The biodeterioration behaviors of square post to support the wooden printing blocks Shelves in the Janggeongpanjeon were investigated according to the positions and parts of square post, and environmental conditions. It was found that a high differences of deterioration in the progressing levels of wood decay, according to the positions and parts of square post, and environmental conditions. The decay levels were very high and still progressing in the contacted areas with stone foundation which are about up to 50 cm above it. In the decay type, white rot fungi was mainly affected in the inside of building which mainly made of softwood. The decay in the square posts to support the wooden printing block shelves inside of building was worse in the rear side, compared to front side. The insects was not found in most of square posts excluding the post which was neighboring at the infected round column by insect.
In this study, the effects of carbonization temperature on the physico-chemical properties of Korean red-pine wood (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) powder charcoal are studied by elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and SEM techniques. The surface structure and physico-chemical properties of the wood charcoal greatly depend on the carbonization temperature and their temperature dependences for sapwood (swd) and heartwood (hwd) are qualitatively analogous. Because of the differences in characteristics such as hardness and composition between heartwood and sapwood, charcoals from heartwood have larger specific surface area and smaller average pore diameter than that from sapwood. Because the decomposition reaction mostly proceeds in the precarbonization stage, the charcoal produced in this stage mainly consists of carbon. The second carbonization reaction is insignificant but still proceeds up to $700^{\circ}C$, and the specific surface area continuously increases. Above $800^{\circ}C$, the surface area is reduced by the pore-filling and narrowing effects and especially above $900^{\circ}C$, new carbon phase with hexagonal column rooted into the pore is formed. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm of the charcoal is classified as type I and its hysteresis loop was as type H4.
The freezed Mulberry (10 kg) was extracted with 80% EtOH, concentrated, and fractionated with a series of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water on a separatory funnel. A portion of ethyl acetate soluble (22 g) was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column using a series of aqueous methanol as eluents. The isolated compounds were identified by cellulose TLC, $^1H-$,$^{13}C$-NMR, FAB, and EI-MS. Quercetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (Compound I), protocatechuic acid (Compound II), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (Compound III) were isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction. In antioxidative activities of the fractionated extractives using DPPH radical scavenging test, EtOAc and water soluble fractions indicated better than BHT as contro and in in vitro tests using MTT assay, there was no cytotoxicity. Also, tyrosinase inhibition and anticancer activities were not so good, but there may be a potential as a cosmetic raw material because the cell extension effect was excellent.
Two compounds were isolated from the diethylether and ethyl acetate fraction of hot water extracts by TLC and column chromatography as dyeing components. The isolated compounds were characterized as H-dibenzoquinoline-2,10-diol,5,6,6a,7-tetrahydro-1,9-dimethoxy-6-methyl (compoundI) and lyoniresinol (compoundII) by NMR and Mass spectrophotometry. To investigate if the isolated compounds are involved in the dyeing process, HPLC analysis was used. The retention time of the components from dye used in the study and the dye decolorized from the dyed substrate, silk by ethyl acetate were compared to conform the identity of those compounds. The retention time of the components from the dye and decolorized solution were identical. As a results, those two compounds were considered as dye bound to the silk.
It was observed that the hot-water extract of the bark of Kalopanax pictus N. had the highest anti-complementary activity among the 11 kinds of forest materials. Methanol-and ethanol-soluble portions had low anti-complementary activities, but crude polysaccharide. HKP-0 had a high activity of 80%. HKP-0 contained 54.8% of total sugar and 27.9% of protein. The neutral sugars of HKP-0 consisted of mainly arabinose, galactose and glucose. HKP-4 fraction obtained by cetavlon treatment of HKP-0 showed the highest anti-complementary activity of 90%. The activity was not changed by pronase digestion bu decreased greatly by periodate oxidation. HKP-4 consisted of mainly arabinose and glucose with molar ratio of 1.0 : 22.4, HKP-4-I, an unabsorbed fraction from HKP-4 on DEAE Sepharose CL-6B column showed higher yield and activity than those of absorbed fractions. HKP-4-I was homogeneous, and its molecular weight was about 25,000. HKP-4-I contained 84.0% of neutral sugar and consisted of arabinose and glucose with molar ratio of 1.0 : 11.2. The anti-complementary activity of HKP-4-I was not decreased by the treatment of polymyxin B, and the polysaccharide activated both classical and alternative pathway in complement system. Void volume fraction obtained from HKP-4-I hydrolyzed with ${\alpha}$-amylase on Sephadex G-25 column only had a high anti-complementary activity.
The antifungal activity of methanol extracts against dermatophytes was the highest at root-bark methanol extract, and the highest inhibitory effect was revealed in petroleum ether fraction of root-bark methanol extract. Compound I and compound II with significant antifungal activity were isolated from the fractions by silica gel column chromatography. As a result of the instrumental analyses, compound I and compound II were already known alkaloids. Compound I was identified as 4-methoxyfuro[2,3-6]quinoline (dictamnine ; $C_{12}H_9NO_2$) and compound II was identified as 4-methoxy-lmethyl-2(1H)-quinolinone ($C_{11}H_{11}NO_2$). The MIC of compound I against T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum was $40{\mu}g/m\ell$ and the MIC of compound II against the same fungi was $800{\mu}g/m\ell$.

