  • To develop the methodology of the quantitative analysis of saponin in ginseng milk, conditions of the saponin extraction were optimized using the fractional factorial design with 3 variables and 3 levels by a RSM computer program. The extraction of saponin increased with an increase in extraction temperature up to $90^{\circ}C$ and then decreased significantly at $100^{\circ}C$. Extraction time affected the saponin yield in a similar trend. On the other hand, decreasing cooling temperature increased the amount of the saponin extracted. Recovery yield of the saponin from ginseng milk varied from 70.0% to 92.9%. The optimum extraction temperature, time and cooling temperature determined by partial differentiation of the model equation were $86^{\circ}C$, 2.83 hrs and $4^{\circ}C$, respectively. Key words Ginseng milk, saponin, response surface methodology.

  • Several aromatic optically active polyamides (PA)s were synthesized from 5-(2-phthalimidiylpropanoylamino)isophthalic acid with various aromatic diamines via direct polycondensation with triphenyl phosphite and pyridine in the presence of calcium chloride and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone under microwave irradiation and conventional heating conditions. Under the optimized conditions, the reaction mixture was irradiated for 2 min. with a 100% irradiation power (900 W). The resulting polymers were obtained in high yield and moderate inherent viscosity ranging from 0.35 to 0.60 dL/g. All synthesized polymers showed excellent solubility in amide-type solvents. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a 10% weight loss temperature and char yield at $600^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere of > $350^{\circ}C$ and > 58%, respectively, which suggests that the resulting PAs have good thermal stability.

  • Purpose: Self-sufficiency in paper production is desired in Nigeria. This study was aimed at evaluating the performance of a locally fabricated batch pulp digester. Methods: The pulp yields of sheaths generated as waste in the production of bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) laminates were determined at different liquor concentrations and treatment time after preliminary experiments to ascertain the conditions under which the sheath started to pulp. Moreover, the optimum pulping conditions and fiber characteristics were determined and estimated, respectively, to ascertain the pulp fiber suitability for paper production. Results: An optimum pulp yield of 65.1% was obtained at 50% NaOH and 25% $Na_2S$ liquor concentration (w/w) when the cooking time was 4 h. The results of fiber characterization of the pulp indicated an average fiber length of 2.19 mm with a low Runkel ratio of 1.63, both of which signify the suitability of the pulp for medium quality paper production. Conclusions: Softwood pulp can be blended with the fibers to improve the strength of the produced paper; further investigation should be carried out to use other non-woody plants for pulp and papermaking.

  • Identifying the available water resources amount is an essential process in establishing a sustainable water resources management plan. Dam facility is a major infrastructure storing and supplying water during the dry season, and the water supply yield of the dam varies depending on dam inflow conditions or operation rule. In South Korea, water supply yield of dam is calculated by reservoir simulation based on observed historical dam inflow data. However, the water supply capacity of a dam can be underestimated or overestimated depending on the existence of historical drought events during the simulation period. In this study, probabilistic inflow data was generated and used to estimate the appropriate range of the water supply yield of hydropower dams. That is, a method for estimating the probabilistic dam inflow that fluctuates according to climatic and socio-economic conditions and the range of water supply yield for hydropower dams was presented, and applied to hydropower dams located in the Han river in South Korea. It is expected that the understanding water supply yield of the hydropower dams will become more important to respond to climate change in the future, and this study will contribute to national water resources management planning by providing potential range of water supply yield of hydropower dams.

  • The experimental study has been done for two kinds of pelletized RDFs to Investigate the carbonization effect to the chlorine concentrations, the heating value and the yield of Produced char in variable conditions of the carbonizing temperature and reaction time. One(RDF-1) is made of 100% wasted plastics and the other(RDF-2) is made of 60% wasted paper with 40% wasted plastics. The screw type carbonizer heated Indirectly by oil burner was used for the experiment and RDF feeding rate was 3kg/hr. The carbonizing temperature was 300, 350 400 and $45^{\circ}C$ and the reaction tine was 5, 10 and 15 minutes respectively. As the increase of carbonizing reaction time and temperature, the chlorine reduction rate was increased and oppositely the yield of char was decreased At the temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 10 minutes the chlorine reduction rate was 60% and the char yield rate was 80% for the RDF-1 and those of RDF-2 were 80% and 75%, respectively. Additional activation experiment to the char produced from RDF-2 was done in the activation reactor by hot steam supply. As the increase of activation time the iodine number was increased. At the activation time of 20 minutes the iodine number was 552mg/g and the yield of activated carbon was 16%.

  • Experimental and numerical analysis has been carried out in this paper to understand correlation between volume and yield of cellular bulkhead. It was firstly confirmed from these results that the conditions and parameters considered in the finite element analysis were reasonable and realistic due to the fact that the yield loads determined by the two different methods were equivalent in actual. Based on this results, a series of intensive numerical analysis has been further performed and revealed that the yield load varied in direct proportion to the change in the volume of the cellular bulkhead.

  • 'This experiment was canied out to investigate the effects of endophyte status(end0phyte-free and -infect) and cutting frequency(3, 4, 5 and 6 timeslyear) on the agronomic characteristics, DM yield and weed development of tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) at the Experimental Field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, Suweon, from 1993 to 1994. 'Ihe results obtained are summarized as follows: DM yield of endophyte-infected tall fescue was slightly higher than that of endophyte-free tall fescue. DM yield of two tall fescue varieties was significantly decreased with frequent culting(p<0.05). Weed development of pasture tended to be decreased with endophyte-infected tall fescue and infrequent cutting, and endophyte-infected tall fescue had a good adaptation to the poor environment. Based on the results of this experiment, it is suggested that a slight increase in forage yield could be obtained from endophyte-infected tall fescue and endophyte-infected tall fescue was more persistant than endophyte-free tall fescue under poor conditions.

  • First lactation records of 683 Murrah buffaloes maintained at NDRI, Karnal which were progeny of 84 sires used for comparing the heritability estimates of age at first calving, first lactation milk yield and first service period under single and multiple trait models using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method of estimation under an individual animal model. The results indicated that the heritability estimates may vary under single and multiple trait models depending upon the magnitude of genetic and environmental correlation among the traits being considered. Therefore, a single or multiple trait model is recommended for estimation of variance components depending upon the goal of breeding programme. However, there may not be any advantage of considering a trait with zero or near zero heritability and having no or very low genetic correlation with other traits in the model. Lower heritability estimates of part lactation yield (120-day milk yield) implied that there may not be any advantage of considering this trait in place of actual 305-day milk yield, whereas, comparable heritability estimates of predicted 305-day milk yield suggested that it could be used for sire evaluation to reduce the cost of milk recording under field conditions.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate different herbicides in corn-soybean intercropping for optimum growth, yield and nutritive value of forage under Korean environment conditions. Herbicidal treatments were randomly applied over five plots, viz. (1) Control treatment: no herbicide; (2) Alachlor; (3) Simazine; (4) Pendimethalin and (5) Mixture of alachlor and simazine herbicides in RCBD have three replications. Results depicted that treated herbicides exhibited significant effect over control of weeds. Simazine herbicide alone or mixed with alachlor had adverse effects on soybean but enhanced (p<0.05) corn production in terms of survivability, dry matter and digestible nutrients yield. Corn-soybean coupling and total dry matter yield were greater (p<0.05) in pendimethalin. Simazine-alachlor mixture reduced (p<0.05) soybean height. Conclusively, simazine could not be suitable for corn soybean intercropping because of having an adverse effect on soybean component. Pendimethalin could maintain growth and yield of corn and soybean both components. Effect of alachlor was comparable to that of pendimethalin.
