  • We present an updated version of the multilayer spectral inversion (MLSI) recently proposed as a technique to infer the physical parameters of plasmas in the solar chromosphere from a strong absorption line. In the original MLSI, the absorption profile was constant over each layer of the chromosphere, whereas the source function was allowed to vary with optical depth. In our updated MLSI, the absorption profile is allowed to vary with optical depth in each layer and kept continuous at the interface of two adjacent layers. We also propose a new set of physical requirements for the parameters useful in the constrained model fitting. We apply this updated MLSI to two sets of Hα and Ca II line spectral data taken by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) from a quiet region and an active region, respectively. We find that the new version of the MLSI satisfactorily fits most of the observed line profiles of various features, including a network feature, an internetwork feature, a mottle feature in a quiet region, and a plage feature, a superpenumbral fibril, an umbral feature, and a fast downflow feature in an active region. The MLSI can also yield physically reasonable estimates of hydrogen temperature and nonthermal speed as well as Doppler velocities at different atmospheric levels. We conclude that the MLSI is a very useful tool to analyze the Hα line and the Ca II 8542 line spectral daya, and will promote the investigation of physical processes occurring in the solar photosphere and chromosphere.

  • In the previous study, 141 $BC_3F_2$ lines from a cross between the Oryza sativa cv. Milyang 23 and O. glaberrima were used to identify favorable wild QTL alleles for yield component traits. In this study, we carried out QTL analysis of four grain morphology as well as four yield component traits using 141 $BC_3F_5$ lines from the same cross and compared QTLs detected in two different generations. The mean number of O. glaberrima segments in the 141 $BC_3F_5$ lines ranged from 1 to 13 with 2.69 and 5.71 of the average means of homozygous and heterozygous segments, respectively. There was a three-fold difference in the number of QTLs detected for four traits commonly evaluated in two generations (seven QTLs in the $BC_3F_5$ vs 21 in the $BC_3F_2$ population). The percentages of the phenotypic variance explained by QTLs in the BC3F5 population were similar to or less than those in the $BC_3F_2$ population. This is probably due to the difference in the genetic composition of two populations and the environmental effects. The locations of the QTLs commonly detected in both generations were in good agreement except for one QTL for spikelets per panicle. The yield QTL, yd3 was colocalized with the spikelets per panicle, spp3. Yield increase at this locus is due to the increase in spikelets per panicle, because both traits were associated with increase in spikelets per panicle and yield due to the presence of an O. glaberrima allele. Clusters of QTLs for grain morphology traits were observed in two chromosome regions. One cluster harboring five QTLs near SSR markers RM106 and RM263 was detected on chromosome 2. This population would serve as a foundation for development of the introgression line population from a cross between Milyang 23 and O. glaberrima.

  • AT-hook proteins of plant have shown to be involved in growth and development through the modification of chromatin architecture to co-regulate transcription of genes. Recently, many genes encoding AT-hook protein have been identified and their involvement in senescence delay is investigated. In this study, soybean transgenic plants overexpressing chromatin architecture-controlling ATPG7 gene was produced by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and investigated for the positive effect on the important agronomic traits mainly focusing on yield-related components. A total of 27 transgenic soybean plants were produced from about 400 explants. $T_1$ seeds were harvested from all transgenic plants. In the analysis of genomic DNAs from soybean transformants, ATPG7 and Bar fragments were amplified as expected, 975 bp and 408 bp in size, respectively. And also exact gene expression was confirmed by reverse transcriptase-PCR (RT-PCR) from transgenic line #6, #7 and #8. In a field evaluation of yield components of ATPG7 transgenic plants ($T_3$), higher plant height, more of pod number and greater average total seed weight were observed with statistical significance. The results of this study indicate that the introduction of ATPG7 gene in soybean may have the positive effect on yield components.

  • Objective: Apart from various climatic differences, corn harvest stage and varieties are two major factors that can influence the yield and quality of corn silage in the tropics. A study was conducted to determine the optimum harvest stage of four corn varieties for silage production in Malaysia. Methods: Corn was harvested at four growth stages; silking, milk, dough, and dent stages from four varieties; Sweet Corn hybrid 926, Suwan, breeding test line (BTL) 1 and BTL 2. Using a split plot design, the treatments were then analysed based on the plant growth performance, yield, nutritive and feeding values followed by a financial feasibility study for potential commercialization. Results: Significant differences and interactions were detected across the parameters suggesting varying responses among the varieties towards the harvest stages. Sweet Corn was best harvested early in the dough stage due to high dry matter (DM) yield, digestible nutrient, and energy content with low fibre portion. Suwan was recommended to be harvested at the dent stage when it gave the highest DM yield with optimum digestible nutrient and energy content with low acid detergent fibre. BTL 1 and BTL 2 varieties can either be harvested at dough or dent stages as the crude protein, crude fibre, DM yield, DM content, digestible nutrient and energy were not significantly different at either stage. Further financial analysis showed that only Sweet Corn production was not financially feasible while Suwan had the best financial appraisal values among the grain varieties. Conclusion: In conclusion, only the grain varieties tested had the potential for silage making according to their optimum harvest stage but Suwan is highly recommended for commercialization as it was the most profitable.

