Recently, the development of renewable energy sources in Mongolia has been needed due to climate change and air pollution in Ulaanbaatar as rapid economic growth. Biodiesel can be considered as an alternative fuel for petroleum based diesel in order to decrease air pollution in Ulaanbaatar because of its no emission of particle materials from internal combustion engine in automobile. Rapeseed oil having low cloud point and pour point was suggested as a promising raw material for biodiesel production in Mongolia. Considering high population density and severe air pollution by particle materials and SOx in Ulaanbaatar, prior supplying site of biodiesel in Mongolia was the capital region including Ulaanbaatar. In the production of biodiesel in Mongolia, adsorption process was a effective alternative to washing process for the removal of residual alkali catalyst and reactants due to long winter time in Mongolia. For the stable supply of biodiesel, subsidy and no tax policy is needed in the early stage of biodiesel supply in Mongolia.
Biodiesel has great potential as an alternative fuel for diesel engines that would reduce air pollution. It is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from fresh or used vegetable oils, or from animal fats. In this study, a biodiesel fuel derived from rice bran oil was tested as an alternative fuel for agricultural diesel engines. The emissions were characterized for both neat and blended biodiesel fuels, and for conventional diesel fuel. Since this biodiesel fuel contained 11 % oxygen, it strongly influenced the combustion process. The use of biodiesel fuel resulted in lower carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and smoke emissions, without any increase in nitrous oxide emissions. The study demonstrated that biodiesel fuel could be effectively used as a renewable and environmentally innocuous fuel for agricultural diesel engines.
Because food crops serve as the raw materials for biodiesel, the increasing use of biodiesel as an alternative fuel can lead to adverse effects such as food price inflation and may contribute to global starvation. To solve these problems, efforts are being made to explore various nonedible raw materials for producing biodiesel. Different raw materials impart different fuel characteristics to biodiesel. In this study, we synthesized pure fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), which is a biodiesel component, and then analyzed its fuel properties. The fuel properties of pure FAME would be useful in producing biodiesel from various new raw materials.
Environmental pollution is produced by consumption of fossil fuel, therefore alternative fuels is interested for development of new energy resources and reduction of exhaust emissions for air pollution prevention. Biofuels are produced from new vegetable oil and animal fat, may be used as fuel without change of engine structure in diesel engine. In this paper, the test results on specific fuel consumption, combustion characteristics of neat diesel oil and biodiesel blends(10 vol.% biodiesel and 20 vol.% biodiesel) were presented using four stroke, direct injection diesel engine, especially this biodiesel was produced from biodiesel fuel at our laboratory by ourselves. This study showed that specific fuel consumption is increased slightly, on the other hand cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, rate of heat release and soot were decreased slightly in the case of biodiesel blends than neat diesel oil.
Biodiesel is a non-polluting and non-toxic energy source that can replace conventional diesel. However, the higher production cost and raw material scarcity became challenges that obstruct the commercialization of biodiesel production. In the current investigation, fried cooking oil is used for biodiesel production in a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor, thus enhancing raw material availability and helping better waste oil disposal. However, due to the cavitation effect inside the reactor, the hydrodynamic cavitation reactor can give biodiesel yield above 98%. Thus, the use of orifice plates (having a different number of holes for cavitation) in the reactor shows more than 90% biodiesel yield within 10 mins of a time interval. The effects of rising temperature at different molar ratios are also investigated. The five-hole plate achieves the highest yield for a 4.5:1 molar ratio at 65℃. And the similar result is predicted by the response surface methodology model; however, the optimized yield is obtained at 60℃. The investigation will help understand the effect of hydrodynamic cavitation on biodiesel yield at different molar ratios and elevated temperatures.
