Using the Monte Carlo simulation, a study on the lion-proportionality of the prototype phoswich detector with $2'{\times}2'$ CSI(Tl) and plastic scintillator, which was made by KAERI, has been carried. The defector response functions (DRFs) calculated by simulations were compared with the experimental measurement on the $^{137}Cs\;and\;^{60}Co$. To precisely simulate the DRF for the phoswich, the CSI(Tl) non-proportionality was calculated using the electron response and the simplified electron cascade sequence for treating the photoelectric absorption event. The resulting DRFs of $^{137}Cs\;and\;^{60}Co$ sources obtained by simulations were compared with experiments for verification. For $^{137}Cs$, gamma-ray responses simulated by MCNP5 are generally good agreement with the measured ones. But the DRF of $^{60}Co$ does not match well with the results of experiment in the energy region below second peak due to the coincidence effect of two gamma-rays (1.17 MeV and 1.33 MeV). Through the analysis of the non-proportionality of CsI(Tl) in the prototype phoswich, the improved DRFs considering non-proportionality were produced and the simulation results were verified using the experimental measurements. However, to more precisely reproduce the DRF for the phoswich, further studies in relation to the electron channeling effect and the Doppler broadening effect of a scintillator are still needed as well as considering that effect of the transfer contribution.

Damage produced by radiation elicits a complex response in mammalian cells, including growth rate changes and the induction of a variety of genes associated with growth control and apoptosis. At doses of 10,000 cGy or greater, the exposed individual was killed in a matter of minutes to a couple of days, with symptoms consistent with pathology of the central nervous system(CNS) including degenerative changes. The nature of the damage in irradiated cells underlies the unique hazards of ionizing radiation. Radiation injury to CNS is a rare event in clinical medicine, but it is catastrophic for the patient in whom it occurs. The incidence of cerebral necrosis has been reported as high as 16% for doses greater than 6,000 cGy. In this study, the effect of radiation on brain tissue was studied in vivo. Jun and p53 genes in the rat brain were induced by whole body irradiation of rat with 600Co in doses between 1 Gy and 100 Gy and analyzed for expression of jun and p53 genes at the postirradiation time up to 6 hours. Northern analyses were done using 1.8 Kb & 0.8 Kb-pGEM-2-JUN/Eco RI/Pst I fragments, 2.0 Kb-php53B/Bam HI fragment and ,1.1 Kb-pBluescript SK--ACTIN/Eco RI fragment as the digoxigenin or [${\alpha}^{32}P$] dCTPlabeled probes for Jun, p53 and ${\beta}$-actin genes, respectively. Jun gene seemed to be expressed near the threshold levels in 1 hour after irradiation of $^{60}$Co in dose less than 1 Gy and was expressed in maximum at 1 hour after irradiation of $^{60}$Co in dose of 30 Gy. Jun was expressed increasingly with time until 5 or 6 hours after irradiation of $^{60}$Co in doses of 1 Gy and 10 Gy. After irradiation of $^{60}$Co in dose between 20 Gr and 100 Gy, the expression of Jun was however increased to peak in 2 hours and decreased thereafter. p53 gene in this study also seemed to be expressed near the threshold levels in 1 hour after irradiation of $^{60}$Co in dose less than 1 Gy and was expressed in maximum at 6 hours after irradiation of $^{60}$Co in dose of 1 Gy, p53 was expressed increasingly with time until 5 or 6 hours after irradiation of $^{60}$Co in dose between 1 Gy and 40 Gy. After irradiation of $^{60}$Co in doses of 50 Gy and 100 Gy, the expression of p53 was however increased to peak in 2 hours and decreased thereafter. The expression of Jun and p53 genes was not correlative in the brain tissue from rats. It seemed to be very important for the establishment of the optimum conditions for the animal studies relevant to the responses of genes inducible on DNA damage to ionizing radiation in mammalian cells. But there are many limitations to the animal studies such as the ununiform patterns of gene expression from the tissue because of its complex compositions. It is necessary to overcome the limitations for development of in situ Northern analysis.