  • The stator faults yield asymmetrical operation of induction machines, such as irregular current, torque pulsation, increased losses and decreased average torque. So it is necessary to detect the stator faults and develope the monitoring system for detecting faults including vibration and noise. This paper describes the method to analysis the induction motors with the stator winding inter-turn short for investigation of the asymmetrical operation during normal and transient states. And a simple method is used for the simulation and analysis of the induction machines with stator asymmetries. Finally, simulation results, finite element analysis and experimental ones are presented. The results can be useful for real-time on-line monitoring of an induction motor.

  • We studied the charge redistribution in the Pt-M (M=Cu, Co) alloys by X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy(XANES) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS). These analysis tools provide us information about the charge transfer in the valence band of intermetallic bonding. The samples were prepared by arc-melting method. After annealing this samples in vacuum for several hours, we cold get the ordered samples, which were confirmed with XRD analysis. the core and valence level energy shift in these system were investigated by Mg $K\alpha$(1253.6eV) x-ray source for Pt-Co alloys and monochromatized Al $K\alpha$ (1486.6eV) for Pt-Cu alloys. Pt L2, L3-edge, and Cu, Co K-edge XANES spectra were measured with the total electron-yield mode detector at the 3Cl beam line of the PLS (Pohang light source0. from the changes of White line (WL) area and the core level shifts of the each metal sites, we can obtain the information about the electrons participating in the intermetallic bonding of the Pt-Cu and Pt-Co alloys.

  • Although a structural analysis based on e linear elastic theory yields good results for deformations and stresses produced by working loads, it fails to assess the teal load-carrying of the plates on the verge of yielding. In case of a limit analysis of plates, the yield line theory is widely used on the basis of the upper bound theorem and theoretically it overestimates the strength of the plate. There is, therefore, a general need for analytical methods of predicting the inelastic behavior and load-carrying capacities of plate subjected to arbitrary loadings and boundary conditions. The $\rho$-version of finite element method has been presented for determining the accurate limit load of plates. The numerical results by $\rho$-version model compares with the results obtained by the h-version software ADINA as well as with the available analytical solutions in literatures.

  • For urban watershed models, the ILLUDAS and SWMM are the popular rainfall-runoff models used in Korea. However, combined sewage systems in urban areas produced problems when a flood occured because of the surcharged precipitation amount which drained to the streams directly. Also, the lack of pipe line data and the difficulties of modeling yield inappropriate modeling results in urban runoff analysis. In addition, rainfall-runoff models in urban areas which use channel routing could have inaccurate and complicated processes. In this paper, the MIKE SWMM model has been applied for the stable runoff analysis of urban areas. Watershed and pipe line data were established by using past inundated records, DEM data, and the numerical pipe line data. For runoff modelings, the runoff block was adapted to a basin and the Extran block using dynamic equations was applied to the sewage system. After comparing to models that exist, it is concluded that the MIKE SWMM model produces reliable and consistence results without distorting the Parameters of the model.

  • Comparative analyses of canopy structure were conducted using newly bred high yield rice cultivars (IR 667-Suwon 213 and 214) and commercial varieties (Jinhung and Paldal) under the field condition. "Canopy score" as criteria of canopy structure was proposed. The results were summerized as follows: 1. IR667 line (IR8${\times}$Taichung Native 1${\times}$Yukara) showed lower canopy height, greater tiller openness, smaller leaf openness and leaf length ratio (flag leaf/3rd), shorter 4th and 5th internode length, greater diameter of 5th internode, consequently greater leaf area index, panicle weight and leaf weight ratio (leaf/leaf sheathculm) as merits, and greater leaf width, smaller leaf number(number of leaf/$m^2$)and specific leaf area($cm^2/g$) and faster destruction of canopy by senescence as demerits comparing with commercial varieties. 2. IR 667 line showed much higher "Canopy score", subsequently higher yield. 3. The quality of individual leaf was better in the commercial varieties indicating that the best combination for the better yield would be the leaf of commercial varieties with the structure of IR667 line.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of concrete-filled steel tubular column-H beam connections with exterior stiffeners. As a preliminary test, simple tensile test on the column to H-beam flange connections stiffened were conducted The paramaters of tensile test are the thickness(T=9, 12, 15m) and the width(W=50, 75, 100, 150mm) of exterior stiffeners. The simple tensile test were conducted to 7 kinds of specimens. Estimating the load, displacement, and strain from each kind, results of simple tensile test were compared with results of second test. On the basis of simple tensile test, test on the column to H-km connections stiffened with the sames under monotonic and cyclic load were conducted. Specimens of 5 for the second experiment were made. In analysis, comparing each strengthes and stiffnesses we estimated deformation capacity. Comparing and estimating each yielding strength ratios and maxium-strength ratios on the basis of yield line theory, new strength formula of beam-to-column connections was suggested.
