The introduction of tracer gas techniques to ventilation studies in indoor environments provides valuable information that used to be unattainable from conventional testing environments. Data acquisition systems (DASs) containing analogue-to-digital (A/D) converters are usually used to function the key role that records signals to storage in digital format. In the testing process, there exist a number of components in the measuring equipment which may produce system-based inference to the monitored results. These unwanted fluctuations may cause significant error in data analysis, especially when non-linear algorithms are involved. In this study, a pre-processor is developed and applied to separate the unwanted fluctuations (noise or interference) in raw measurements and to reduce the uncertainty in the measurement. Moving average, notch filter, FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filters, and IIR (Infinite Impulse Response) filters are designed and applied to collect the desired information from the raw measurements. Tracer gas concentrations are monitored during leakage and ventilation tests in the model test room. The signal analysis functions are introduced to carry out the digital signal processing (DSP) work. Overall the FIR filters process the $CO_2$ measurement properly for ventilation rate and mean age of air calculations. It is found that, the Kaiser filter was the most applicable digital filter for pre-processing the tracer gas measurements. Although the IIR filters help to reduce the random noise in the data, they cause considerable changes to the filtered data, which is not desirable.
Naval ships are complex weapon systems which play the integrated performance by system integration of many kinds of weapon systems and their leading ships are usually not disposed after test and evaluation but militarised. Then, strict project management is required for naval ship building projects by identifying problems early and by taking prefer measures in time against unexpected situations encountered in the process of the projects. EVMS is a project management system which can manage the schedule and the budget of a project concurrently and estimate the project's time duration and the cost at project completion. In this paper, the applicability and usefulness of WMS is studied for a assumed navai ship building project, in the environment of monetary fluctuations such as price index, wage increase rate and exchange rate.
Grid computing is an emerging technology that enables global resource sharing. In Korea, the $K^*$Grid provides an extremely powerful research environment to both industries and academia. As part of the $K^*$Grid project, we have constructed, together with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information and a number of domestic universities, a supercomputer Grid test bed which connects several types of supercomputers based on the globus toolkit. To achieve efficient networking in this Grid testbed, we propose a novel method of available bandwidth measurement, called Decoupled Capacity measurement with Initial Gap (DCIG), using packet trains. DCIG can improve the network efficiency by selecting the best path among several candidates. Simulation results show that DCIG outperforms previous work in terms of accuracy and the required measurement time. We also define a new XML schema for DCIG request/response based on the schema defined by the Global Grid Forum (GGF) Network Measurement Working Group (NM-WG).
Lining systems are used for two purpose in landfills : as covers to minimize leachate generation and surface water contamination by providing a barrier from precipitation and other percolating waters, and as containment liners to contain leachate and minimize its downward migration into underlying groundwater. So identifying leaks in landfill liners is an essential part of waste management. There are many leakage detection systems to monitor and seek leakage location, such as two electrode method, electrode grid method, diffusion hoses, capacitance sensors and tracers sensing cables. However, most of them can be applied in the new landfill construction sites because sensors must be installed prior to work. This paper presents a new type of leakage detection system, so called fence type electrode arrangement system, to monitor leakage and to seek leakage location in working landfill as well as new landfill. This system is based on the measurement of an electrical current flowing through leakage point. Series of laboratory tests are performed to investigate an availability of this system and this paper present some of these results.
A micro positioning system using piezoelectric actuators have very wide application region such as ultra-precision machine tool optical device measurement system. In order to keep a high precision displacement resolution it to useful to take a position sensor and feedback of the error. From the practical point of view high-resolution displacement sensor systems are very expensive and it is difficult to make such a sensitive sensor work properly in a poor operational environment of industry. In this study a piezo-electric micro-depth control system which does not require position sensor but piezoelectric voltage feedback has been developed. It is driven by hysteresis-considering reference input voltage calculated in advance and actuator/sensor characteristics of piezoelectric materials. From the result of experiments a fast and stable response of micro-depth control system has been achieved and an efficient technique to control the piezoelectric actuator suggested.
