  • The needles of Pinus densiflora, grown in the campus of Kangwon National University were collected, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$ (7:3, v/v) and freeze dried to give 10.4 g of ethylacetate soluble powder. A portion of the freeze dried powder was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column using a series of aqueous methanol and ethanol, and ethanol-hexane mixture as eluents. The extractives contained a large amount of flavan compounds in addition to a small amount of flavonoid derivatives such as kaempferol-3-O-glucopyranoside, and quercetin-(6"-O-acetyl)-glucopyranoside which has not been isolated from this species yet. Some spectrometric analyses such as NMR and FAB-MS were performed to identify the structures of the isolated flavonoid derivatives.

  • 80% Aqueous MeOH extracts from the wood of Caesalpinia sappan, which showed remarkable anticonvulsant activity, were fractionated using EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_2$O. Among them, the EtOAc fraction significantly inhibited the activities of two GABA degradative enzymes, succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) and succinic semialdehyde reductase (SSAR). Repeated column chromatographies for the fraction guided by activity test led to the isolation of the two active principal components. Their chemical structures were determined to be sappanchalcone and brazilin based on spectral data. The pure compounds, sappanchalcone (1) and brazilin (2), inactivated the SSAR activities in a dose dependent manner, whereas SSADH was inhibited partially by sappanchalcone and not by brazilin.

  • As the feature of fire, it is hard for deep-seated fire to spread to the deeper site, and it also has danger for being re-ignited cause of recontacting with oxygen after being put off. Now it is ruled in the certification criteria of wetting agent used for extinguishing deep-seated fire that the criteria for surface tension is below 33[mN/m] in Korea. For figuring out how much water for fire-fighiting can permeate into combustibles, in this research, the permeating performance is analyzed by measuring the speed of permeating and transmission quantity released after that, by pouring solution whose surface tension is changed by adjusting concentration of surfactant BDG(Butyl Di Glycol) in column From this result, it is can be determined that transmission quantity becomes less and wet area goes wider as surface tension is lower, and it is also able to be analyzed as quantity of absorbed liquid and wet area is increased because fluid permeates into the core.

  • Juglans mandshurica is a fast growing hard species, which is a tree in family of Juglandaceae and has a wide distribution in China, Korea and eastern Russia. Plant materials from J. mandshurica have extensively been used in folk medicines to prevent or cure gastric, esophageal, lung and cardiac cancer. As one chain of our searching for anticomplementary agents from natural sources, two epimeric ellagitannins, [2,3-O-4,4',5,5',6,6',-hexahydroxydiphenoyl (HHDP))-(${\alpha},{\beta}$)-D-glucose] (I) and pedunculagin (II) were purified from 70% acetone extracts of the stem barks of J. mandshurica by Thin Layer Chromatography and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography approaches. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were characterized by MS, NMR, and a careful comparation with published literatures. The epimeric ellagitannins I and II exhibited inhibitory properties against a classical pathway of complementary system with 50 % inhibitory concentrations ($IC_{50}$) values of 65.3 and $47.7{\mu}M$, respectively, comparing with riliroside ($IC_{50}=104{\mu}M$) and rosmarinic acid ($IC_{50}=182{\mu}M$), which were used as positive controls. Thus, the work indicated both the two secondary metabolites possess excellent inhibitory activity and might be developed as potential anticomplementary chemicals.

