This study evaluated the ability of white and brown rot fungi to decompose fire retardant-treated wood by measuring mass loss. Anti efficacy of FRT against sapstain and mold fungi was evaluated. Wood was treated with liquid sodium silicate and boric acid, ammonium borate, di-ammonium phosphate. Retardant treated wood was then subjected to fungal decay resistance tests performed according to KS standard method using a brown-rot fungus, Fomitopsis palustris and white rot fungus Trametes versicolor. Aspergillus niger, Penicillium funiculosum, Rhizopus nigricans, Aureobasidium pullulans, Tricoderma virede fungi were used anti-sapstain and mold test. Boron and phosphorus chemicals used in this study increased the resistance of fire retardant treated wood against both fungal attack. Anti mold and sapstain efficacy of the fire retardant treated wood was excellent but there were difference depend on mold. After the liquid sodium silicate treatment, the second chemical treatment process could lead chemical fixation into wood, which effects decay resistance.
To development of the low toxic preservatives, we prepared 29 kinds of chemicals using dinotefuran of low toxic insecticide, IPBC and propiconazol of fungicide, and clove oil has fungicidal activity, but is harmless to humans. It was conducted to investigate the inhibitory effectiveness of mycelial growth and anti-mold effectiveness to treated PDA medium and wood specimen with prepared chemicals. It was not showed anti-mold effectiveness that solvent and emulsifier form preservatives. Therefor, we thought that only four component, dinotefuran, IPBC, propiconazol and clove oil, has anti-mold effectiveness. In the PDA medium test, the preservative which has much IPBC showed high anti-mold effectiveness. By the wood specimen test, it was known that many prepared preservatives which showed good inhibitory effectiveness of mycelial growth in the PDA medium test, have not anti-mold effectiveness. Of all prepared preservatives in this study, only three preservatives containing dinotefuran and IPBC, or adding clove oil appeared the excellent anti-mold effectiveness.

Background : To control ginseng gray mold, farmers have mainly used inorganic chemical based fungicides. The recent emergence of fungicide resistance has reduced the effectiveness of such control methods. Such pesticides also carry additional problems, such as diffuse pollution. Methods and Results : Six treatments of organic agricultural materials were tested for control of ginseng gray mold, CAPW (Chrysophanic acid + Phytoncide + Wood vinegar), EmEWV (Emodin + Ethanol + Wood vinegar), CEWV (Curcumin + Eugenol + Wood vinegar), Bacillus subtilis, soybean oil and sulfur. The control effect for gray mold by a single application of the agrochemical fungicide industrial Fenhexamid wettable powder (WP) was 84.4%. The control effect by CAPW, EmEWV and CEWV varied between 52.7 - 64.9%. The control effect by B. subtilis, soybean oil, and sulfur were 32.9 - 59.2%. Conclusions : In the field tests, CAPW showed the highest control effects when used before, and at first stage of disease incidence, against ginseng gray mold.
Nakdong technique is an unfamiliar scorching treatment using an iron heated in a kiln over 1000℃. It is a typical convention in Asian countries to treat Nakdong on the surface of paulownia species. The scorching treatment changes the surface characteristics as well as the color of the wood. This study focused on the effects of functional features such as water resistance, anti-mold, anti-termite, and sound improvement because this treatment is usually used on paulownia wood-bodied musical instruments surface. It took 28'57" for Nakdong-iron treated surface to absorb a droplet of water. The absorbance time of iron treated surface was longer than that of torch treated one. There was no noticeable effect on the anti-mold test. On the anti-termite test, there was nearly 3% more mean mass loss on the torch samples than controlled and iron treated ones. In examining the sound radiation coefficient before and after Nakdong treatment, the Nakdong-iron treated surface showed an increase in the average value of 1.2 m4/kg s, which means that it has sound quality improvement. Through this research, the Nakdong technique results are expected to be used as basic-data for further research and give a practical idea for using the traditional treatment method on the wood surface.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of metabolites produced form Streptomyces rimosus in controlling the growth of sapwood - inhabiting fungi. In order to carry out this task, the following specific fungi were tested : sapstain fungi - Ceratocystis pilifera, Ceratocystis piceae, and Aureobasidium pullulans ; mold fungi - Trichoderma hazianum, Trichoderma viride, Penicillium cirtrinum, and Aspergillus niger. Based on the tests, the following observations can be drawn. 1. The conidial germination of sapstain and mold fungi was completely inhibited leaving a clear zone around the paper disc treated with metabolites. The best inhibition was observed in A. pullulans plate and the least in T. viride. 2. Concentration of SB medium for the production of metabolites from St, rimosus affected antifungal activity of metabolites against sapwood - inhabiting fungi. Metabolites prepared from 1/3${\times}$SB medium showed the best activity and the least activity was observed in metabolites form 1/4${\times}$medium. 3. in vivo and in vitro test using wood blocks, treatment of pine sapwood blocks with metabolites also inhibited conidial germination and thus prevented discoloration. 4. Treatment with metabolites did not change the macroscopic structure of wood and did not cause the discoloration of the surface of wood by pigments produced form St. rimosus. In conclusion the results of this study indicate that antifungal metabloites of St, rimosus could be used for the biological control of sapstain and mold fungi.
