  • This study was carried out to determine the Joint characteristic of L-type specimens. L-type specimens were made of two kinds uf solid woods(Antiaris, Sepetir) and three kinds of wood based materials(plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard). They were constructed with PVC anchor and screw, and were discussed with joint strength and stiffness coefficients. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Bending strength showed very high increasing rate from one to three used PVC anchor and screw but was a little rise from three to four used PVC anchor and screw in solid wood. However. in wood based materials, it was unchanged without increasing rate or slight decreased from three to four used PVC anchor and screw. 2. The stiffness coefficients, or Z-values, were in the range from $4.704\times10^{-4}$ to $1.864\times10^{-3}$(rad/kgf-cm). They showed $10^{-3}$ level in one PVC anchor and screw but $10^{-4}$ level in two, three. four PVC anchor and screw. Accordingly, they indicated flexible joints in one PVC anchor and screw and relatively stable joints in two, three. four PVC anchor and screw. 3. Measured ultimate bending moments were 258.70kgf-cm in plywood and 142.68kgf-cm in medium density fiberboard. 4. Comparing with dowel joint. the joint strength used PVC anchor screw was inferior to 8mm and 10mm dowel diameter but differ little from 6mm dowel diameter.

  • Improving public awareness of wood is essential for achieving the goal of establishing wood culture by expanding the use of wood. This study presents a basic examination of the strategy of revitalizing wood culture and a survey of its current status and requirements. The survey was divided into seven categories: awareness of wood culture; use characteristics of wood culture; preference and demand for wood culture; awareness of sub-fields of wood culture; awareness of the cultural resources of wood; trends of wood utilization; and wood-related living environment. Based on the survey results, the study analyzed four items: awareness of wood and cultural experience; awareness of the cultural resources of wood; wood-related living environment and trends of wood utilization; and preference and demand for wood culture. In this study, the public awareness of wood and cultural experiences, the first of four items, was analyzed using the survey results. Generally, wood and wood culture are viewed as materials and a cultural heritage, respectively. Moreover, wood is ecofriendly. However, no substantial difference was observed between the two perceptions. Forty-five percent of the respondents reported that using wood exerts a positive effect on the body and mind. However, such use also destroys forests. Additionally, the recognition of wood-related workers, such as engineers or skilled workers, was relatively low compared with educators, such as wood education experts. Moreover, less than 50% of the respondents answered that major projects related to wood culture are well-known, whereas 30% participated in wood education, such as woodworking experience, where the majority required hand tools. Furniture, wooden accessories, and wooden buildings were among the objects that individuals intended to make through the wood culture program. Approximately 23% of the respondents were aware about the wood culture experience center, while approximately 50% had visited it. The response rate to woodworking technology was 73%, where the highest response was found for wood education experts. To improve public awareness about wood, the importance of entertainment factors over educational factors should be considered in the experience of individuals. To provide opportunities to experience wood culture for more individuals, developing and actively promoting various contents, including entertainment elements, are necessary.

  • The color changing of the wood surface was tested by accelerated weathering test that can simulate the outdoor condition with short period. In early parts of accelerated weathering test, weight and volume of specimen all were increased due to the moisture evaporation by its high temperature and illumination level, but weight and volume of specimen all were decreased from middle parts to last. However, significancy showed between control group and accelerated weathering test group in terms of weight and volume. According to the results of color-difference meter, in the early parts of the accelerated weathering test lightness, redness and yellowness all showed a clear increasing or decreasing trend. However, after three weeks all values were almost never change. Until the early parts of the test, lightness was decreased and there was not a considerable change after three weeks in the test. Redness showed a some change in early parts of the test, but this also showed not great change after middle parts of the test as like lightness. Yellowness also showed same pattern. These results could be verified through the visual inspection. As like weight and volume, significancy showed between control group and accelerated weathering test group in terms of color-difference test. In all accelerated weathering test group, color-differences of after test was lower than that of before test. To correctly analyze this cause, more additional research will be need on each of temperature, humidity and illumination factors.

