Gasification of biomass produces syngas containing CO, $H_2$ and/or $CH_4$, which can then be converted into energy or value-added fuels. One of key issues for efficient gasification is to minimize tar concentration in the syngas for use in a final conversion device such as gas engine. This study investigated the decomposition of primary tar by catalytic cracking using char as catalyst, of which the feature can be integrated into a fixed bed gasifier design. The pyrolysis vapor containing tar from pyrolysis of wood at $500^{\circ}C$ was passed through a reactor filled with or without char at $800^{\circ}C$ for a residence time of 1, 3 or 5 sec. Then, the condensable vapor (water and tar) and gases were analyzed for the yields and elemental composition. Four types of char particles with different microscopic surface area and pore size distribution: wood, paddy straw, palm kernel shell and activated carbon. The results were analyzed for the mass and carbon yields of tar and the composition of product gases to conclude the effects of char types and residence time.

There are difficulties in removing wood tar wastewater coming from the power plants that use wood-based fuels due to its intermittent occurrences and severe changes in the amount and concentration. This study investigated the treatment characteristics through physicochemical treatment, an improved method from the existing ones using bag filters and activated carbons to treat wood tar wastewater. In the case of chemical properties of wood tar wastewater, the content of phenols was found to be more than two times higher than that of guaiacols and carbohydrates. Installation is done to ensure that NaOH and PAC are injected automatically according to the change of pH, and then pH, turbidity and SS of the final treated water were examined. The results were 5.9, 12.6 NTU and 15.1 mg/L respectively, which confirmed the possibility of the treated water as circulation water of power plants. In the physical treatment process using a conventional bag filter, removal efficiency of chemicals was about 20%, but the treatment efficiency was improved to show chemical removal efficiency of about 80% through flocculation and sedimentation.
The concerns of wood vinegar increase with its various applications to food additive, functional drink, and in the sustainable farming. Chaff vinegar, a by-product of chaff charcoal which is produced by distilling smoke and having similar ingredients and efficacy with wood vinegar, contains harmful tar in the acceptable range and can be mass-produced. A chaff vinegar distiller, commercially mass-productive, was developed using a water cooling system. Initially distilled vinegar by the developed system contained little harmful tar in the acceptable range for the agricultural use and its acidity was about pH 3.2. Treatment of the chaff vinegar in the enhancing emergence test showed greater number of emerged seedlings, and vise-versa. Treatment of diluted in 100-holds showed 44.0% of emerged and 8.6% of not-emerged seedlings.

The catalytic steam reforming of woody biomass tar and soot to convert a synthetic gas containing hydrogen was investigated by using a bench-scale biomass gasification system. One commercial nickel-based catalyst, Katalco 46-6Q, and two different kinds of natural minerals, dolomite and olivine, were tested as a reforming catalyst at various reforming temperatures. The reaction characteristics of woody biomass tar were also investigated by TGA at a variety of heating rates. With all three catalysts conversion efficiency of tar and soot increased at increasing temperature. The reforming of tar and soot in the synthetic gas induce the increase of combustible gases such as $H_2$, CO and $CH_4$ in the product gas. The nickel-based catalyst showed a higher tar and soot conversion efficiency than mineral catalysts under the same temperature conditions.

