Convergent Factors Related to Depression of Wage Workers in Korea: Focusing on Gender Differences (한국 임금근로자의 우울과 관련된 융복합적 요인: 성별 차이를 중심으로)

  • This research was conducted to investigate the prevalence of depression and convergent factors related to depression in male and female wage workers. Using data from the 2014 and 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 3,763 adults (1,888 males, 1,875 females) between the ages of 19 and under 65 were analyzed. Depression was measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and the depression (PHQ-9≥10) of all workers was 4.1% (3.2% for men, 5.0% for women). Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the depressive factors of male and female wage workers. In male workers, work-related characteristics such as employment type and working hours per week were found to be significantly related to depression even after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics, health-related characteristics, and life style characteristics. However, in female workers, work-related characteristics did not expose a significant relationship, showing a difference from male workers. Therefore it is necessary to develop and implement workplace counselling or mental health promotion programs that take into account the gender characteristics of depression risk factors. Also, as health-related characteristics (diagnosis of depression, suicide plan, perceived stress level, unmet medical services, self-rated health status) were found to be related to depression for both male and female workers, continuous management of these factors is required.

  • Korea Post service provides public services to the public, including mail, deposits, and insurance. The work of the postal activities is labor-intensive and physically intensive. Postal workers are exposed to the risk of injury and musculoskeletal disorders, and delivery workers are exposed to the risk of traffic accidents. The Postal Service Headquarters has strengthened safety and health activities to improve hazardous risk factors in the field. In addition, we are promoting activities to spread safety culture continuously. However, it is difficult to determine whether these activities were applied well to the site of the affiliated institution, and it is not known whether they were effective in preventing safety accidents. In addition, there is no objective evaluation system, so the current level of safety and health and problems related to workplace safety and health cannot be identified. Therefore, in this study, we tried to prepare basic data to propose an evaluation system, standard, and evaluation index suitable for the postal business so that the safety level of the public postal business can be evaluated efficiently and objectively. In other words, it was intended to analyze the characteristics of the public postal business and prepare the basis for the development of evaluation indicators considering it, and through this, an effective level evaluation can be performed and problems in safety and health management by institution can be identified.

The Effect of Metabolic syndrome Management Program Applying Participatory Action-Oriented Training Principle (참여형 개선기법(PAOT)의 원리를 적용한 대사증후군 관리 프로그램 효과분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to apply participatory action-oriented training (PAOT) principle for the management of metabolic syndrome and to assess its effectiveness in the workplace. Methods: The metabolic syndrome management program applying participatory action-oriented training (PAOT) principle is constructed action checklist, Group discussion, self-creation of an action plan, after 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, the practice carried out check up and encourage practice activity. Results: The seventy-seven workers who participated in the metabolic syndrome management program made a total of 246 action plans, 3.8 action plans per person and 234 action plans were achieved after one year, so that 81.0% of action plans have been achieved. After 1 year, in the intervention group, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body mass index (BMI), the risk factors score decreased statistically significant, and metabolic syndrome prevalence decreased 54.8%. whereas the control group also showed a significant decreased in the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure, the risk factors score. but, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) was significantly increased. Conclusions: To improve the effectiveness of metabolic syndrome management program applying participatory action-oriented training (PAOT) principle, the need to continues implementing programs and analysis of the long-term effects are required. Participatory action-oriented training (PAOT) principle can applying without cost and time, the human burden for the prevention and management of chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome.

Effectiveness of worksite-based dietary interventions on employees' obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to provide scientific evidence on the effectiveness of worksite-based dietary intervention to reduce obesity among overweight/obese employees. MATERIALS/METHODS: Electronic search was performed using Ovid Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases. The keywords used were "obesity," "nutrition therapy," and "worksite." The internal validity of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was assessed using the Cochrane's Risk of Bias. Meta-analysis of selected studies was performed using Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS: A total of seven RCTs with 2,854 participants were identified. The effectiveness of dietary interventions was analyzed in terms of changes in weight, body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, and blood pressure. The results showed that weight decreased with weighted mean difference (WMD) of -4.37 (95% confidence interval (CI): -6.54 to -2.20), but the effectiveness was statistically significant only in short-term programs < 6 months (P = 0.001). BMI also decreased with WMD of -1.26 (95% CI: -1.98 to -0.55), but the effectiveness was statistically significant only in short-term programs < 6 months (P = 0.001). Total cholesterol decreased with WMD of -5.57 (95% CI: -9.07 to -2.07) mg/dL, demonstrating significant effectiveness (P = 0.002). Both systolic (WMD: -4.90 mmHg) and diastolic (WMD: -2.88 mmHg) blood pressure decreased, demonstrating effectiveness, but with no statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: The worksite-based dietary interventions for overweight/obese employees showed modest short-term effects. These interventions can be considered successful because weight loss was below approximately 5-10 kg of the initial body weight, which is the threshold for the management of obesity recommended by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network (SIGN).

Development of an accreditation system for dietary and nutrition related education resources (영양.식생활 교육자료의 인증 시스템 개발 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish accreditation systems of reliable educational materials for nutrition and dietary life which could be used in schools, workplace, and health promotion. Methods: The study was conducted from April 2011 to October 2011. Literature reviews, institutional visits, and telephone interviews were conducted. Expert meetings and advisory councils were held in order to receive feedback on development of the accreditation systems. A survey was conducted for the accreditation procedures on 143 professionals, including professors, researchers, health and medical experts, teachers, nutrition teachers, dietitians, and clinical nutritionists. Results: The final procedure of the developed accreditation system was finalized as follows: 1) receiving application twice per year 2) complete desk review (written evaluation) by three reviewers within two months, 3) board review (all board members) and decision, and 4) notification of results. The accreditation system is set for printed materials, web-site, and materials for activities. The certificate and accreditation mark is issued to the final certified educational materials. Expiration date is established only for the web-site form. The accreditation length lasts for two years, and can be extended by renewal application. Conclusion: The dietary and nutrition related materials, which are certificated by this accreditation system, could impart reliable information and knowledge to both learners and educators, and help them in effective selection of educational materials. Therefore, this accreditation system might be expected to increase satisfaction for teaching and learning about nutrition and healthy dietary life.