In this study, we suggested effective countermeasure of biodiesel oxidation problems by investigating the oxidation degradation of biodiesels derived from variable resources and the level of oxidation stability of current distributing biodiesel blended fuels (2%) in Korea, and oxidation stability change according to storage time (for 3 month) and biodiesel blending ratio (2, 5, 7, 10%). By the composition analysis results of biodiesel from various resources which are possible to distribute in Korea, the biodiesel from animal fat has poor oxidation stability and cold performance, while the biodiesel from coconut and palm kernel which are considered as future potential raw material showed good oxidation stability and cold performance. The oxidation stability level of current distributing biodiesel blended fuels in Korea was excellent with showing over 30 hours (average 68 hours) stability, but the oxidation stability of the blended fuel with animal fat biodiesel having poor oxidation property (1.22 hours) was rapidly decreased to below 32 hours by mixing only 2%. Therefore, we have to pay attention to quality control of oxidation property, because the oxidation stability problem can be caused by increasing biodiesel blending ratio and diversifying raw materials those have worse property.
Biodiesel fuel as an alternative fuel for diesel engine has a great possibility to solve the problems such as air pollution. It is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, used vegetable oils, or animal fats. In this study, the usability of biodiesel fuel derived from rice bran oil as an alternative fuel for diesel engines was investigated in agricultural diesel engine. Emissions were characterized with neat biodiesel fuel and with a blend of biodiesel fuel and conventional diesel fuel. Since the biodiesel fuel includes oxygen of about 11%, it could influence the combustion process strongly. So, the use of biodiesel fuel resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and smoke emissions without any increase of oxides of nitrogen. It is concluded that biodiesel fuel can be utilized effectively as a renewable and an environmentally Innocuous fuel for diesel engine.
An experimental investigation was conducted to analyze the effects of biodiesel-ethanol and biodiesel-diesel blended fuels on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions, and size distributions of particulate matter in a single cylinder diesel engine. The three types of test fuel were biodiesel and two blended fuels which were added ethanol and diesel by 20 % volume based fraction into biodiesel, respectively. In this study, the injection rate, combustion pressure, exhaust emissions and size distributions of particulate matter were measured under various injection timings and injection pressures. The experimental results show that biodiesel-ethanol blended fuel has lengthened ignition delay and low combustion pressure in comparison with those of biodiesel and biodiesel-diesel blended fuel even if all fuels indicated similar trends of injection rate under equal injection pressures. In addition, the ethanol blended fuel significantly reduced nitrogen oxidies (NOx) and soot emissions. And then the size distribution of particulate matters shows that blended fuels restrain the formation of particles which were beyond the range of 150nm comparison with biodiesel fuel.
In this work, the mixture formation and atomization characteristics of biodiesel fuel were reviewed under various test conditions for the optimization of compression-ignition engine fueled with biodiesel. To achieve these, the effect of nozzle caviting flow, group-hole nozzle geometry and injection strategies on the injection rate, spray evolution and atomization characteristics of biodiesel were studied by using spray characteristics measuring system. At the same time, the fuel heating system was installed to obtain the effect of fuel temperature on the biodiesel fuel atomization. It was revealed that cavitation in the nozzle orifice promoted the atomization performance of biodiesel. The group-hole nozzle geometry and split injection strategies couldn't improve it, however, the different orifice angles which were diverged and converged angle of a group-hole nozzle enhanced the biodiesel atomization. It was also observed that the increase of fuel temperature induced the quick evaporation of biodiesel fuel droplet.
Recently, lots of researchers have been attracted to develope various alternative fuels and to use renewable fuels as a solution of environmental problems from automobile. The use of biodiesel fuel is an effective way of substituting diesel fuel in the long nun. It is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, used vegetable oils, or animal fats. In this study, the usability of biodiesel fuel derived from rice ban oil, one of the oxygenated fuels as an alternative fuel for diesel engines was investigated in IDI diesel engine. Emissions were characterized with neat biodiesel fuel and with a blend of biodiesel fuel and conventional diesel fuel. Since the biodiesel fuel includes oxygen of about 11%, it could influence the combustion process strongly. So, the use of biodiesel fuel resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide and smoke emissions with some increase in emissions of oxides of nitrogen. It is concluded that biodiesel fuel can be utilized effectively as a renewable fuel for IDI diesel engine.
