Synthesis of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Powder with Rare Earth Using Oxalate Method (옥살산법을 이용하여 희토류를 첨가한 안정화 지르코니아 분말 합성)

  • The traditional yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) used in thermal barrier coatings has a limited operating temperature owing to densification and volume changes at high temperatures. A $(La_{1-x}Y_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ sintered compound was prepared by the co-precipitation and oxalate methods, by adding lanthanum zirconate to yttria. The thermal properties and crystallinity obtained by the two different methods were compared. Both methods yielded pyrochlore structures, and the oxalate method confirmed phases at low temperatures. The thermal conductivity of the sintered bulk prepared by co-precipitation was 0.93 W/mK, while that prepared by the oxalate method was 0.85 W/mK. These values are superior to that of 4YSZ at $1,000^{\circ}C$, which is widely used in industries.

Optimum Conditions for Growing Gem-quality Colorless Cubic Zirconia (보석용 무색 큐빅 저코니아의 최적 육성 조건)

  • A gem-quality yttria-stabilized zirconium oxide crystals were synthesized by the skull-melting method, using the RF electrical apparatus. Principal raw materials used were $ZrO_2$and 25 wt.% $Y_2O_3$as stabilizer and 0.03~0.05 wt.% $Nd_2O_3$decolorizing agent were added to it. The single crystals were approximately 20$\times$63 mm in size with chemical composition $Zr_{0.73}$ $Y_{0.27}$ $O_{1.87}$ . The crystals are isotropic with no appreciable anisotropism under a polarizing microscope. Their refractive indices are in the range of 2.15~2.18, specific gravity 5.85, Mohs' hardness 8~8.5, and reflectivity 13.47%. The zirconia crystals were confirmed to have cubic structure with Face-centered lattice(Z=4), space group Fm3m ($CaF_2$-type structure) and unit cell parameters are a=5.157 $\AA$. The optimal growing conditions for yttria-stabilized zirconia are 50 kW, 2.94 MHz in power and to use a crucible with 105 mm $\times$ 135 mm in size. When the lowering speed of the crucible was set 16mm/hr gave the best yield, 42%. Since the refractive index(2.15~2.18) of cubic zirconia is smaller than that of diamond, the angle between crown and pavilion should be fashioned to make it smaller than $40.5^{\circ}$ to show the maximum brilliancy and fire.

  • This paper demonstrates the successful application of yttria-stabilized zirconia thin films deposited by atomic layer deposition to the anode-side interlayer for cerium oxide electrolyte based solid oxide fuel cell. At the operating temperature over $500^{\circ}C$, the electrical conductivity of cerium oxide electrolyte is known to dramatically increase and, therefore, the open circuit voltage of the cell decreases leading to the decrease of the performance. Ultra-thin (60 nm) atomic layer deposited yttria-stabilized zirconia thin film in this study conformally coated the anode-side surface of the cerium oxide electrolyte and efficiently blocked the electrical conduction through the electrolyte. Accordingly, the open circuit voltage increased by up to 20%, and the maximum power density increased by 52% at $500^{\circ}C$

Absence of Distinctively High Grain-Boundary Impedance in Polycrystalline Cubic Bismuth Oxide

  • In this work, we studied a fluorite structure oxides: Yttria stabilized zirconia, (YSZ); Gd doped $CeO_2$ (GDC); erbia stabilized $Bi_2O_3$ (ESB); Zr doped erbia stabilized $Bi_2O_3$ (ZESB); Ca doped erbia stabilized $Bi_2O_3$ (CESB) in the temperature range of 250 to $600^{\circ}C$ using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). As is well known, grain boundary blocking effect was observed in YSZ and GDC. However, there is no grain boundary effect on ESB, ZESB, and CESB. The Nyquist plots of these materials exhibit a single arc at low temperature. This means that there is no space charge effect on ${\delta}-Bi_2O_3$. In addition, impedance data were analyzed by using the brick layer model. We indirectly demonstrate that grain boundary ionic conductivity is similar to or even higher than bulk ionic conductivity on cubic bismuth oxide.

