  • Tannins are complex polyphenolic substances present in plants. They may be classified as either hydrolysable or condensed tannins, and extracts of the latter type have displayed carcinogenic properties in animal studies (Hausen, 1981). The International Agency for Research on Cancer has determined that exposure to airborne wood dust, especially hardwood dust during furniture manufacture, is a cause of sino-nasal cancer, notably nasal adenocarcinoma. • According to the Korean National Statistics Office(KNSO), more than 90% of Korean adolescents aged from 15 to 19 use a computer for more than 10 hours per week. The KNSO also reveals that this age group mostly uses a computer in their own room, followed by a commercial place. It is also found that the house for the adolescent is not simply a physical environment, but is rather a center of their personal lives where their personal and social developments are formed. Therefore, the physical environment where computers are used is very important. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and needs of computer furniture for the adolescent. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires and 414 adolescents participated. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Most of the respondents(42%) used the internet for less than one hour per day and it was used for community visits and operations, game, and chat rooms. (2) The desks where computers were used were specially designed and made of wood. Chairs were typically height adjustable with armrests and there was no task lighting for computer use. (3) The preferences of computer furniture were chairs with a high back, casters and armrests. The overall satisfaction of individual computer rooms was low. However, it is important for an adolescent to be provided with a user friendly environment for sound growth and development. Further study is therefore needed regarding environmental variables through empirical study.

  • Modern design background of Scandinavia counts the Industrial Revolution and functionalism of Deustscher Werkbund and Bauhaus. However, Scandinavian has created their characteristic 'Scandinavian Modern Furniture' as an adaptation to their environment which are organic form based on their nature, affection of natural material, and handicraft tradition. Finish architect Alvar Aalto and Danish architect Arne Jacobsen rendered great contribution to worldwide reputation of Scandinavian furniture design. Both of them have hold tradition shared historically and culturally in common, brought the weighty traditional thoughts enable to develope their unique design. Especially they had continuous experiment of wood shaping and renovation of manufacturing technique so that they could made their chair design -the laminated bentwoods chair and moulded plywood chair- functionally comfortable. In point of view, the purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the chair design of Alvar Aalto and Arne Jacobsen, focusing un their bentwoods chair. For this purpose, the background of bentwoods chair design was investigated and in the philosophical, formative, and technical aspect, their bentwoods chair design were compared and analyzed.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the species of 82 furniture in the late Choseon Dynasty (mainly, 19th century), which are housed in the Seoul Museum of History. Total of 22 species were found. The species shared 43% as hard pine(Diploxylon), 9% as Zelkova serrata Makino, 7% as Paulownia spp., 7% as Tilia spp., 6% as soft pine(Haploxylon), 5% as Ginkgo biloba Linn., 4% as Cedrela sinensis A. Juss., 3% as Diospyros spp., 3% as Abies spp., 2% as Alnus spp., 2% as Picea spp., 1% as bamboo, 1% as Populus spp., 1% as Betula spp., 1% as Juglans spp. The other minor ones were Torreya nucifera Sieb. et Zucc., Pyrus spp., Castanea spp., Ulmus spp. and Kalopanax oictuse (Thunb.) Nakai. Thirty seven furniture (45% in total) was made of single species, 19 (23%) of two species, 16 (20%) of three species and 10(12%) of 4 to 6 species. For frames and panels, hard and strong woods, such as hard pines, Zelkova and Cedrela, were used. For drawer, however, light woods having low shrinkage, such as Paulownia and Tilia, were used. The origin of woods could be specified by the habitats of the species identified. Both Hwanghaedo- and Parkcheon- Chests used basswood (Tilia), which grow in the cold regions, indicating the origin of woods as North Korea.

