Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept and importance of pop-up libraries, which have recently been discussed as a form of library marketing, and to analyze the characteristics and operation methods of pop-up libraries in overseas libraries, and to summarize a step-by-step operation strategy that Korean libraries should consider when operating pop-up libraries in the future. Pop-up libraries are temporary libraries that rent a space for a short period of time. By setting up a temporary library in a new space in the community and providing services and resources outside of the physical space of the library, it is expected to have a positive effect of interacting with the community and local residents. We examined five pop-up libraries in Australia and the United Kingdom, including public libraries and university libraries. Finally, based on the implications drawn from the five operational cases, this paper proposes four steps for the actual operation of pop-up libraries in Korea: (1) planning, (2) preparation, (3) operation, and (4) evaluation.
