Potato and garlic irradiated with gamma ray and electron beam at sprout-inhibition doses, 0.15 and 0.30 kGy were subjected to the detection whether they are irradiated or not by measuring thermoluminescence(TL) for the minerals adhering to the samples. Minerals extracted from the samples showed a high correlation coefficients between absorbed doses and corresponding TL responses. Nonirradiated samples, however, did not exhibit characteristic TL glowcurves. Major glowcurve peaks were observed at 200 to $260^{\circ}C$ in all irradiated samples. TL intensity was proportional to irradiated doses, but it varied with the samples tested even at the same dose. It can be concluded from the results that detection of irradiated potato and garlic is possible by measuring TL for extracted minerals from the unknown samples.
Chemical radiation protection is an important strategy to protect living beings against the deleterious effects of radiation. In the present study, the radioprotective effect of hydro-alcoholic extract of Panax ginseng extract (PGR-HAE) was studied on radiation-induced deleterious alterations in Swiss albino mice. Oral administration of such extract (25 mg/kg b wt/day/animal) for 5 consecutive days, half an h. before whole-body exposure to 6 Gy gamma radiation, enhanced the 30 days survival and also inhibited the radiogenic sickness, weight loss and life shortening. PGR-HAE ameliorated radiation induced depletion in blood constituents at different necropsy intervals between 12 h to 30 d, and significantly increased the number of femoral spleen colony forming units that survived after irradiation. Furthermore, it checked depletion of glutathione and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase) as well as elevation of lipid peroxidation (LPO) level in blood and liver. The significant reduction in the yield of LPO demonstrates that PGR-HAE protects the membranes against radiation-induced oxidative damage. These findings conclude that such plant extract provides significant radioprotection, and it may be potentially valuable in the prevention of injuries caused during planned and unplanned radiation exposure.
Spores of Aspergillus sp. SU14 were treated repeatedly and sequentially with $Co^{60}$${\gamma}$-rays, ultraviolet irradiation, and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. One selected mutant strain, Aspergillus sp. SU14-M15, produced cellulase in a yield 2.2-fold exceeding that of the wild type. Optimal conditions for the production of cellulase by the mutant fungal strain using solid-state fermentation were examined. The medium consisted of wheat-bran supplemented with 1% (w/w) urea or $NH_4Cl$, 1% (w/w) rice starch, 2.5 mM $MgCl_2$, and 0.05% (v/w) Tween 80. Optimal moisture content and initial pH was 50% (v/w) and 3.5, respectively, and optimal aeration area was 3/100 (inoculated wheat bran/container). The medium was inoculated with 25% 48 hr seeding culture and fermented at $35^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. The resulting cellulase yield was 8.5-fold more than that of the wild type strain grown on the basal wheat bran medium.
A selected fungal strain, for production of the raw-starchdigesting enzyme by solid-state fermentation, was improved by two repeated sequential exposures to ${\gamma}$-irradiation of $Co^{60}$, ultraviolet, and four repeated treatments with Nmethyl-N'-nitrosoguanidine. The mutant strain Aspergillus sp. XN15 was chosen after a rigorous screening process, with its production of the raw-starch-digesting enzyme being twice that of usual wild varieties cultured under preoptimized conditions and in an unsupplemented medium. After 17 successive subculturings, the enzyme production of the mutant was stable. Optimal conditions for the production of the enzyme by solid-state fermentation, using wheat bran as the substrate, were accomplished for the mutant Aspergillus sp. XN15. With the optimal fermentation conditions, and a solid medium supplemented with nitrogen sources of 1% urea and 1% $NH_4NO_3$, 2.5 mM $CoSO_4$, 0.05% (v/w) Tween 80, and 1% glucose, the mutant Aspergillus sp. XN15 produced the raw-starch-digesting enzyme in quantities 19.4 times greater than a typical wild variety. Finally, XN15, through simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of a raw rice corn starch slurry, produced a high level of ethanol with $Y_{p/s}$ of 0.47 g/g.

Lanasol dyes containing ${\alpha}$-bromoacrylamide or ${\alpha},{\beta}$-dibromopropionylamide group are used for wool dyeing. They are normally applied to wool under pH 4.5 to 6.5 at $100^{\circ}C$. Although wool fabric can be dyed to obtain deep colour, high light and wet fastness, the dyeing processes need long dyeing time at high temperature, with salt addition, which inevitably causes environmental problems. Grafting is a modification method for textile where monomers are covalently bonded onto the polymer chain. It can be initiated by ozone, ${\gamma}$ rays, electron beams, plasma, corona discharge and UV irradiation. Coloration by UV-induced photografting exhibits several advantages such as fast reaction rate, energy saving, simple equipment, easy exploitation and environmentally friendliness. Also it requires much lower energy compared to the conventional dyeing and less damage to the substrate. In this study, a direct sequential UV-induced photografting onto wool fabrics was discussed. To understand the graft polymerization mechanism further, several characterization methods were used. Moreover, the effects of several principal factors on the graft photopolymerization were investigated. Furthermore, the colorfastness results were compared with conventional dyeing methods.