Biomass is considered an alternative energy which can solve an greenhouse gas problem like $CO_2$ which is a major contributor to global warming. The biomass can be converted to various energy sources through thermochemical conversion. In this study, a continuous gasifier was engineered for a wood biomass gasification. The biomass was used a waste wood. The experiments of $CO_2$ gasification were achieved as the gasification temperature, moisture content and input $CO_2$ concentration. The results showed that the yield of producer gas increased with an increasing the gasification temperature. The amount of the light tar increased due to the decomposition of gravimetric tar by the thermal cracking, and the char was confirmed pore development through the SEM analysis. The CO concentration was increased with an increased input $CO_2$ concentration from Boudouard reaction. Through the parametric screening studies, the hydrogen and carbon monoxide concentration were 32.91% and 48.33% at the optimal conditions of this test rig.
A combustible producer gas composed of H2, CO and CH4 could be obtained by the thermal-chemical conversion of biomass. However, a large amount of particulate matters including tar generated causes the mal-function of turbines and engines or the fouling of pipelines. In this study, a wet scrubber using the soybean oil and bag filter were installed, and the removal efficiency was investigated. Hydrate limestone and wood char base activated carbon were pre-coated on the filter medium to prevent clogging of open pores. The removal efficiencies by the bag filter were 86 and 80% for the hydrated limestone and activated carbon coating, respectively. Overall, the collection when using a series of oil scrubbers and bag filters were 88%, while 83% for the filter coating material.
Generally, it takes a long time to purify wood vinegar, and it contains toxic compounds such as tar, methanol, phenol and benzopyrene. To reduce the toxicity of wood vinegar itself, we have developed a new purification method of wood vinegar using an oxidation-cohesion reaction and distillation with an active carbon. We have investigated the physico-chemical change (pH, specific gravity, refractive index and dissolved tar), the change of amount of toxic compounds (carbonyl group, phenol, benzopyrene and residual solvents) and organic acids (formic acid (FA), acetic acid (AA), propionic acid (PA)) of the purified wood vinegar under the long term and accelerated storage conditions. Also, we have evaluated the effect of the purified wood vinegar on hair growth using an alopecia model of C57BL/6 mice. As a result, we could find out that the purified wood vinegar was stable and remained without decay under the storage conditions and benzopyrene, a carcinogenic agent, was not detected in the purified wood vinegar. After topical treatment of the purified wood vinegar solution or minoxidil (MXD) for 2 weeks to dorsal skin, the hair regrowth of the mice accelerated faster than that of the control, with no clinical signs. In conclusion, we could suggest a guideline for quality control of process to reduce the toxic compounds in wood vinegar and it might be a useful hair growth promoter in the treatment of baldness or alopecia.

Component analysis and physico-chemical properties of wood and rice hull vinegars were conducted in order to promote the utilization of these environment-friendly materials. Results showed that wood vinegar had higher specific gravity (2.5) and tar content (0.3%), but lower acid content (1.0%) than rice hull vinegar (1.7, 0.05% and 4.4%, respectively). GC-MS component analysis revealed that rice vinegar had higher phenol content (34%) than wood vinegar (11.49%). Acetic acid and propionic acid were also higher in rice hull vinegar. On the contrary, wood vinegar had higher Furancarboxyl aldehyde content (41.6%) than rice hull vinegar (0.67%). Thus, different results in DPPH radical electron donating-abilities were obtained due to different percent composition of each vinegar.

The commercial charcoal kiln was projected the largest source of biomass burning sector in Korea. Commercial charcoal kiln was operated to emit air pollutants into the air without any air pollution prevention equipment. The object of this field survey was to understand characteristics of air pollutants concentration and emission factors and to provide preliminary data for effective processor from oak charcoal manufacturing process. As result of field survey, TSP, $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ concentration from charcoal kiln were 400~37,000 $mg/m^3$. These values were over the 100 $mg/m^3$ in TSP, this value was effluent quality standard of Clean Air Conservation Act. The average concentration of CO, $SO_2$ and TVOC were 2~5%. 0~110 ppm and 820~10,000 ppm respectively. The emission factors were 42.4 g-PM/kg-oak in TSP, 40.3 g-PM/kg-oak in $PM_{10}$, 38.2 g-PM/kg-oak in $PM_{2.5}$, 182.5 g-CO/kg-oak, 1.0 g-NO/kg-oak, $SO_2$ 0.2 g-$SO_2/kg$-oak and 104.4 g-TVOC/kg-oak. The part of commercial charcoal kiln had air pollution prevention equipment but it was difficult to work properly. Much wood tar excreted in exhaust emissions from oak charcoal manufacturing process. This wood tar was cause of many troubles sticking in the air pollutant prevention equipment. For handling particulate matters and gaseous air pollutants from oak charcoal manufacturing process in biomass burning, air pollutant prevention equipment design and management needs preprocessor for removal wood tar.

Due to the depletion and environmental problems of fossil fuel, biomass has arisen as an alternative energy source. Biomass is a renewable and carbon-neutral source. However, it is moister and has lower energy density. Therefore, biomass needs thermal chemical conversion processes like gasification, and it does not only produce a flammable gas, called 'syngas', which consists of CO, H2, and CH4, but also some unwanted byproducts such as tars and some particulates. These contaminants are condensed and foul in pipelines, combustion chamber and turbine, causing a deterioration in efficiency. Thus this work attempted to find a method to remove tars and particles from syngas with a filter which adopts a pre-coating technology for preventing blockage of the filter medium. Hydrated limestone powder and activated carbon(wood char) powder were used as the pre-coat materials. The removal efficiency of the tars was 86 % and 80 % with activated carbon(wood char) coating and hydrated limestone coating, respectively.
