Preparation by the double extraction process with preliminary neutron irradiation of yttria or calcia stabilised cubic zirconium dioxide microspheres

  • A modern approach to nuclear energy involves reprocessing like transmutations of spent nuclear fuel products to reduce their radiotoxicity and time needed for their storage. For this purpose, they are immobilized in inert matrices made of zirconia and can be "burned" in fast neutron reactor or Accelerator Driven System. These matrices in spherical form can be obtained by sol-gel process. The paper presents a method of microspheres fabrication based on the combined Complex Sol-Gel Process and double extraction process consisting in the preparation of zirconium-ascorbate sol and simultaneous extraction of water and nitrates. The procedure allows obtaining gel microspheres with a diameter of 50 ㎛, which after heat treatment are processed into the final product. The synthesis of zirconia microspheres with Yttrium by internal gelation process is well known for over a decade now. However, the explanation and characterization of synthesis of such material by extraction of water process is rarely found. Parameters such as: pH, viscosity, shape, sphericity and crystal structure have been determined for synthesized products and semi-products. In addition, preliminary research consisting in irradiation of the obtained materials in fast and thermal neutron flux was carried out. The obtained results are presented and described in this work.

Effect of Zirconium Dioxide in BaO-ZnO-B2O3-SiO2 system on Optical Properties of Color Conversion Glasses

  • The effect of zirconium dioxide ($ZrO_2$) on the properties of color conversion glasses was examined in the $BaO-ZnO-B_2O_3-SiO_2$ system. The difference in refractive index between glass and phosphor affect the optical properties of the color conversion glass because of light scattering. Reducing the difference in refractive index is a method to improve the luminous efficacy of color conversion glasses. As a reference, a type of glass that contains 25 mol% of each component was used. To increase the refractive index of the glass samples, the BaO content was increased from 25 to 40 mol%, and $ZrO_2$ was added at levels of 1, 3, and 5 mol%. Color conversion glasses were prepared by sintering a mixture of glass and 5 wt% $YAG:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor. As a result, the refractive index of the glass was found to be dependent on the BaO and $ZrO_2$ contents in the BaO-ZnO-$B_2O_3-SiO_2$ system. As the BaO and $ZrO_2$ contents were increased, the luminous efficacy of the color conversion glass was improved because the refractive index difference between the glass and the $YAG:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor decreased.

지대치 형태에 따른 지르코니아 코어의 변연 적합도 (Marginal Adaptation of Zirconium Dioxide Core according to the Abutment Teeth)

  • 본 연구는 시중에 널리 사용되는 치과용 지르코니아 코어를 이용하여 서로 다른 형태의 지대치를 대상으로 작업모형을 제작한 후, 치과용 스캐너를 통해 3차원 디지털 모형을 전환한 데이터를 토대로 지르코니아 코어를 제작하였으며, 각 실험군별 변연 적합도를 측정하여 비교분석하고자 하였다. 이와 같은 결과로 형태가 다른 지대치가 CAD/CAM system으로 치과 보철물 제작 시 적합도의 영향여부를 비교하였다. 제한된 조건 하에서 수행된 본 연구에서 다름과 같은 결과를 보였다. 지대치의 형태가 다른 작업모형으로 제작된 지르코니아 코어의 변연 적합도는 큰 차이가 없었다(p>0.05). 작업모형의 부위를 4등분으로 나누어 측정한 변연 적합도 또한 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 결론적으로 3종류의 다른 지대치 모두 유사한 지르코니아 코어의 변연 적합도를 보였으며, 측정된 결과는 선행연구에 비추어 볼 때 임상적으로 허용 가능한 수치($100{\sim}120{\mu}m$)를 초과하는 실험군은 없었다. 이와 같은 결과를 토대로 다른 형태의 지대치를 사용하여 제작되었더라도 지르코니아 코어의 변연 적합도에 큰 영향을 주지 않을 것으로 생각된다.

Hydroxyapatite-Zirconia Composite Thin Films Showing Improved Mechanical Properties and Bioactivity

  • Nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) films were formed at the Ti surface by a single-step microarc oxidation (MAO), and HAp-zirconia composite (HZC) films were obtained by subsequent chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of zirconia onto the HAp. Through the CVD process, zero- and one-dimensional zirconia nanostructures having tetragonal crystallinity (t-ZrO2) were uniformly distributed and well incorporated into the HAp crystal matrix to form nanoscale composites. In particular, (t-$ZrO_2$) was synthesized at a very low temperature. The HZC films did not show secondary phases such as tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) at relatively high temperatures. The most likely mechanism for the formation of the t-$ZrO_2$ and the pure HAp at the low processing temperature was proposed to be the diffusion of $Ca^{2+}$ ions. The HZC films showed increasing micro-Vickers hardness values with increases in the t-$ZrO_2$ content. The morphological features and phase compositions of the HZC films showed strong dependence on the time and temperature of the CVD process. Furthermore, they showed enhanced cell proliferation compared to the $TiO_2$ and HAp films most likely due to the surface structure change.

Correlations between Zirconium Isotopes and Burnup Parameters in PWR Spent Nuclear Fuels

  • The correlation of isotope composition of Zr with the turnup and some heavy isotopes in PWR uranium dioxide fuel has been investigated. The total and partial ($^{235}$ U) burnup were determined by $^{148Nd}$ and by U and Pu mass spectrometric method, respectively. After separating Zr from the fuel samples, its isotope composition was measured by mass spectrometry. In addition, the quantities of the U and Pu in the spent fuel were determined by isotope di lution mass spectrometric method using $^{233}$ U and $^{242}$ Pu as spikes. The content of some heavy isotopes, $^{235}$ U, $^{239}$ Pu and $^{241}$ Pu, and the Pu Contribution to total turnup were expressed by the correlation with Zr isotope ratios, $^{91}$ Zr/$^{96}$ Zr and $^{93}$ Zr/$^{96}$ Zr The correlations by isotope compositions measured were compared wi th those calculated from ORIGEN2 code.