Recently, combination of surgery and radiation therapy (RT) has been recommended in the treatment of craniopharyngioma. RT could be associated with late complications, including vasculopathy. We report two cases of the moyamoya syndrome seen in children with craniopharyngioma who received RT after surgical resection. Thirty-five patients in pediatric age with craniopharyngioma were surgically treated. Fifteen out of 35 patients underwent surgical resection followed by RT or gamma knife surgery. Two of the 15 were found to have symptoms of transient ischemic attack and were diagnosed as moyamoya syndrome through the cerebral angiography. Age at RT was 4 and 13 years, respectively. The latent period for development of the moyamoya syndrome was 27 months and 3 years, respectively, after RT. The RT dose of both patients was 54 Gy. These two patients received bilateral encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis procedures. We report here these two cases of radiation-induced moyamoya syndrome in pediatric craniopharyngioma. Pediatric patients with craniopharyngioma who received RT should be reminded, during follow-up, about the risk of development of the moyamoya syndrome.

The study presents structural integrity assessment of ductility degradation of a baffle former assembly by performing finite element analysis considering real loading conditions and stress triaxiality. Variations of fracture strain curves of type 304 austenitic stainless steel with stress triaxiality are derived based on the previous study results. Temperature distributions during normal operation such as heat-up, steady state, and cool-down are calculated via finite element temperature analysis considering gamma heating and heat convection with reactor coolant. Variations of stress and strain state during long operation period are also calculated by performing sequentially coupled temperature-stress analysis. Fracture strain is derived by using the fracture curve and the stress triaxility. Finally, variations of ductility degradation damage indicator with the fracture strain and the equivalent inelastic strain are investigated. It is found that maximum value of the ductility degradation damage index continuously increases and becomes 0.4877 at 40 EFPYs. Also, the maximum value occurs at top and middle inner parts of the baffle former assembly before and after 20 EFPYs, respectively.
A method for measuring archaeological dose of Packjae pottery shards using thermoluminescence dosimetry(TLD) has been studied. TL measurement has been achieved using quartz crystals in the size range of 90 to $125{\mu}m$ diameter extracted from the pottery shards. The stable temperature region of the TL glow curve which is devoid of anomalous fading components was identified by the plateau test and found to exist from 265 to $300^{\circ}C$. The archaeological dose of the pottery shards was estimated to be 7.43 Gy using the dose calibration curves obtained from sequential irradiation of $^{137}Cs$ gamma source to the samples and TL measurement of natural samples.
A study was carried out to establish a detection method of irradiated shellfish through thermoluminescence (TL). The TL intensity of first glow curves for irradiated bloody, freshwater, and short-neck shellfish increased from control until 5 kGy and increased slightly room 5 kGy until 10 kGy. Maximum TL temperatures of all irradiated samples tested were below 23$0^{\circ}C$, within temperature interval of 150~25$0^{\circ}C$ recommended for evaluation. Since just in control, glow curve ratios of G3 and G4 calculated from re-irradiated (1 kGy) bloody, freshwater and shortneck were over 0.5, detection in control was possible. However, as glow curve ratios after three months were below 0.5, detection by glow curve ratios after three months was impossible. Gl, which calculated from unirradiated samples, exhibited below 0.1, they were classified as unirradiated. In all samples, all the irradiated shellfish could be classified correctly as irradiated by hemaximum TL temperatures and shape of the second glow curve because those were shown in a lower temperature region than those of the first glow curve.
Thermally stimulated currents of polymers have some properties as radiation dosimetry, especially polymer could be made as a good dosimeter in biological fields because of tissue equivalent material. We experimented the radiation response of polymers and attempted to apply it in clinical use. Polymers have the properties of thermoluminescence and thermally stimulated currents which are due to several kinds of charged particles such as dipoles, electronic trapped charges and mobile ions. Several peaks are datected in the thermally stimulated currents in polyethylene under vias field V, by heating from room temperature to $100^{\circ}C$ shortly after irradiation. As V increases, both the peak temperature $T_m$ and the activation energy H decreases, while the peak current $I_m$ increases. We plotted the $T_m-V\;and\;I_m-V$ curves and calculated the electron trap depth with the recombination operative TSC theory and compared the peak TSC with radiation doses.