In this study, $Co^{60}$ gamma-ray induced loss on Ge-doped single mode (SM) fiber has been measured. Gamma-ray is irradiated for 4 hours at the dose rate of 0.5 kGy/hr, 2 kGy/hr, 8 kGy/hr. Consequently, gamma-ray induced loss based on radiation effects in Ge-doped SM fiber occur significantly. Furthermore, dose rate effect was observed, that dose rate using the same total dose increased higher, then optical fiber loss increased more. Also annealing effect was observed, that the loss after irradiation, increased higher, then the recovery rate of loss was increased. This results are foreseen to be base data in the future radiation-hardened optical fiber study.
In order to evaluate the antifungal activity of bacteria against plant pathogenic fungi, 8 bacteria were isolated from mushroom compost hot spring, seaweed, and forest soil and mutants from them were induced by $LD_{95}$ gamma radiation($^{60}Co$). Bacillus circulans K1, Burkholderia gladioli K4 and Bacillus subtilis YS1 showed wide antifungal spectrum against 12 kinds of plant pathogenic fungi. From the radiation sensitivity test, B. gladioli K4 was very sensitive to gamma radiation and its $D_{10}$ value was 0.11 kGy. Antifungal activities of B. circulans Kl-1004 and B. subtilis YS1-1009, which were induced by the radiation of $^{60}Co$ increased against Botryosphaeria dothidea. The mutant strains, B. subtilis YS1-1006 and B. subtilis YS1-1009 were resistant to tebuconazole and copper hydroxide. SAR535, SAR5108, and SAR5118 mutated from Streptomyces sp. SAR01 were antifungal activity deficient mutants against 5 kinds of plant pathogenic fungi compared to wild strain, so that they could be supposed to be model strains far studying antifungal mechanism. It is suggested that various functional types of mutants could be induced by gamma radiation and applied usefully.
A series of experiments on the effects of ${\gamma}-irradiation$ was performed to reveal the pathogenicity of ${\gamma}-irradiated$ oocysts of E tenella from Cobalt-60 and its progeny. The SPF chickens were inoculated with differnt doses of radiation and inoculum. The level of 100 Gy ${\gamma}-irradiation$ from $^{60}Co$ and the level of inoculum with $1{\times}10^4$ oocysts were recognized more pathogenic than those of the other groups by comparison of body weight gains, blood in feces and lesion scores. The signs of blood in feces, lesion score and the number of excreted oocysts in the feces were revealed as the lowest in the group of the ${\gamma}-irradiated$ oocysts, the average in the group of the 1st and the 3rd progeny, and the highest in the group of non-irradiated oocysts of E $tenell\grave{a}$. The body weight gain of the group immunized with ${\gamma}-irradiated$ oocysts of E tenella was higher than those of the non-irradiated, the 1st and 3rd progeny groups. The body weight gain of the groups immunized with the 1st and the 3rd progeny of E tenella were higher than that of the non-irradiated group. The feed conversion ration of the group immunized with ${\gamma}-irradiated$ oocysts of E tenella was lower than those of the non-irradiated, the 1st and the 3rd progeny groups. The feed conversion ratios of the group immunized with the 1st and 3rd progeny of ${\gamma}-irradiated$ oocysts were lower than that of the group infected with non-irradiated E tenella. The anticoccidial index(ACI 190.6) in the chickens immunized with the ${\gamma}-irradiated$ oocysts of E tenella and those(ACI 142.8 and 107.4) of the 1st and the 3rd progeny groups were higher than that (ACT 87.4) of the group infected with non-irradiated E tenella. It was thought that the pathogenicity of ${\gamma}-irradiated$ E tenella would be recovered according to increase the number of generation passaged in chicken.

In this study, we studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the fiber Bragg gratings written by femtosecond UV laser in single mode optical fibers. The fiber Bragg gratings were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of about 31.6 kGy at the dose rate of 106 Gy/min. According to the experimental data and analysis results, we confirmed Bragg gratings written by femtosecond laser have the excellent radiation-hardened characteristics for high radiation environments.
This paper deals with an experimental study to apply commercial semiconductors to measure radiation dose rate for gamma ray. Since the low cost, small size, high efficiency and ruggedness of silicon photodiodes make them attractive photodetectors, they coulde be effectively used in measuring any radiation such as gamma ray. Most PN photodiodes show that the reverse current increases when the light is increased. Therefore the depletion region of them have influence on the reverse current, so we choose silicon PIN photodiodes with large depletion region. In order to detect radiation dose rate and then, to apply in developing any gamma ray dosimeter, some examinations and experiments were performed to PIN photodiodes in this work. Two kinds of PIN photodiodes, such as NEC's PH302 and SIEMENS's BPW34, were tested in a Co-60 gamma irradiation facility with a semiconductor parameter analyzer. As a result, we found that such PIN photodiodes present good linearity in diode current characteristics with dose rate. Therefore silicon PIN photodiodes could be suitably used in designing gamma ray dosimeters.

To study the radiation related gene expression in mutants of Bacillus lentimorbus WJ5 induced by gamm radiation, the simultaneous gene expression was analyzed by DNA micro array. We constructed DNA chips including two thousand randomly digested genome spots of B. lentimorbus WJ5 and compared its quantitative aspect with seven mutants induced by gamma radiation $(^{60}/Co)$. From the cluster analysis of gene expression pattern, totally 408 genes were expressed and 27 genes were significantly upregulated by the gamma radiation in all mutants. Especially, genes involved in repair (mutL, mutM), energy metabolism (acsA, sdhB, pgk, yhjB, citB), protease (npr), and reduction response to oxidative stress (HMM) were simultaneously upregulated. It seems that the induction of the direct and/or indirect repair related genes in mutants induced by gamma radiation could be remarkably different from the adaptive responses against acute exposure to radiation.
The n-type germanium crystals have been irradiated by $^{60}$ Co gamma-ray with 647 Mrad at room temperature for compensation. The Ge(${\gamma}$) detectors were fabricated from the gamma-ray irradiated germanium single crystals. The detector characteristics of the Ge (${\gamma}$) detectors were comparable to those of thin Ge(Li) detectors and high purity germanium detectors. The thermal stability of the Ge (${\gamma}$) detector showed a feasibility for ambient temperature storage.
