Aim & Scope

The Journal of the Society of Naval Architects of Korea provides a forum for engineers and scientists from a wide variety of disciplines to present and discuss various phenomena in the utilization and preservation of ocean environment.     Large Passenger Ferry has been delivered with a tendency of high speed since 1990´s. More than 50 ferries that exceed 25 knots in service speed are operating or under construction these days. Therefore, the hull form development for the large size ferry should be carefully carried out with some design points such as high service speed, severe criteria for stability, and complex design of appendages. This paper reviewed principal particulars and hull form characteristics of a high-speed large passenger ferry. It is also suggested the optimization method of hull form and appendages in point of resistance & propulsion performance. Finally, it is also introduced a high-speed large passenger ferry developed by Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., the key design points in hull form development.

    This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP(sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique. The wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with non-linear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of the hull surface is represented and modified using B-spline surface patches. The optimization method is applied to Series 60 hull and KCS(KRISO 3600 TEU Container Ship). The obtained results prove that the method is appropriate for preliminary hull form design.

    The very large container ships have been built recently and those ships have very small structural rigidity compared with the other conventional ships. As a result, the destruction of ship hull is occurred by the springing including to warping phenomena due to encounter waves. In this study, the solutions of hydrodynamic coefficients are obtained by solving the three dimensional source distribution method and the forward speed Green function representing a translating and pulsating source potential for infinite water depth is used to calculating the integral equation. The vessel is longitudinally divided into various sections and the added mass, wave damping and wave exciting forces of each section is calculated by integrating the dynamic pressures over the mean wetted section surface. The equations for six degree freedom of motions is obtained for each section in the frequency domain and stiffness matrix is calculated by Euler beam theory. The computations are carried out for very large ship and effects of bending and torsional ridigity on the wave frequency and angle are investigated.

    New high-speed depressurized circulating water channel was designed by using the CFD code. Flow in the channel has free surface and pressure in the test section can be depressed. In this study, Flow separation and bubble occurrence were considered in designing the contraction nozzle shape for better flow uniformity Tn the test section. To supplement velocity defect due to the free surface, nozzle injection system more effective in high-speed flow was installed instead of drum system. Necessary power and injection techniques were proposed. And guide vane arrangement was analyzed to reduce the flow resistance and keep quiet free surface from ´surging´. Wave absorber was devised to reduce the wave resistance and to prevent the entrainment of air to the diffuser.

    Lately, the cavitation and erosion phenomena in the rudder have been increased for high-speed container ships. However, cavitation is not prone to occur in model experiments because of low Reynolds number. In order to predict the cavitation phenomena, the - analysis of the viscous flow in the rudder gap is positively necessary In this study, numerical calculation was applied to the two-dimensional flow around the rudder gap using FLUENT code. The velocity and pressure field were numerically acquired and cavitation phenomena could be predicted. And the case that the round bar was installed in the rudder gap was analyzed. For reducing the acceleration force when fluid flow through the gap, modified rudder shape is proposed, It is shown that modified rudder shape restrain the pressure drop at the entrance of the gap highly both in the computational results and in the model experiment, and reduce the cavitation bubbles.

    Model tests using 2.0m model of the series 60 form( $C_{b}$= 0.6) were carried out in the Circulating Water Channel (CWC) in the Chosun University (CU, Korea) for the purpose of a correlative study with Towing Tank (TT). Resistance, propeller open water, self propulsion and wake survey tests were carried out and the results were extrapolated to the ship scale. These results were compared with the extrapolated ship values based on the model test of 7.0m model in the TT at the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO, Korea). The CWC test results were correlated with the results of the towing tank tests.s.

    In ship structures, many parts are in contact with inner or outer fluid as stern, ballast and oil tanks. Fatigue damages can be sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance. Tank structures in ships are in contact with water and the vibration characteristics are strongly affected by the added mass of containing water. Therefore it is important to predict vibration characteristics of tank structures. In order to estimate the vibration characteristics, the fluid-structure interaction problem has to be solved precisely. In the present paper, we have developed a numerical tool of vibration analysis of 3-dimensional tank structures using finite elements for plates and boundary elements for water region. To verify the present analysis, we have made an experiment for vibration characteristics of a tank with elastic opposite panels. And the added mass effect of containing water and the effect of structural constraint between panels are investigated numerically and discussed.

    Design of the corrugated watertight bulkhead for a bulk carrier is principally determined by the permissible limit of Classification requirements. As the weight of upper and lower stool has considerable portion of the total weight of the transverse bulkhead, optimum design including the stool geometry and size will play an important role on economic shipbuilding. The purpose of this study is focused on the minimization of steel weight using the design variables, which are the shape and the size of the corrugation as well as the upper and lower stools. Discrete variables are used as design variables for the practical design. In this study, the evolution strategies (ES), which can highly improve the possibility of leaching the global minimum point, are selected as an optimization method. Usefulness of this study is verified by comparison with the proven type ship design. As objective function, total weight of the transverse bulkhead including the upper and lower stools is used.

    With the fast growth of shipbuilding industry, in recent years several hundreds of thousands of lifting lugs for a year have been used. This paper is aimed at maximizing the recovering use of lifting lugs. In this study, we have evaluated the structural strength for present and modified lifting lugs under in-plane and out-of-plane load conditions. For this purpose, the equivalent stresses have been calculated by nonlinear elasto-plastic analysis using the finite element program ABAQUS. At the same time, the contact conditions between lifting lug and shackle pin are also considered.

    In non-contact underwater explosion shock test of a real naval ship, measurement of shock loadings and responses should require onboard system to be able to safely trigger an explosive and to simultaneously and successfully measure scores of shock signals in the deteriorated environment. For this purpose, we have developed a shock-hardened measurement system resistible to 170g peak acceleration having 4 msec duration by resiliently mounting general purpose measurement instruments in racks. The system can simultaneously measure and record 200 signals to evaluate shock leadings and responses of the test ship by triggering an explosive and measurement instruments at the same time. We prove the performance of the developed system by introducing the signal acquisition results from of a real ship underwater shock test, firstly performed in Korea.
