10^{-3}\; and\; 3.0\times10^{-3} /^{\circ}C$$^{\circ}C$ for composite added with 4, 8 and 12 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$additives respectively at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature range of $25^{\circ}C\; to\; 700^{\circ}$.

  • Mechanical properties of $Al_2O_3$ based composite ceramics reinforced by SiC whiskers up to 40% by volume we-re investigated. Specimens were hot pressed at $1, 500^{\circ}C$ under 28.5MPa for 30min in Ar atmosphere. Porosities room temperaturefracture toughnesses and flexural strengths up $1, 000^{\circ}C$ were measured. Porosities were increa-sed as the SiC whisker cortent increased. After compensating the effect of porosities that means extrapolated in zero porosities the reinforced composites exhibited increases in flexural strength and fracture toughness as the whi-sker content increased, .

Tribological Behaviour of the Si/SiC and the Si/SiC/Graphite Composites

  • The dense sintered bodies of Si/SiC composite with various Si contents could be fabricated by changing the green density in the forming process. The Si/SiC/graphite composites with various graphite contents could be also fabricated by changing a graphite content in the starting composition. Their mechanical and tribological properties were characterized and wear mechanism was also studided. The hardness and strength of the Si/SiC and the Si/SiC/graphite were decreased with increasing the contents of free Si and graphite, respectively. However, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate had no specific relations to their hardness and strength. Adhesion of free Si was a main factor to determine a wear resistance of the Si/SiC composite. In the case of the Si/SiC/graphite, solid lubricationl and liquid reservoir of the graphite particles played the main role of the reduction of the friction force. In the torque test to estimate the possibility of practical of practical applications, the value of torque between the Al2O3 disk and Si/SiC/graphite disk was 1/6 lower compared with two $Al_2O_3$ disks on the basis of 100,000 cycles.

  • Aluminum based metal matrix composites(MMCs) are well known for their high specific strength, stiffness and hardness. They are gaining further importance because of their high wear resistance. In this study, Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15% and Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% hybird MMCs' wear behavior were characterized by the pin-on-disk test under various normal load The superior wear resistance was exhibited at Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% MMCs. And this MMCs' predominant wear mechanism is subsurface cracking in the low load wear regime. Others(Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15%) showed the similar wear resistance with each other at the same test condition. In the low load & room temperature condition, the wear resistance was improved due to the high hardness of the ceramic reinforcements. As the test load increased, the wear properties were governed by the wear properties of matrix.

  • The initiation and growth of $\alpha$-Al2O3/metal composites by the directed oxidation of molten commercial AlZnMg-alloy at 1223-1423K were investigated. Spontaneous bulk growth did not occur on the alloy alone. but the uniform initiation and growth of the composite were obtained by putting a thin layer of SiO2 particles on the surface of the alloy. Without SiO2 the external surface of the oxide layer was convered by MgO and MgAl2O4. But with the SiO2 reaction initiate the porous ZnO layers were found on the growth surface. The higher process temperature yielded a lower metal content. The oxidation product of $\alpha$-Al2O3 was found to be oriented with c-axis parallel to th growth direction. The growth rates increased with temperature and the apparent activation energy was 111.8 kJ/mol.