한외여과 공정에 의한 알로에 베라 겔 농축 (Concentration of Fresh Gel from Aloe vera L. by Using Ultrafiltration Process)

  • The concentration of fresh gel from Aloe vera L. by using ulfrafiltration (UF) process was investigated and analyzed. The two membranes (organic and ceramic) with different molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) and modules (flat sheet and tubular) was used. Under optimum operation conditions, ceramic (zirconium dioxide) tubular membrane with MWCO of 50 kDa resulted in higher flux, less fouling, more turbid, higher total solid, higher polysaccharide and less aloin content. Optimum operation conditions were transmembrane pressure of 1.0 bar, feed velocity of 240 L/hr and temperature of $23^{\circ}C$. Volume concentration factor of aloe gel was 3.13 at permeate flux of $51.1\;L/m^2{\cdot}hr$ after processing time of 1.66 hr. Aloin in fresh aloe gel by UF process was effectively removed as permeate and bioactive polysaccharide content was 2.1 times higher than that of fresh aloe gel. These results allowed a very good level of concentration degree and polysaccharide content. Thus, ultrafiltration process of this study was suitable for the concentration of fresh aloe gel though the aloe concentrate showed both the viscosity decrease and partially separation of liquid layer during storage at $4^{\circ}C$.

Bi-electrolyte Carbon Dioxide Gas Sensor Based on Paste Sodium-Beta Alumina and Yttria-stabilized Zirconia

  • $CO_2$ sensor was used only one solid electrolyte in many cases. To improve the sensing characteristics of $CO_2$ sensors, solid electrolyte $CO_2$ sensor has been developed by bi-electrolyte type sensor using Na-Beta-alumina and YSZ. However, in many further studies, bi-electrolyte type sensor was made by pellet pressed by press machine and additional treatment for formation of interface. In the aspect of mass production, using thick film and additional treatment is not suitable. In this study, $CO_2$ sensor was fabricated by bi-electrolyte structure which was made by an NBA paste layer deposited on YSZ pellet and fired at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour. The formation of stable interface between YSZ and NBA were confirmed by SEM image. When the type IV electrochemical cell arrangement represented by $CO_2,O_2,Pt{\mid}Li_2CO_3-CaCO_3{\parallel}NBA{\parallel}YSZ{\mid}O_2,Pt$ is used to measure the $CO_2$ concentration in air. This sensor EMF should depend only on the concentration of $CO_2$ by logarithmic. Also, sensor shows $P_{CO_2}$ and EMF relationship like nerstian reaction at a temperature of $450^{\circ}C$.

핵연료 펠릿의 X-선 단층촬영 기반 시뮬레이션 타당성 해석 (X-Ray Tomography Based Simulation Feasibility Analysis of Nuclear Fuel Pellets)

  • 원자력발전소에서 사용되고 있는 연료봉은 지르코늄 합금 튜브에 동봉되어 있는 이산화우라늄 펠릿으로 구성되어 있다. 펠릿 표면은 원자로를 가동시키는 동안 국부 핫스팟을 예방하기 위해 튜브로 장전된 후 작은 구멍, 균열, 칩핑 결함이 없어야 한다. 본 논문은 X-선 단층촬영 시뮬레이션을 통하여 핵 연료봉 펠릿의 표면 결함을 검출하기 위한 타당성을 조사하였다. 병렬과 팬빔 여과후 역투영 방법을 이용하여 재구성된 영상은 시뮬레이션 데이터와 MPS(missing pellet surface) 영상데이터의 접근성을 확인하였다.

  • Ultra-thin $SiO_2/ZrO_2$ dielectrics were deposited by atomic layer chemical vapor deposition (ALCVD) method for non-volatile memory application. Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors were fabricated by stacking ultra-thin $SiO_2$ and $ZrO_2$ dielectrics. It is found that the tunneling current through the stacked dielectric at the high voltage is lager than that through the conventional silicon oxide barrier. On the other hand, the tunneling leakage current at low voltages is suppressed. Therefore, the use of ultra-thin $SiO_2/ZrO_2$ dielectrics as a tunneling barrier is promising for the future high integrated non-volatile memory.

Development and validation of diffusion based CFD model for modelling of hydrogen and carbon monoxide recombination in passive autocatalytic recombiner

  • In water-cooled power reactor, hydrogen is generated in case of steam zirconium reaction during severe accident condition and later on in addition to hydrogen; CO is also generated during molten corium concrete interaction after reactor pressure vessel failure. Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners (PARs) are provided in the containment for hydrogen management. The performance of the PARs in presence of hydrogen and carbon monoxide along with air has been evaluated. Depending on the conditions, CO may either react with oxygen to form carbon dioxide (CO2) or act as catalyst poison, reducing the catalyst activity and hence the hydrogen conversion efficiency. CFD analysis has been carried out to determine the effect of CO on catalyst plate temperature for 2 & 4% v/v H2 and 1-4% v/v CO with air at the recombiner inlet for a reported experiment. The results of CFD simulations have been compared with the reported experimental data for the model validation. The reaction at the recombiner plate is modelled based on diffusion theory. The developed CFD model has been used to predict the maximum catalyst temperature and outlet species concentration for different inlet velocity and temperatures of the mixture gas. The obtained results were used to fit a correlation for obtaining removal rate of carbon monoxide inside PAR as a function of inlet velocity and concentrations.