  • Radon radiation exposures in home have been posed as a potential cancer hazard. This research aims to present the basic data of the indoor radon concentration level by examining the radon exhalation rates of wood species. Radon exhalation rates from five commonly used wood species in Korean wood building construction were measured with Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM), Model 1028 (Sun Nuclear Co., USA) using the Closed Chamber Method (CCM). The mass exhalation rate was observed to vary from $0.00089Bq{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ to $0.00181Bq{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$, whereas the surface exhalation rate was observed to be $0.00677-0.01517Bq{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}h^{-1}$. The radon exhalation rate of Quercus accutissima Carruth (white oak) which has the highest density showed the highest figure among the five wood species, on the other hand, the rest of four species showed similar results which were similar to the radon exhalation rates of wood in the U.S.A. and Canada. The average of the concentration measured by the CCM represented well up to the second half-life period (7.7 days). Because result of these small quantities seems to indicate that radon exhalation from the tested wood species has almost negligible impact, the main culprit of the high indoor radon concentration is clearly derived from the background of surrounding wood house. Therefore, as a safety precaution, infrastructures made of wood materials should be designed with the consideration of influx of radon and built accordingly. Furthermore, it is highly desirable that wood will be needed to use for furniture and interior finishing material in indoor environment.

  • Among the domestic softwoods, technical value of Pinus koraiensis small diameter logs which have comparatively low applicability was evaluated and sensitive characteristics and physical characteristics were investigated and analyzed for examining if it can be utilized as the interior decoration material. For the sensitive characteristics of Pinus koraiensis, wood figure, wood grain, wood color and odor were evaluated and for the physical characteristics, growth-ring width and latewood percentage, abrasion, density, shrinkage, swelling, absorption, roughness and hardness were evaluated. Then, the possibility to be developed as the interior decoration material was found. As the result of evaluating sensitive characteristics and physical characteristics of domestic Pinus koraiensis, wood figure, wood grain, color and scent clearly were judged to have excellent visual factor as the interior decoration material. And, physical characteristics were also judged to be excellent, so it is judged to be developed as the interior decoration material. Therefore, as the result of various forms of design pattern with domestic Pinus koraiensis small diameter logs, several patterns of interior decoration can be developed by characteristics of each side and colors of heartwood and sapwood. And, in the future, it can be applied to furniture design or interior decoration material for the proper use. Especially, it is considered to contribute to wood applying industry through the study on the quality of domestic small diameter logs which have low applicability.

  • Traditional complex joints have used to a wide variety of wooden furniture construction. Dowel joint is the most popular joint s. However design of this joint to meet specified service condition has been hampered by a lack of proven design formulas which can be use to predict their strength. The object of this study is to investigate the withdrawal strength and effect of dowel diameters in wood and wood based materials. The obtained results were as follows; 1. The relationship between withdrawal strength and dowel diameter is found to be linear. 2. Withdrawal strength of medium density fiberboard and Sepetir in end-to-side joints is superior to Antiaris, particleboard and plywood. 3. In end-to-end joints, withdrawal strength of medium density fiberboard is the most superior joint. but Sepetir. Antiaris and plywood have similarly strength and particleboard is inferiority. 4. Withdrawal strength in end-to-end joints of Antiaris and plywood is higher than in end-ta-side joints. But in end-to-end joints of Sepetir. medium density fiberboard and particleboard is similarity in end-to-side joints.

  • Wood-plastic composites represents a growing class of materials used by the residential construction industry and furniture industry. In this study, the effect of flame retardants on the flammability and mechanical properties of wood flour-high density polyethylene(HDPE) composites were studied. we were manufactured wood flour-HDPE composites by modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder with L/D ratio of 42. The flame retardant properties were used limiting oxygen index(LOI) and mechanical properties were measured by universal testing machine(UTM). The Morphological analysis of composites were analyzed by Scanning electron microscope(SEM). It was found that Ammonium polyphosphate can effectively reduce the flammability of the wood flour-HDPE composites. Marginal reduction in the mechanical properties of the composites was found with addition of flame retardants. SEM images showed that the coupling agent improved wood flour-HDPE interfacial bonding.
