  • In our former report we observed that cinnarizine influenced the antihypertensive effect of propranolol beneficially, but not of metoprolol in SHR and normal cat. Cardiac contractilities and smooth muscle relaxations induced by above drugs were measured to elucidate their mechanism of action. In cinnarizine and propranolol treated group, both of negative inotropic and ${\beta}-blocking$ activity of propranolol in perfused rat hearts were increased and propranolol induced contraction in isolated arterial and trachea smooth muscle of the guinea pig was antagonized comparing to propranolol alone treated group. However, in the cinnarizine and metoprolol treated group, no significant differences in activity on the above were observed compared to metoprolol alone treated group.

  • This study presents a development of DeCatS(Detail Design of High Speed Catenary System) which is a software to design high speed catenary system automatically. The program is developed by Korea Railroad Research Institute with the support of KHSR. A process of developing it and a comparison with LEXCAT. in order to demonstrate a preciseness of that, were performed. In the program, decision of H-beam, cantilever fitting, management of materials, automatic drawing and etc. according to input conditions can be accomplished. In this study, especially the program algorithm for the decision of mast was introduced.

Research Trends on the Thread Embedding Therapy of Obesity in Traditional Chinese Medicine (매선 비만의 중의 연구 최신 경향)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to review the thread embedding treatment studies of obesity in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Methods : We reviewed 59 studies on cat-gut-embedding treatment of obesity which were published from 2005 to 2012. The studies were searched using the data base-CAJ(China Academic Journals; 中國期刊全文數據庫)(2005~2012). Results : Selected 59 studies were divided into 27 case series and 32 control studies. The number of studies has increased since 2005, more rapidly in 2011~2012. Most case series reported were about effectiveness of thread embedding monotherapy treating obesity. Control studies reported were about effectiveness of thread embedding treatment compared with acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and medicine. Most studies on thread embedding treatment of obesity showed that its effectiveness was very good. Conclusions : There have been many reports of thread embedding treatment studies of obesity in Traditional Chinese Medicine. We believed that these studies could be applied to the clinical practice and basic research in Korea.

Identification of Isoleucine-Accepting tRNA in Maize Mitochondria

  • Maize mitochondrial tRNAs for isoleucine have been isolated using a putative $tRNA^{Ile}$ gene probe which has been previously isolated and characterized. It contains the 5'-CAT anticodon which would normally recognize the AUG methionine codon. The nucleotide sequence of one of these tRNAs has been partially determined, and contains a modified nucleotide at the first position of the anticodon. This type of posttranscriptional modification event could change the specificity of amino acid acceptance of a tRNA, unlike that deduced from the corresponding gene. An aminoacylation experiment also demonstrated that these purified tRNAs have isoleucine acceptance activity but no methionine-accepting activity.

  • Given the surge in the elderly population, and increasing in dementia cases, there is a growing interest in digital therapies that facilitate steady remote treatment. However, in the cognitive assessment of digital therapies through clinical trials, the absence of log data as an essential evaluation factor is a significant issue. To address this, we propose a solution of utilizing weighted derived variables based on high-importance variables' accuracy in log data utilization as an indirect cognitive assessment factor for digital therapies. We have validated the effectiveness of this approach using machine learning techniques such as XGBoost, LGBM, and CatBoost. Thus, we suggest the use of log data as a rapid and indirect cognitive evaluation factor for digital therapy users.

Automatic Generation of Hexahedral Meshes in Shell Structures (쉘 구조물에서 육면체 요소망의 자동 생성)

  • This paper describes hexahedral mesh generation for various shell structures, such as automobile bodies, plastic injection mold components and sheet metal parts by using chordal surfaces. After generaling one-layered tetrahedral mesh by an advancing front algorithm, the chordal surfaces are constructed by cutting of tetrahedral elements. Since the choral surfaces are composed of tri/quad elements with poor quality, they are transformed into quadrilateral elements with good quality. Hexahedral elements are then generated by offsetting these quadrilateral elements. The boundary nodes of hexahedral elements are generated on the outer surfaces of the original shell structures. Sample models including nonuniform thickness have been tested to validate the proposed algorithm.

  • CoMo, NiMo/ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared at Si/Al ratios of 100, 200 and characterized by TGA, XRD and SEM. Simultaneous hydrocracking of n-heptane and hydrodesulfurization of DBT were studied over these catalysts at the ranges of temparatures between 400$^\circ$C and 500$^\circ$C, pressure of 30 $\times 10^5$ Pa and contact time of 0.02g cat. hr/ml feed in a fixed bed flow reactor. It was shown that the hydrocracking activity of n-heptane increased in the order of NM 100, CM 100, NM 200 and CM 200 catalysts. It was also shown that the Hydrodesulfurization activity of DBT increased in the order of CM 200, NM 200, CM 100 and NM 100 catalysts and these results were thought to be that the increase of acidity of catalysts might increase hydrocracking activity of these catalysts but deactive those simultaneously. In this study it was shown that CM 100 and NM 200 were active catalysts in simultaneous hydrodesulfurization of DBT and hydrocracking of n-heptane reactions.

Protective Effect of Curcumin and Aqueous Extract of Onchengyeum on CCI4-induced Hepatotoxicity

  • An aqueous extract of oriental herbal composition named Onchengyeum and curcumin, an antioxidant isolated from turmeric (Curcuma Zonga L.) reduced hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride ($CCI_4$). Improved liver function was observed by measuring the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (CRE), total cholesterol (T-CHO), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-CHO), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-CHO), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB) and total bilirubin (BIL) in serum. Hepatic parameters monitored were levels of cholesterol (CHO), triglyceride (TG), and malondialdehyde (MDA) and activities of cytochrome P450 (CYP), NADPH-CYP reductase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). The histopathological examination showed that the treatment of Onchengyeum and curcumin relieved the ballooning degeneration of hepatocytes which had been generated by $CCI_4$. The results suggested that hepatoprotective effects of Onchengyeum and curcumin possibly are due to their promising antioxidative activity.
