  • In this paper, we describe a question-answering system which extracts answers for the superlative questions which include the superlative words such as "the most", "the best", "the first", "the largest", "the least", and so on. The superlative questions are composed of four main components and others. Four main components are the superlative word, answer type, regional information, and a verb modified by the superlative word. We classify the superlative words into two types as to whether the verb has to be needed to be a question or not. The superlative word, answer type and regional information are essential elements to extract answer for all superlative questions. But the verb may be an essential element by the type of superlative word. Our system analyzes input question, and finds four main components of the superlative question. Also, our system searches relative documents and candidate sentences using them, and extracts answers from candidate sentences. Empirical result shows that our system has high precision and high recall for the superlative questions.

  • This paper proposes an automatic construction system for transliteration dictionary from English-Korean parallel corpus. The system works in 3 steps: it extracts all nouns from Korean documents as the first step, filters transliterated foreign word nouns out of them with the language identification method as the second step, and extracts the corresponding English words by using a probabilistic alignment method as the final step. Specially, the fact that there is a corresponding English word in most cases, is utilized to extract the purely transliterated part from a Koreans word phrase, which is usually used in combined forms with Korean endings(Eomi) or particles(Josa). Moreover, the direct phonetic comparison is done to the words in two different alphabet systems without converting them to the same alphabet system. The experiment showed that the performance was influenced by the first and the second preprocessing steps; the most efficient model among manually preprocessed ones showed 85.4% recall, 91.0% precision and the most efficient model among fully automated ones got 68.3% recall, 89.2% precision.

  • Various document categorization methods have been studied to provide a user with an effective way of browsing a large scale of documents. They do compares set of documents into groups of semantically similar documents automatically. However, the automatic categorization method suffers from low accuracy. This thesis proposes a semi-automatic document categorization method based on the domains of documents. Each documents is belongs to its initial domain. All the documents in each domain are recursively clustered in a level-wise manner, so that the category tree of the documents can be founded. To find the clusters of documents, the stop-word of each document is removed on the document frequency of a word in the domain. For each cluster, its cluster keywords are extracted based on the common keywords among the documents, and are used as the category of the domain. Recursively, each cluster is regarded as a specified domain and the same procedure is repeated until it is terminated by a user. In each level of clustering, a user can adjust any incorrectly clustered documents to improve the accuracy of the document categorization.