In this study, an automatic system for improving the working environment and increasing production efficiency of a laver aquaculture industry in Korea was developed by combining a hydraulic control system and a load cell in a current landing work of the laver. The improved gathering laver system allowed the automatic gathering process of the laver in the sea with the hydraulic control system connected to a cutting machine of the laver on the operating ship, which has been used for gathering the laver semi-automatically in a form of the traditional farming method. The transporting process of the laver from an operating ship to the land was improved as follows. A frame installed on the operating ship and the bag nets were designed and made to hold about 1,000 kg of the laver inside. The bag nets contain the laver on the improved operating ship were tied in knots and hooked on a crane using a load cell. The weight is measured immediately by lifting the bag nets through the load cell system. Weight information is communicated to the fishermen and successful bidders through the application. The advantages of the improved system can help fishermen to fish by improving their working environment and increasing production efficiency. The field survey to improve the landing operation of the laver aquaculture was conducted in Gangjin, Goheung, Shinan, Wando, Jindo, and Haenam in South Jeonnam Province. A total of 10 sites including Gunsan in Jeonbuk Province, Daebu Island in Ansan City, Jebu Island in Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province, and Seocheon in Chungnam Province were searched to collect data. Prototypes of the system were tested at the auction house of laver located in Goheung, where laver collection using hydraulic control and landing using road cell could be improved.
Background: This work presents an experimental and modeling study of the electromagnetic environment in the vicinity of a high voltage substation located in eastern Algeria (Annaba city) specified with a very high population density. The effects of electromagnetic fields emanating from the coupled multi-lines high voltage power systems (MLHV) on the health of the workers and people living in proximity of substations has been analyzed. Methods: Experimental Measurements for the Multi-lines power system proposed have been conducted in the free space under the high voltage lines. Field's intensities were measured using a referenced and calibrated electromagnetic field meter PMM8053B for the levels 0 m, 1 m, 1.5 m and 1.8 m witch present the sensitive's parts as organs and major functions (head, heart, pelvis and feet) of the human body. Results: The measurement results were validated by numerical simulation using the finite element method and these results are compared with the limit values of the international standards. Conclusion: We project to set own national standards for exposure to electromagnetic fields, in order to achieve a regional database that will be at the disposal of partners concerned to ensure safety of people and mainly workers inside high voltage electrical substations.
This research proposes measuring of BCG(ballistocardiogram) to monitor heart activities in a non-constrained environment, at home or work. Unlike with ECG, measuring BCG does not require the attachment of leads on the subject's body and allows signal measuring in a non-constrained state. It enables effective long-term monitoring of cardiac conditions. In this study a chair type BCG measurement system to continuous monitor the activity of the heart is implemented. The instrument consists of upper petal and ready for press of chair load cell sensor is attached to measure the change of the object's weight. In order to extract the output ballistic signal from the weight and force sensor signals. Beside the signal processing circuit for the digital conversion, the ballistic signal is detected using DAQ equipment. Signal processing algorithm including wavelet transforms for noise cancellation, template matching for normalization and peak detection in BCG is developed. ECG and BCG were concurrently measured to evaluate the performance of the system, and comparing the characteristics of the two signals verified the possibility of the system in non-constrained and nonconscious health monitoring.
The nanoscale sensing and manipulation have become a challenging issue in micro/nano-robotic applications. In particular, a feedback sensor-based manipulation is necessary for realizing an efficient and reliable handling of particles under uncertain environment in a micro/nano scale. This paper presents a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever for nanoscale force measurement in micro robotics. A piezoresistive MEMS cantilever enables sensing of gripping and contact forces in nanonewton resolution by measuring changes in the stress-induced electrical resistances. The calibration of a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever is experimentally carried out. In addition, as part of the work on nanomanipulation with a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever, the analysis on the interaction forces between a tip and a material, and the associated manipulation strategies are investigated. Experiments and simulations show that a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever integrated into a micro robotic system can be effectively used in nanoscale force measurements and a sensor-based manipulation.
Piping systems play an important role in gas and oil transferring system. In the piping system, there are many elements, such as valves and flow meters. In order to check their normal operating conditions, each signal from each element is displayed on the monitor in the pipe control room. By the way, there are several accidental cases in the piping system even if all signals from the local elements are judged to be normal on the monitor in the control room. Further, opposite cases often happen even the monitor shows abnormal while the local elements work normal. To overcome this abnormal functions, it is not so easy to construct the environment in which sensors detecting the working states of all elements installed in the piping system. In this paper, a new non-contact measurement technique which can calculate the elements' delicate displacements by using a PIV(particle image velocimetry) and diagnose their working states by using a neural network is proposed. The measurement system consists of a host computer, a micro system, a telescope and a high-resolution camera. As a preliminary test, the constructed measurement system was applied to measure delicate vibrations of mobile phones. For practical application, a pneumatic system was measured by the constructed system.
