To ease traffic congestion Seoul Metropolitan Government formulated the 2nd Phase of Seoul Subway Construction Scheme in 1989. The scheme calls for the construction of %60 km of subway which includes addition of 4 more subway lines and extension of 3 existing subway lines in addition to the existing 118 km of subway. As a final stage of the scheme subway line 6 is under planning and design. The line 6 is 36.1 km-long route connecting Ungam-Samgakchi-Changsin-Sinnae. Except for the depot main line wilts be underground and major construction methods are cut and cover and tunnelling. As a tunnelling method New Austrian Tunnelling Method will be adapted. The line will be opened by the end of 1997. With the completion of the line Seoul will have 278 km of subway network and the transport share by subway will be increased from 25% in 1992 to 50% in 1997.

More than sixty percentages of tunnels in the second phase of Seoul subway project have the ground coverages less than twenty meters. Majority of ground conditions encountered during turutel ling, therefore, are weathered rocks or weathered scils. Substantial lengths of tunnels are being constructed and designed running through the alluvial deposits as well. A comprehensive evaluation of current design and construction technology of Seoul subway tunnels is made with four categories such as site investigations, design concepts and methods, auxiliary measures and quality controls. Critical comments are given and some suggestions for the improvement of technology are presented.

Modern construction of tunneis and large caverns in hard rock involves high technology design and construction methods. The use of sofisticated construction equipment is also an important part of a succesful completion. Since tunnels and caverns in hard rock often is situated in urban or sub-urban areas, the construction works have to be carried out under strict control as far as vibrations and other impacts on the environment is concerned. This paper will mainty discuss modern methods and equipment for the construction of large caverns.

The environment of underground spaces might be considered in view of working environment during the construction and living environment after completion of the construction work. For controlling environment of underground space, an appropriate measures have to be taken on the governing factors such as air flow, dust, gases, heat, radiation, noise, illumination and water. The more critical matter, in underground environmental point of view, is underground disasters such as fire, gas explosion and water inrush. This paper presents the general introduction of these factors mentioned above and some outcomes of research works as of now.

This paper presents a brief but comprehensive discussion of the various advantages and disadvantages of underground facilites with a special emphasis on environmental aspects.

The paper deals with problems connected with heating and ventilation of underground premises for public use. Some properties of rock and special problems connected with designing ventilation systems for underground spaces are first briefly discussed. The rest of the paper deals with design of ventilation and heating systems. The conclusion is that there are no large problems with heating and ventiliation of underground premises, but there are still problems connected with for instance thermal properties of rock when water flows in the cracks. An optimum design demands better knowledge of these properties.

The 62 m span Olympic lee Hockey cavern in Gjovik, Norway, is located in jointed gneiss of average RaD = 70% and has a rock cover of only 25 to 50m, thus posing challenging design p problems. The investigations prior to construction included two types of stress measurements, cross-hole seismic tomography, special coe logging, Q-system classification and numerical modelling with UDEC-BB. Predicted maximum deformations were 4 to 8 mm; surprisingly small due to the high horizontal stresses recorded. Extensometer (MPBX) installations from the surface prior to construction, precision surface levelling and MPBX installed from inside the cavern give a combined measure of maximum deformations in the range 7 to 8 mm with the 62 m span fully e excavated, and three adjacent caverns for the Postal Services also completed.
