In this study high power Nd:YAG laser welding of structural steel was investigated. For the test steel blocks of $50{\times}50{\times}200mm$ were cut and machined, and bead-on-plate weld was made on the machined surface. Argon, nitrogen, helium, dry air or mixed gases were used to find the effect of shielding conditions on the bead formation. Results demonstrated that there were Fe I rich region and Fe II rich region in the laser induced plasma column based on the spectral analysis with S-2000 field spectrometer The Fe I region was located at the root of the column near keyhole opening. On the other hand, Fe II region was found at the middle of the plasma column. In the Nd:YAG laser welding, Fe I region emitted continuum which had peak value at wave length of around 710nm, and Fe II region had the peak at 580nm. In the welding of steel by $CO_2$ laser, however, no continuum was observed. There showed two groups of strong spikes in the $CO_2$ laser welding; the first group was displayed at the wave band of 450-560nm. This spike group emitted stronger intensity of light and sharper peaks than those group at 680-800nm.
Unsaturated $Cr(CO)_x(1{\leq}x{\leq}5)$molecules were generated in the gas phase from photolysis of $Cr(CO)_6$vapor in He using an unfocussed weak UV laser pulse and their reactions with $O_2$ and $N_2O$ have been studied. The formation and disappearance of the ground state CrO molecules were identified by monitoring laser-induced fluorescence(LIF) intensities vs delay time between the photolysis and probe pulses. The photolysis laser power dependence as well as the delay time dependence of LIF intensities from the CrO orange system showed different behavior as those from ground state Cr atoms, suggesting that the ground state CrO molecules were generated from the reaction between $O_2/N_2O$ and photo-fragments of $Cr(CO)_6$ by one photon absorption. The depletion rate constants for the ground state CrO by $O_2$ and $N_2O$ are $5.4{\pm}0.2{\times}10^{-11}$ and $6.5{\pm}0.4{\times}10^{-12}cm^3molecule^{-1}s^{-1}$, respectively.

A Safety Monitoring System using a laser and 2-D arrayed photo sensors is developed. To monitor of the deformation and small rotation of structure the developed optical system using 2-D photo sensor array was used to detect the variation of optical orbit of laser which was induced by deformation of the structure. Also, an operating program to manage the system and an algorithm for the data acquisition and the database are introduced. In this study, we demonstrated the capabilities of this system by laboratory experiments before applying the system to the field.

In the multi-pass welding of pressure vessels or ships, the mechanical touch sensor system is generally used together with a manipulator to measure the gap and depth of the narrow gap to perform seam tracking. Unfortunately, such mechanical touch sensors may commit measuring errors caused by the deterioration of the measuring device. An automation system of narrow gap multi-pass welding using a laser vision system which can track the seam line of narrow gap and which can control welding power has been developed. The joint profile of the narrow gap, with 250mm depth and 28mm width, can be captured by laser vision camera. The image is then processed for defining tracking positions of the torch during welding. Then, the real-time correction of lateral and vertical position of the torch can be done by the laser vision system. The adaptive control of welding conditions like welding currents and welding speeds, can also be performed by the laser vision system, which cannot be done by conventional mechanical touch systems. The developed automation system will be adopted to reduce the idle time of welders, which happens frequently in conventional long welding processes, and to improve the reliability of the weld quality as well.

High viscosity mixing powder is a very useful material for laser cladding. This material has a high viscosity so that it can be sticked to substrate. Therefore, Laser cladding can be performed on a curved or slope surface. Laser cladding can be easily performed with the material instead of wire that is difficult to be manufactured in some case. In this experiment, it was used a high viscosity mixing powder which consists of a high temperature flux and a bronze powder. And AC2B alloy material was used as a substrate. Flux prevents the clad layer from being oxidized and increases bonding property between substrate and cladding material. It makes possible to laser cladding at low level energy.
The microstructure, hardness, and wear behaviors of a High Velocity Oxygen Fuel(HVOF) sprayed WC-CoFe coating are comparatively investigated before and after laser heat treatments of the coating surface. During the spraying, the binder metal is melted and a small portion of WC is decomposed to $W_2C$. A porous coating is formed by evolution of carbon oxide gases formed by the reaction of the free carbon and the sprayed oxygen gas. The laser heat treatment eliminates the porosity and provides a more densified microstructure. After laser heat treatment, the porosity in the coating layer decreases from 1.7 % to 1.2 and the coating thickness decreases from $150{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$. The surface hardness increases from 1440 Hv to 1117 Hv. In the wear test, the friction coefficient of coating decreases from 0.45 to 0.32 and the wear resistance is improved by the laser heat treatment. The improvement is likely due to the formation of oxide tribofilms.
Q-switched Waveguide $CO_{2}$ laser using polygon mirror were constructed and their output characteristics were measured. Waveguide was made of the beryllium oxide tube of inner diameter of 2 mm, outer diameter of 20 mm, and length of 200 mm. A flat ZnSe output coupler of 80% reflectivity was placed on the 9 mm distance from the end of the waveguide. Convex lens was used to reduce the coupling loss between the polygon mirror and the waveguide. The polygon mirror was located behind of convex lens. With this condition, continuous output of the laser were measured as 1.2 W. In the Q-switched mode. pulse width 120 ns were measured with rotational speed 7,559 RPM. and peak power of up to 250 W. 250 W.

We demonstrate a pulsed CO$_2$laser with long pulse duration of millisecond order in the low pressure less than 30 Torr. A new power supply for our laser system switches the voltage of AC power line(60㎐) directly. The power supply doesn't need elements such as a rectified bridge, energy-storage capacitors. and a current-limiting resistor in the discharge circuit. In order to control the laser output power, the pulse repetition rate is adjusted up to 60㎐ and the firing angle of SCR gate is varied from 30˚ to 150˚. A ZCS(Zero Crossing Switch) circuit and a PIC one-chip microprocessor are used to control the gate signal of SCR precisely. The maximum laser output is 23W at the total pressure of 18 Torr, the pulse repetition rate of 60㎐, and SCR gate firing angle of 90˚. In addition, the obtained laser pulse width is approximately 3㎳(FWHM)