  • The purpose of the study is to understand the unique characteristics of decoration style in traditional Javanese houses. Reviewing literature and visiting site were applied as the research method. Javanese House can be divided into three parts; roof, wall and floor. First, the roof of the traditional Javanese House is the most unique and important decorative element. The roofs are covered with roof-tiles and have clay carving ornaments on top. Usually there are no ceilings, just exposed to the oblique shape roof, which are made of wood to enable air ventilation. Joglo roof is the outstanding and representative roof type of Javanese houses. There is artistic and constructive roof structure named as tumpang sari in Joglo roof. The decoration on tumpang sari is the most colorful and symbolic ornaments. Secondly, the most unique element in the wall is the gebyok. Gebyok is made of wood and full of carved ornament, which has an artistic appearance, and also important function. The top part of doors are designed as perforated woodcarving, which give both aesthetic and ventilation purposes. Last, the stratified floor is begin with ground yard, then veranda that made from hardened clay, and main room constituted with a wood scaffold to provide air circulation and remove the humidity of the ground. The decorations of the column stand (umpak) are unique, where usually lotus flower is carved into black stone or lime stone. The outside of the buildings in Java Houses is not decorated by colors or symbols, whereas colors are only used in temples, pavilion or in royal housings. Instead they have carvings and decorations on important structural elements such as columns and beams inside. The ornaments and colors of decorations symbolize their god, ancestors and piece.

  • To remove $Zn^{2+}$(422 ppm) and $Mn^{2+}$(53.1 ppm) from Sambo mine runoff(the total amount of heavy metals : 107 ppm) in Whasung, packed bed column tests were run in two stages plastic columns. The non-treated bark(Pinus densiflora, Quercus accutisima) of each 6 kg were placed into columns. The height and diameter of column were 60 cm and 45 cm, respectively. Flow rate ranged to 1 ${\ell}$/min for 15 days. The concentration of heavy metal ions in filtrate was determinded periodically. By the treatment of oak bark the initial concentration of $Zn^{2+}$ was maintained under 10 ppm(the adsorption rate: 64%) for 24 hr, while pine bark kept the initial concentration of $Zn^{2+}$ under 20 ppm(the adsorption rate: 53%) for 15 hr. However the initial concentration of $Mn^{2+}$ was reduced only to 10.6~18.6 ppm (the adsorption rate: 20~35%) until 10 hr. Thereafter, the adsorption of $Mn^{2+}$ by bark decreased rapidly. There was little difference in the adsorption ratio of $Mn^{2+}$ between oak and pine bark. The use of bark to remove $Zn^{2+}$ in Samba mine runoff was effective, but it wasn't proper to remove $Mn^{2+}$.

  • The column for Steel Framed Reinforced Concrete Structure (SFRCS) and the column for Reinforced Concrete Structure (RCS) could be the most common building structure. The increasing of the need for massive space hasaffected the size of building components for supporting the massive structure. However, the changing of components size makes inefficient space of building. Hence. to meet the need for acquiring efficient space comparing the budget and cost the new structure method, Concrete Filled Tube Steel (CFT), was developed. CFT is the structure for which steel tube instead of other materials such as wood for holding concrete is used. The most benefit of this one is to help in reducing the size of the building components and local buckling because of tube steel holding concrete. For this reason, this research will examine the probability of applying CFT on construction sites by using the concrete $(800kg/cm^2)$ especially for CFT through the data from the real size mock-up.

  • This study building materials by relates to human hazard assessment in accordance with the combustion gas SEM, the flame-retardant foam FTIR and cone calorimeter to configure the Forest products of MDF and preservative treated Lauan two kinds of Retardant styrofoam, Styrofoam, Urethane foam and gypsum board four kinds of plastics material by the combustion gas were each analyzed. MDF was burned to the structure of the wood and the glue evenly mixed combustion area preservative treated Lauan, kept constant even in the form of high heat to penetrate deep into the wood flame retardant agents. Retardant styrofoam is due to feed my Dropped dissolved inorganic flame retardant without the fire-stick and confirmed that the weak form of gypsum board, but keep the column. In MDF ammonia ($NH_3$), lethal concentration (750 ppm) compared to 795 ppm, preservative treated Lauan is carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) that was greater than 2.5 times the lethal concentration (100,000 ppm) to 256,965 ppm, the lethal concentration (500 ppm) of hydrogen chloride (HCl). The Urethane greater than 697 ppm, 434 ppm also greatly exceeding the nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) lethal concentration (250 ppm) in Retardant styrofoam and 398 ppm was released. It is confirmed that the human body is extremely harmful gas emitted from most of the materials to be utilized as basic data for evaluating the hazard-specific human future building material.