Comparative analysis on intaglio surface trueness, wear volume loss of antagonist, and fracture resistance of full-contour monolithic zirconia crown for single-visit dentistry under simulated mastication

  • PURPOSE. This analysis aimed to evaluate the intaglio surface trueness, antagonist's wear volume loss, and fracture resistance of full-contour crowns of (Y, Nb)-stabilized fully-sintered zirconia (FSZ), 4 mol% or 5 mol% yttria-stabilized partially sintered zirconia (4YZ or 5YZ) with high-speed sintering. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 42 zirconia crowns were separated into three groups: FSZ, 4YZ, and 5YZ (n = 14). The intaglio surface trueness of the crowns was evaluated at the inner surface, occlusal, margin, and axial areas and reported as root-mean-square, positive and negative average deviation. Half of the specimens were aged for 120,000 cycles in the chewing simulator, and the wear volume loss of antagonist was measured. Before and after chewing, the fracture load was measured for each group. The trueness values were analyzed with Welch's ANOVA, and the wear volume loss with the Kruskal-Wallis tests. Effect of the zirconia type and aging on fracture resistance of crowns was tested using two-way ANOVA. RESULTS. The intaglio surface trueness measured at four different areas of the crown was less than 50 ㎛, regardless of the type of zirconia. No significant P in wear volume loss of antagonists were detected among the groups (P > .05). Both the type of zirconia and aging showed statistically significant effects on fracture resistance (P < .05). CONCLUSION. The full-contour crowns of FSZ as well as 4YZ or 5YZ with high-speed sintering were clinically acceptable, in terms of intaglio surface trueness, antagonist's wear volume loss, and fracture resistance after simulated mastication.

Properties of Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia Nano-Powders Prepared by Coprecipitation Method (공침법으로 합성한 이트리아 부분안정화 지르코니아 나노분말의 특성)

  • The Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia powder was prepared by spontaneous precipitation method using $ZrOCl_2{\cdot}8H_O-YCl_33{\cdot}6H_2O$ solution as a starting materials. The optimal experimental conditions such as concentration and pH of starting solutions, the amounts of stabilizer $Y_2O_3$ used, and sintered temperature were carefully studied. The best condition for synthesizing $ZrO_2$ was experimentally selected and applied throughout this study for the preparation of the 3 mole% $Y_2O_3$ partially stabilized zirconia, 3YSZ. The physical properties of 3YSZ was examined by XRD, Raman, DT A, and SEM. The structural transition from pure monoclinic high temperature $ZrO_2$ to tetragonal room temperature 3YSZ was made possible by the added amount of $Y_2O_3$ in the $ZrO_2+Y_2O_3$ system. All Raman Spectrum band appeared in the lower wave numbers rather than in higher wave numbers as structure changes from monoclinic to tetragonal.

Synthesis of YSZ Thin Films by PECVD (PECVD에 의한 YSZ(Yttria Stabilized Zirconia)박막 제조)

  • A Abstract Yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) thin films were synthesized by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process. $Zr[TMHD]_4$ $Y[TMHD]_3$ precursors and oxygen were used with the deposition temperature of $425^{\circ}C$ and rf power ranging 0-100 watt. Effects of the deposition parameters were studied by X-ray diffraction and thickness anal­ysis. YSZ thin films have cubic crystal structure with (200) orientation. From the results of EDX analysis, the converte ed content of TEX>$Y_2O_3$ was determined to be 0-36%, and the film thickness was increased with bubbling temperature which is considered to be due to increasing TEX>$Y_2O_3$ flux. The depth profiles of Zr, Y and 0 appeared relatively $\infty$nstant through film thickness. Columnar grains of $1000~2000\AA$ grew vertical to the substrate surface for the case of Ar carri­er gas. In case of He carrier gas, the grain size was observed to be about $1000~2000\AA$. X-ray diffraction data showed the increase of lattice constant with TEX>$Y_2O_3$ content. It was that the presence of the cracks formed during film deposition, partially released the stress generated by the increase of lattice constant.

  • The plasma-sprayed 8%Y$_2$O$_3$-Zirconia coating was studied to know the relationship between phase transformation and wear properties after several heat treatment. Wear tests were carried out with ball on disk on 50N, 70N, 90N. The specimen in this study was cast iron and tests were performed on room temperature. The transformation of phase and residual stress was measured by x-ray diffraction method(XRD) and worn surface were observed by SEM.

  • The effect of SiO2 addition on sintering characteristics of 8 mole percent yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics is investigated. As the addition of SiO2 is increased, sinterbility, microstructure, and Vickers hardness of the zirconia ceramic increased but fracture toughness and electrical conductivity are decreased. It is considered that the electrical conductivity decrease with the increase of SiO2 is due to the decrease of defect concentration of ionized oxygen. From the complex impedance measurement, it is shown that the influence of SiO2 is more dominant at the resistivity of bulk region than of grain boundary region.

  • Electrochemical promotion of the reaction rate was investigated for CO oxidation in a solid electrolyte catalytic reactor where a thin film of Pt was deposited on the yttria stabilized zirconia as an electrode as well as a catalyst. It was shown under open circuit condition that potential was a mixed potential of $O_2$exchange reaction and electrochemical reaction induced by CO. The effect of electrochemical modification on the CO oxidation rate was studied at various overpotentials and $P_{CO}$$P_{O2}$.