  • The objective of this study was to conduct the species identification and tree-ring dating of Lotus Pedestal of the Amitabha Statue at Ssangbong-Temple in Hwasun. The six wood blocks used for the Lotus Pedestal were hard pines (Pinus spp.; diploxilon) except one piece which was ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.). The lotus leaves surrounding the pedestal body were also made of ginkgo. Tree-ring patterns of 3 blocks were synchronized and a 133 years chronology was made. The chronology was crossdated well with the master chronology of Japanese red pine in South Korea. It dated back to A. D. 1551~1683, i.e. the last ring dated A. D. 1683. Through the estimation of the number of sapwood rings removed during carving, the felling year was calculated A. D. $1704{\pm}10$. The calligraphic writing on the Pedestal indicated that this statue was made in A. D. 1694. Therefore, the accuracy of the tree-ring dating has been proven.

  • European maple is famous for the optimum solid wood for making bridge which is the most important part in violin acoustics. This study was carried out to investigate the variation of main features, i. e. annual ring width and cutting direction of costly imported violin bridge blanks and to examine the effect of these features of the blanks on the vibrational characteristics of bridge blanks. Imported violin bridge blanks had somewhat large variation in major macroscopical and physical properties and there was little relationship between annual ring density and weight of maple blanks. Resonant frequency of violin bridge blanks had some positive correlation with weight, however, damping having negative relationship with frequency was seldom affected by any physical properties of the maple blanks. Deviation from the radial cutting of tail side(ray direction from top toward feet on the edge of bridge blank) lowered the resonant frequency. Consequently, weight and ray direction should be taken for the critical quality decisive factors(QDF) of incoming bridge blanks by not only inspectors also luthiers who tune the bridge by shaping and are responsible for the final timbre quality of this complicate instrument.

  • To study the suitability of chestnut as a cask for ripening traditional liquors, the absorption property for pure water, liquor with 30% alcohol content and ethanol with 95% alcohol content were investigated for five species. Oriental oak had the greatest amount of liquid absorption while chestnut had the smallest amount. The absorption amount linearly increased with increasing soaking time. The absorption amounts for each section were greatest in RT plane, and the difference between LR plane and LT plane was very small for all soaking conditions. The anisotropy of absorption amount for five species was greatest in Japanese cedar and was smallest in white mulberry on the whole. And the change of absorption amounts according to soaking conditions tended to decrease in softwoods and increase in hardwoods, and the difference among wood species was not clear. From this result, it was found that chestnut with a small absorption amount, regarding of soaking behavior, was a good material as a cask for ripening traditional liquors, whereas small diameter oriental oak with a great absorption amount was not suitable in this purpose.

  • Since 1990's, a flooring based on plywood has gotten customers' demand. Costs of raw material and production increased because of changed environment of industry. Tropical timber such as Red Meranti (Shorea acuminate) used for raw material of the floor has been depleting beside countries in South Eastern Asia changed species of afforestation. As a result, it gets hard to secure good quality of raw material for plywood. Moreover plywood price is increased suddenly after earthquake in Japan. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) in china has been using for raw material as a countermeasure of changed environment of industry. In this study, possibility of using flooring consisted of Eucalyptus veneer as a core layer was checked by heat transfer experiments. Flooring consisted of Red Meranti was used for comparison. Two factors which impact on heat transfer are a type of density gradient and density difference between Long-grain veneer and Short-grain veneer. Red Meranti samples are 'M' type of density gradient on the other hand Eucalyptus samples are 'W' type of density gradient.

  • This study is about watching the changes in Modern and Contemporary ages, through Traditional Ottchil Painting analyzed the formative characteristics presented on 23 pieces of Najeon Master Bong-Ryong Kim. He restored and reproduced the Ottchil Painting Technique by making Najeon ware (lacquer ware inlaid with the mother-of-pearl) on the Korean Modern and Contemporary period. The formative characteristics of his Ottchil Painting Technique are as follows. He used a lot of the Myochilchaehoi Technique as the technique of expression, along with the Najeon Yanggam Technique mixed with Myochilchaehoi Technique. The frame material of Ottchil Painting Ware is handcrafted wood. And in the painting foundation, red is presented more than black. The colors of painting and the pattern drawn on the foundation of Ottchil painting are mainly bright red, blue, yellow, black, and white (five-color). The main pattern used is the dragon, and the subordinate patterns are clouds and Arabesque. Also, the main pattern is solo, and the subordinate pattern is mostly an arrangement combination of radiation symmetry. This style of art was most commonly used for painting fruit trays. As stated above, Bong-Ryong Kim presented various and masterful aesthetic quality based on sincere and exquisite Najeon ware production skills.