Surface mold fungi growing on CCA-treated wood could be inhibited effectively by the incorporation of moldicide into treating solution. In this study, moldicides compatible with the CCA solutions from various commercial moldicides were screened, and then their optimum concentrations for controlling surface mold on CCA-treated radiata pine sapwood were examined through both the laboratory and the field trials. Among nine commercial moldicdes tested, two substituted isothiazolinones, moldicide A containing 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one and moldicide B containing 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, were chemically compatible with CCA solution. The optimum concentration to be incorporated into 2% CCA treating solution was determined to be 0.001% for moldicide A and 0.003% for moldicide B.
Five type boxes manufactured from cement(A), wood panel(B), charcoal-packed wood panel(C), plywood panel(D) and charcoal-packed plywood panel(E) were prepared. Relationship of preservation characteristic of strawberry and relative humidity, and properties of thermal and sound insulations in the boxes were examined. During the experimental duration, relative humidity in the cement box was highest and lowest in the charcoal-packed wood panel box. Weight loss of strawberry was greatest in charcoal-packed wood panel box and very little in cement box. In the boxes with charcoal-packed wood panel box and very little in cement box. In the boxes with charcoal, strawberry was preserved for 10 days without getting mold, but in cement box it was covered with mold in 3 days. The charcoal-packed boxes showed higher thermal insulation property than the cement box. There were no significant differences in the property of sound insulation among the 5 type boxes. Consequently, it is suggested that charcoal-packed wood panels can be used for a better ecomaterial.
To make good use of chitosan forming complex with heavy metals in wood preservative treatment, woods impregnated with chitosan and copper sulfate were prepared. Amounts of leached copper, decay resistance, anti-mold efficacy, iron corrosion rates, moisture regain rates and degradation pattern in chitosan pre-treated and untreated wood were compared. After leaching test, amounts of leached copper from chitosan pre-treated wood had a much smaller than chitosan untreated wood, and good decay resistance was retained even after leaching test. From these results, it was proved that chitosan-copper complex formed in wood played and important role for decay durability. In chitosan pre-treated wood, damage values by test molds became remarkably smaller, but the growth of test molds was not perfectly inhibited. Distinct differences in iron corrosion rates between chitosan pre-treated and untreated woods was not recognized but chitosan pre-treated wood showed the lower moisture regain rates than chitosan untreated wood because of water insoluble chitosan membrane formed in wood. After leaching test, the tracheid walls in the wood treated with 2.0% copper sulfate only were eroded by the fungal attacks, but those in the wood pre-treated with chitosan remained almost intact.
Effects of a novel mold inhibitor specifically for bamboo, on the properties of composite products have been confirmed in this study. The mechanical and dimensional stability properties of bamboo fiber-based composites (BFBCs) from different bamboo species were also investigated. The results showed that Burmanica Gamble possessed the highest values of modulus of elasticity (MOE) of 33.2 GPa, modulus of rupture (MOR) of 286.9 MPa, compressive strength of 182.6 MPa and shear strength of 24.0 MPa. By contrast, Phyllostochys heterocycla among all of species showed the lowest MOE of 16.3 GPa, MOR of 170.3 MPa and compressive strength of 128.9 MPa were the lowest among all of species. Moreover, there is a remarkable variation in the swelling and water absorption between the samples with 4 h and 28 h water immersion treatment, especially Phyllostachys iridenscens. Overall, the results suggested that TCIT (Tebuconazole and 3(2H)-isothiazolone) had no significant effect on the mechanical properties compared with the control condition, and it would be utilized as an antimould of BFBCs manufacturing.
To develope of the inexpensive anti-stain chemicals, it was conducted to investigate the inhibitory effectiveness of mycelial growth and anti-mold effectiveness against test fungi causing surface mold of wood, iron corrosivity and hygroscopicity of six fluoride-based chemicals made from industrial by- product.Among the six chemicals. RNF-3 and RNF-4 were the most effective with respect to a mycelial growth control and anti-mold effectiveness. For the wood treatment with these chemicals, the optimum concentration was about 2% and there was no difference in the effectiveness of chemicals between wood species. The wood treated with synthesized chemicals showed a relatively high iron corrosion rate for corrosive F component whereas, in the treatment with RNF-3 and RNF-4, there was no difference from the untreated wood when the concentration was less than 2%. The hygroscopic property of wood was not effected by treatment of these chemicals. To prove the feasibility for practical using of RNF-3 and RNF-4 chemicals, it is necessary to test of anti-mold effectiveness in the sawmill by field test.
