  • The initial growth mode of Nb on Ag(110) in sub-monolayer region is studied using Scanning Tunneling microscopy. E-beam evaporated Nb is deposited onto the substrate at RT, and STM measurements are carried out at RT and 78K. With Nb being immiscible in bulk Ag, 3D islands formation begins at early stage and no particular ordered structure is found. At very low coverages, however, many interesting phenomena are observed in association with Nb clusters. Small Nb clusters as deposited displays very strong size dependence against atom-manipulation by the STM tip. In addition, the apparent corrugation of clusters below the critical size exhibits dramatic dependence on the imaging bias, disappearing completely over a wide range of the bias. Possible physical mechanism responsible for such behavior will be discussed.

  • The microstructure and bond strength are examined on the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints brazed by the Ag-Ti based alloys with different Ti contents. In the SiC/SiC brazed joints, the thickness of the reaction layers at the bond interface and the Ti particles in the brazing alloy matrices increase with Ti contents. When Ti is added up to 9 at% in the brazing alloy. $Ti_3SiC_2$ phase in addition to TiC and $Ti_5Si_3$ phase is newly created at the bond interface and TiAg phase is produced from peritectic reaction in the brazing alloy matrix. In the SiC/mild steel joints brazed with different Ti contents, the microstructure at the bond interface and in the brazing alloy matrix near SiC varies similarly to the case of SiC/SiC brazed joints. But, in the brazing alloy matrix near the mild steel, Fe-Ti intermetallic compounds are produced and increased with Ti contents. The bond strengths of the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazed joints are independent on Ti contents in the brazing alloy. There are no large differences of the bond strength between SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazed joints. In the SiC/mild steel brazed joints, Fe dissolved from the mild steel does not affect on the bond strength of the joints. Thermal contraction of the mild steel has nearly no effects on the bond strength due to the wide brazing gap of specimens used in the four-point bend test. The brazed joints has the average bond strength of about 200 MPa independently on Ti contents, Fe dissolution and joint type. Fracture in four-point bend test initiates at the interface between SiC and TiC reaction layer and propagates through SiC bulk. The adhesive strength between SiC and TiC reaction layer seems to mainly control the bond strength of the brazed joints.

  • $MO-SiO_2$ (M = Zn, Sn, In, Ag, Ni) binary silica gels were synthesized by sol-gel method and their structural change with the kind of metal ions was characterized by XRD, FT- IR and $^{29}$Si-NMR. Although X-ray analysis showed partial recrystallization of $AgNO_3$ in $Ag-SiO_2$gel, crystalline phase formed by the bonding between metal ion and the silica matrix didn't appear in all $MO-SiO_2$ gels. The FT-IR analysis showed that Zn, Sn and in partially formed Si-O-M bonding in silica matrix and made an shift of absorption peak to by Si-O-Si symmetrical vibration. In addition, $^{29}Si-NMR$ studies showed that Zn, Sn and In didn't affect sol-gel process of silica and were linked with non-bridging oxygen of the linear silica structure, which formed imperfect network because of low temperature sol-gel process. Ag and Ni make a role of catalysis on sol-gel process, resulting in densifying the silica network structure.

  • The mine of our present concern is situated at Shim-ri, Gusan-myon, Changwon-gun, Kyongsang-namdo, with lattitude $128^{\circ}35^{\prime}{\sim}36^{\prime}N$ and longitude $35^{\circ}03^{\prime}{\sim}04^{\prime}E$. This mine has not been noticed until the intermittent geological survey for the ore deposits were initiated from September, 1967 till 1970. The main mineralized zones, No.1 and No.2 zones, were studied by the diamond drilling of 9 holes down to the total depth of 1,140m, and found to have ore reserves of Cu 1.99% ore, estimated to reach around $358,000{\frac{M}{T}}$ (proved $117,000{\frac{M}{T}}$, indicated $241,000{\frac{M}{T}}$), which triggered the new exploitation of this mine. Geological composition of the district near the mine is mainly from the andesite belonging to the Silla Series of Kyongsang System and the distribution is broadly spread. Ore deposits are the hydrothermal one, filling the shear zone formed alongside the andesite main joint. There are two stripes of copper bearing mineralized zone which are about 40~70 meters apart and parallel to each other, in addition to which two others are expected. The strike of the main mineralized zone lies at $N15^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}W$, the dip at $60^{\circ}{\sim}70^{\circ}NE$. The principal components of the ore mineral are chalcopyrite, bornite and as secondary, cuprite, tenorite, azurite and malachite. Pyrite, magnetite, specular hematite, very little of galena, sphalerite, quartz, epidote, zoisite, chlorite and calcite are found as gangue mineral. Confirmed by the drilling, the main mineralized zone, No.1 zone, has the length of 320m, average width of 1.62m, Ag 26g/t, Cu 1.84% and the average width of the ore zone except the narrow barren andesite horse interposed in the mineralized zone is 1.32m with Ag 32g/t and Cu 2.26%. The mineralized zone No.2 is 340m long, 1.00m wide with Ag 30g/t and Cu 2.15%. Neglecting the barren andesite horse the width is 0.73m with Ag 42g/t and Cu 2.94%.

