  • Present review is built on base of research work on Ganoderma lucidum in our laboratory. A great deal of experimental evidence has suggested that the pharmacological activities of Ganoderma lucidum (Lingzhi) are related to anti-oxidative and free radical scavenging activity. The anti-oxidative and free radical scavenging effects of polysaccharides and triterpenoids isolated from Ganoderma lucidum in different oxidative injury models including tert-butylhydroperoxide (tBOOH)- damaged mice peritoneal macrophages, alloxan-induced diabetes, experimental liver injury models induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), D-galactosamine (DGal) and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) plus lipopolysaccharides (LPS) were investigated. It is also demonstrated that Lugu lingzhi, one of Ganoderma product, significantly inhibited LDL oxidation mediated by endothelial cells and decreased monocyte adhesion to endothelial cell (EC) induced by Oxidative low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and advanced glycation endproducts (AGE). Lugulingzhi-treated serum could markedly inhibit the expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-l) induced by ox-LDL and AGE.

  • In microelectronics packaging, the reliability of the metal/polymer interfaces is an important issue because the adhesion strength between dissimilar materials is often inherently poor. The modification of polymer sufaces by ion beam irradiation and rf plasma are commonly used to enhance the adhesion strength of the interface. T-peel strengths were measured using a Cu/polyimide system under varying $Ar^+$ ion beam irradiation pretreatment conditions. The measured T-peel strength showed reversed camel back shape regarding the fixed metal-layer thickness, which was quite different from the results of the $90^{\circ}$ peel test. The elementary analysis suggests that the variation of the T-peel strength is a combined outcome of the plastic bending work of the metal and polymer strips. The results indicate that the peel strength increases with $Ar^+$ ion beam irradiation energy at the fixed metal-layer thickness.

  • In this work, recovery of semiconductive silicone rubber on oxygen plasma treatment was investigated in terms of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The adhesion characteristics of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber were studied by measuring the T-peel strengths. As a result, surface methyl groups is removed and an oxidized layer containing Si atoms bound to 3 or 4 oxygens appears. The surface is later covered by a very thin layer due to migration of low-molecular-weight components from the bulk, resulting in decreasing the degree of adhesion of the semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber these results are probably due to reorientation of polar groups or migration of low-molecular-weight.

  • In this work, electrophoretic paint (E-paint) was deposited on AZ31 Mg alloy after four different surface pretreatments: knife abrading, SiC paper abrading, deionized (DI) water immersion and NaOH immersion. The deposition process of E-paint was studied by analyses of voltage-time and current-time curves, amount of deposited paint, current efficiency and surface oxide film resistance and the adhesion of E-paint was examined by tape test before and after immersion in DI water for 500 h at $40$^{\circ}C$. It was found that the induction time for the deposition, the amount of deposited paint and the current efficiency are inversely proportional to the resistances of surface films prepared by different surface pretreatment methods. The electrophoretic painting showed longer inductance time, larger amount of deposited paint and higher current efficiency on the highly conducting surfaces, such as knife-abraded and SiC-abraded surfaces than on the less conducting surfaces, such as DI water-immersed and NaOH-immersed samples. Excellent adhesion was observed on the E-paintings deposited onto knife-abraded and SiC-abraded AZ31 Mg alloy samplesSiC-abraded AZ31 Mg alloy samples.

  • In this work, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) were used to modify asphalt, resulting in SBR- and SBS-modified asphalt, respectively. The two modified asphalts were emulsified with a nonionic emulsifier (Span 60) and cationic emulsifiers (ID, DDA) and their phase stabilization was investigated via particle size, Zeta potential, and flow behavior analysis. With increasing amount of the mixed emulsifier, the particle size decreased, leading to an increase in viscosity. The shear thinning behaviors and Zeta potential values ranging from 35-65 mV were determined and remained considerably stable. In addition, the adhesion strength and compression strength of the SBR-and SBS-modified asphalt emulsion were evaluated via surface free energy examination. The remarkable adhesion and compression strengths were estimated when 5 phr ID and 6 phr DDA were added to the emulsified asphalt modified with SBR and SBS. Therefore ID and DDA, the two cationic surfactants, played significant roles in improving the dispersion and interfacial adhesion strength, resulting in the improved adhesion and compression strength of the emulsified asphalts modified with SBR and SBS.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of reaction pH conditions and hardener types on the reactivity, chemical structure and adhesion performance of UF resins. Three different reaction pH conditions, such as traditional alkaline-acid (7.5 → 4.5), weak acid (4.5), and strong acid (1.0), were used to synthesize UF resins which were cured by adding three different hardeners (ammonium chloride, ammonium citrate, and zinc nitrate) to measure adhesion strength. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) spectroscopies were employed to study chemical structure of the resin prepared under three different reaction pH conditions. Adhesion strength of the resins cured with three different hardeners was determined with lap shear specimens in tension. The gel time of UF resins decreased with an increasing in the amount of both ammonium chloride and ammonium citrate added in the resins. However, the gel time increased for zinc nitrate. Both FT-IR and 13C-NMR spectroscopies showed that the strong reaction pH condition produce uronic structures in UF resin, while both alkaline-acid and weak acid conditions produce quite similar chemical species in the resins. The maximum adhesion strength was occurred with the resin prepared under strong acid pH condition. However, this study indicated that the weak acid reaction condition provide a balance between increasing resin reactivity and improving adhesion strength of UF resin. The measurement of formaldehyde emission from the panels bonded with the UF resins prepared is planned for future work.

  • The main objective of this work was studying the influence of paraffin oil(PO) on the adhesion properties at low temperature in styrene-butadiene-styrene(SBS) copolymer and crumb rubber(CR) modified asphalt. The temperature susceptibility of SBS/CR asphalt and PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends were measured by penetration and softening point. Adhesion properties at low temperature and dispersion of modifiers in PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends were evaluated by universal test machine and florescence microscopy, respectively. The adhesion properties of PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends at low temperature increased in the proportion of SBS contents with both 5 and 10 wt % of paraffin oil. Results showed that the maximum tensile adhesion strength and toughness energy at $-20^{\circ}C$ were obtained when PO and SBS contents were 10 wt % and 6 wt %, respectively. The addition of PO is effective for enhancing the flexibility of SBS/CR/asphalt blends and leads to the increase of toughness at low temperature.

  • In the aircraft industry, anti- and de-icing are one of very important techniques for the safety. The anti-icing technique had not been studied while de-icing technique had been not only researched enough but applied to aircraft industry. In this work, surface roughness and energies of polyurethane (PU) topcoat were controlled with 3 different nanoparticles which was coated to PU topcoat. It was evaluated via static contact angle using distilled water. The adhesion property of 3 nanoparticles was evaluated directly using adhesion pull-off test. The color gamut of nanoparticle coated PU topcoat was also evaluated with 3 different nanoparticles. It was determined using RGB color degree variation between neat PU topcoat and coated nanoparticle. Finally, the optimized nanoparticle was determined to manufacture hydrophobic surface and to maintain color of neat PU topcoat for the aircraft.

  • In this work, the epoxy specimens were prepared from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) with silane coupling agents (3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS)) in different ratios. Thermal stability was studied in terms of polymer decomposition temperature (PDT), temperature of maximum rate of weight loss ($T_{max}$), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), and decomposition activation energy ($E_a$) using TGA analysis. Adhesion properties of epoxy composite specimens were measured by UTM (universal testing machine) at atmosphere temperature. In this result, the adhesion properties of DGEBF were improved by addition of silane coupling agents compared to non-treated epoxy resin. However, when the content of GPTMS agent is more than 10 phr, adhesion properties decreased with increasing GPTMS agent.