This research was performed by means of several different virgin granular activated carbons (GAC) made of each coal, coconut and wood, and the GACs were investigated for an adsorption performance of bromate in a continuous adsorption column. Breakthrough behavior was investigated that the breakthrough points of the virgin two coals-, coconut- and wood-based GACs were observed as 9252 bed volume (BV), 6821 BV, 5291 BV and 2431 BV, respectively. The experimental results of adsorption capacity (X/M) for bromate showed that two coal- based GACs were highest (1334.5 and 798.2 ${\mu}g$/g), the coconut-based GAC was intermediate (668.6 ${\mu}g$/g) and the wood-based GAC was lowest (156.8 ${\mu}g$/g). The X/M of the coal-based GACs was 2~8.5 times higher than the X/M of the coconut-based and wood-based GACs. The results of carbon usage rates (CURs) for the virgin two coal-, coconut- and wood-based GACs were shown as 0.19, 0.25, 0.33 and 0.71 g/day respectively. The adsorption capacity, k values, were also investigated by means of the GACs for bromate. The k values of two coal-, coconut- and wood- based GACs for bromate were found to be 121.3, 76.7, 43.3 and 14.6 respectively. This results suggested that using the virgin GAC made of coal was the best selection for removal of bromate in the water treatment for an advanced treatment.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of monosaccharides extracted by saturated portland cement solution on the cement setting in comparision with the inhibitory index (I) of each lignocellulosic-cement system. The wood species which have been widely reforested in Korea, Populus alba-grandulosa, Larix leptolepis, Abies holophylla, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora and agricultural wastes of rice husk and rice stalk were used at this study. The wood meal, 0.50g on dry weight basis, through 0.83 mm(20 mesh) and retained on 0.35mm (40 mesh) screen was extracted by 25 ml saturated portland cement solution and the pH of saturated portland cement solution Was 12.7. To eliminate cation exsisting in the extracted solution, the cation exchange column was used (Fig. 4). Afterwards the extracted monosaccharides were reduced into alditols with sodium borohydride and analyzed by the gas-liquid chromatography for xylan, mannan, arabinan, galactan, gluean. The heat of cement hydration for lignocellulosic-cement system was measured in Dewar flask (Fig. 2). And then the inhibitory indices were calculated from maximum hydration temperature, time and maximum slops of hydration curve of ligno cellulosic-cement systems. The results obtained were as follows; (1) The inhibitory index of pines-Pinus rigida (I=29.33) and Pinus densiflora (I=35.76), were lower than that of poplar-Populus alba-glandulosa (I=41.48), and the index of Larix ieptoiepis (I=73.00) was the highest among eight lignocellulosic-cement systems, and accordingly both Pinus rigida and Pinus des(flora were seemed to be good wood species for wood-cement composite manufacture. (2) In case of Pinus rigida, the inhibitory index was 29.33 and the ratio of the hexoses to the pemoses was 6.04 and in case of Larix leptolepis, the index and the ratio were 73.00 and 35.19, respectively. Therefore the inhibitory index increased with increasing the ratios of the hexoses to the pentoses. (3) The richer amount of xylose and mannose in species caused decreasing the slops of the hydration curve of the lignocellulosic-cement system, prohahly due to the chemical adsorption of the acetyl groups in the hemicellulose on the surface of cement grains. (4) The amoun of xylose and mannose were significant to the inhibitory index of each lignocellulosic-cement system but any specific relation between the amount of glucose and inhibitory index was not found.

This study was done to investigate perchlorate contamination in Nakdong river. The perchlorate was detected in Nakdong river and ranged from ND to $82.1{\mu}g/L$. The highest concentration was observed in Wheguan. The perchlorate concentration was decreased with the down stream of Nakdong river. Three different virgin activated carbons made of each coal(Calgon), coconut(Samchully) and wood(Picabiol) based activated carbon(AC) were tested for an adsorption performance of perchlorate in a continuous adsorption column. Breakthrough behavior was investigated that the breakthrough points of coal, coconut and wood based AC as 2,300 bed volumn(BV), 719 BV and 288 BV respectively. Adsorption capacity(X/M) of real, coconut and wood based AC was observed. The experimental results of adsorption capacity showed that coal based AC was highest$(768.2{\mu}g/g)$, coconut based AC was intermediate$(299{\mu}g/g)$ and wood based AC was lowest$(99.2{\mu}g/g)$. Moreover, carbon usage rates(CURs) for coal, coconut and wood based AC had been shown as 0.71 g/day, 2.16 g/day and 3.45 g/day respectively. The constant characteristic of the system, k of coal, coconut and wood based ACs were found to be 307.2, 102.5 and 94.2, respectively.
$\beta$-Glucosidase from Laetiporus sulphureus among the enzymes related to lignocellulosic biomass degradation to sugars for using alternative bioethanol production was characterized. The highest activity of $\beta$-glucosidase was obtained on cellobiose at shaking culture. For the characterization and purification of $\beta$-glucosidase culture solution was concentrated and then purified by FPLC using ion exchange and size exclusion column. According to the results of SDS-PAGE, native PAGE and microfluidic system of purified enzyme, protein band was observed at about 132 kDa. Optimal pH and temperature of purified $\beta$-glucosi-dase were 5.0 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. In the kinetic properties of $\beta$-glucosidase on various substrates such as sophorose, gentiobiose and cellobiose, $K_m$ was 0.81, 1.07 and 1.70 mM, respectively.