  • In this study, nano sized colloidal Ag was made by using a seed sol method. Colloidal Ag solution was spouted on the surface of the inorganic pigment using the hybridizer system and spray nozzle. Then, the surface of the inorganic pigment was modified by $TiO_2$ to obtain the antibacterial ability. In the manufacturing process of nano sized colloidal Ag, it was confirmed that the size of particles increased by addition of $AgNO_3$ and increased the reaction time. The antibacterial measurement of the inorganic pigment showed that the growth of fungus decreased as the reaction time was increased. After the antibacterial ability appeared, in 5~7 h of the antibacterial inoculation experiment, it was measured that the antibacterial activity was excellent at a fixed time frame. The photodecomposition of benzene using $TiO_2$ as the photocatalyst showed 60~70% efficiency in about 80 min. reaction time. It was shown that more than 90% of this efficiency was achieved in the reaction time of about 30 min.

Then, the surface of the inorganic pigment was modified by titanium dioxide in order to possess antibacterial ability. Nano-sized colloidal Ag was made by using a seed sol method in this study. It was confirmed that the size of particle per unit weight becomes enlarged, as the addition of $AgNO_{3}$ increased, and as the time of reaction increased, in the manufacturing process of nano-sized colloidal Ag. The antibacterial measurement of the inorganic pigment showed that the growth of fungus was reduced as the reaction time increased. It was measured that the antibacterial activity was excellent at fixed time frame, after the antibacterial ability appeared in $5{\sim}7$ hours of the antibacterial inoculation experiment. The experiment of titanium dioxide's Photocatalyst effect showed $60{\sim}70%$ efficiency in about 80 minute reaction time of the dissolution results regarding measurements of benzene. It was shown that more than 90% of the dissolution efficiency was achieved in the reaction time of about 30 minute.

  • A Carboxymethyl Cellulase (CMCase) has been isolated and purified from the edible mushroom, Stropharia rugosoannulata. The molecular weight of CMCase was estimated to be 54 kDa by SDS polyacryl amide gel electrophoresis. The maximum activity of the purified CMCase was observed at pH 4.0 and $40^{\circ}C$, and stable for pH 3.0 to 11.0 to maintain 40% activity. The CMCase activity was activated by $AgNO_{3},\;MgSO_{4},\;and\;KCl$. However, its activity was inhibited by 1,10-phenanthroline, KCN and L-cysteine. Also, the enzyme activity was decreased by the addition of EDTA, suggesting that the purified CMCase is metalloenzyme.

  • Silver doped ZnO (SZO) films were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering on glass substrates with extraordinary designed ZnO target. With the doping source for target, use AgNO$_3$ powder on a various rate (0, 2, and 4 wt.%). We investigated dependence of coating parameter such as dopant content in target and substrate temperature in the SZO films. The SZO films have a preferred orientation in the (002) direction. As amounts of the Ag dopant in the target were increased, the crystallinity and the transmittance and optical band gap were decreased. And the substrate temperature were increased, the crystallinity and the transmittance were increased. But the crystallinity and the transmittance of SZO films were retrograde at 200$^{\circ}C$. Upside facts were related with composition. In addition, the Oxygen K-edge features of the SZO films were investigated by using near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Changes of optical band gap of the SZO films were explained compared with XRD, XPS and NEXAFS spectra.

  • Methylotrophic actinomycetes No. 155 produced an aminoglycoside antibiotics(AG)-resistant inhibitor. We have previously reported that the inhibitor shows strong inhibition to sisomicin-resistant strain. In order to understand the functions of inhibitor and sisomicin-resistance, characterizations and purification of inhibitor were investigated. Strain No. 155 was tentatively identified as Nocardiopsis sp. based on morphological and some physiological characteristics. In the antimicrobial activity test, the addition of inhibitor to sisomicin showed a reduction effect of MIC on the test strains such as Gram(+), Gram(-) bacteria and yeasts. The combination of the inhibitor and various antibiotics revealed synergistic against E. coli K-12 and B. subtilis PCI 219. The induced intracellular proteins from sisomicin-resistant strain exhibited the sisomicin inactivation by invitro test. And the induced intracellular proteins were inactivated by addition of the inhibitor. The inhibitor compound was purified by anion exchange chromatography(Dowex-1) and HPLC using Asahipak ES-502C column. The purified inhibitor compound was detected in a single peak(above 98.5% purity) through the HPLC analysis.

  • As a result of this study, DPPH radical scavenging activity was 81.8% at a concentration of 100 ㎍/mL of Alpinia galanga L. rhizome 70% ethanol extract (AG.E), and ABTS+ radical scavenging activity was confirmed to be 99.8%, similar to L-Ascorbic acid (AA), at a low concentration of 50 ㎍/mL AG.E. To measure anti-aging activity, collagenase and elastase inhibitory activities were measured and AG.E showed higher inhibitory effects than epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) starting at a low concentration of 50 ㎍/mL. In particular, AG.E showed inhibitory effects more than three times that of EGCG at a concentration of 500 ㎍/mL. In order to verify anti-aging effect of AG.E in CCD-986sk cell, good anti-aging effect was obtained in various experiments stimulated with UVB. In a gene expression analysis experiment using RT-PCR, the COL1A mRNA expression level was found to increase 2.90 times compared to no addition at a low concentration of 20 ㎍/mL AG.E, confirming the possibility of developing it as a good functional material related to anti-aging. As a basic study on temporal biological activity preservation ratio of material when applied to formulations, AG.E, and AA were added to a stable W/O type emulsion and stored in a thermostat at 25 ℃ for 60 days. As a result of measuring DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging activities on the 1st, 30th, and 60th days, it was confirmed that antioxidant effects are maintained at a high level over time in formulations.
