A wood-plastic composite (WPC) paver block was manufactured using wood chips waste through an extrusion process, and it was intended to be used for paving in basic rest areas. The first stage in this study covered preliminary tests in terms of flexural strength and dimensional swelling to determine the optimal WPC compounding mix condition, by variation of the WPC ingredients. Next, three different paver blocks including the WPC block, a non-porous cement block, and a porous cement block were tested in terms of various material properties in the laboratory. Finally, two outdoor test sections of the proposed paver blocks were prepared to simulate a basic rest area. Test results indicated that the flexural strength of the WPC paver blocks was about 1.6 times greater than that of the tested cement paver blocks. The WPC block pavement was unaffected by water buoyance as well as volume expansion due to swelling. Results from the impact absorbance test and light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) test clearly showed that the WPC block paving system marginally satisfied the comfortable and safe hardness range from the pedestrians' perspective, while the results demonstrated that it is structurally sound for application as a road paving block.

In this study, an experimental study was carried out to evaluate the bond shear performance according to the shear connector between the glue-laminated timber and steel interface. Ten block shear specimens were fabricated according to the configuration of the adhesive surface of wood and steel. In addition, four test specimens were produced according to the main variable shape of the wood-concrete shear connector. As a result of the block shear test, the shear strength of the steel-wood adhesive is shown to have a shear performance greater than the wood-wood shear strength. As a result of the push-out test according to the shape of the shear connector, the shear strength increased linearly with the attachment area. The complete composite behavior between the glued-laminated timber and the steel can be secured.
The delamination along the annual ring on the cross-section of laminae and the bonding strength according to the tangential angle between laminae were evaluated for the production of 3-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) using domestic larch. Since there is no standard for CLT in Korea, the production and test of specimens for bonding strength followed the standard procedure of "Structural glued laminated timber" (KS F 3021). The standard specifies to exclude any measurement from the cracks of timbers resulted from drying or knots during delamination test of the glued laminated timbers. However, the failure of cross-sectional tissues along the annual rings was observed near the glue-line of all specimens during the delamination test. Because this phenomenon can generate defects in the CLT that may be exposed to various temperatures and relative humidities after the actual construction, the delamination percentage was measured by including this wood failure. As a result, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed inward was the lowest, which was around 13%, regardless of the annual ring direction of the middle lamina. On the other hand, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed outward was the highest, which was around 26%. Furthermore, end-split occurred in the outer lamina during the drying process of the boiling delamination test, which affected the delamination percentage. Therefore, the soaking delamination test was found to be more appropriate for evaluating the delamination strength of CLT. The block shear strength of larch CLT was $3.9{\pm}0.9$ MPa on average, which was 46% lower than the block shear strength requirement (7.1 MPa) of the standard, but satisfied the criteria of the block shear strength (3.5 MPa) of the European Standard (prEN 16351: 2013).
Block-glued glulam is a structural material that can be used as a construction member of a large-section wooden building, which is produced by edgewise bonding of two or more glulam beam elements. The edgewise bonding performance of the block-glued glulam was examined through delamination test and block shear strength test. According to the test results, the block-glued glulam that was manufactured with 1.5 MPa of compressive pressure after applying $500g/m^2$ of Resorcinol adhesive showed the best edgewise bonding performance. The block-glued glulam produced in a good edgewise bonding condition was compared with a control glulam with the same section modulus for bending strength performance. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) in bending was similar to that of the control glulam. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of the block-glued glulam was higher by 27% than that of the control glulam. No interfacial failure or cohesive failure were observed in the edgewise bonding layer.
As glulam is a woody material, it is necessary to be more careful in a gluing process. It takes 6-7 hours at $40-60^{\circ}C$ to harden PRF resin used in making structural glulam, and about 24 hours at room temperature. In the present process which can not use a press continuously, reducing the hardening time is necessary to increase production. The experiment was done to compare the adhesive properties of PRF resin and MUF resin through bending test, block shear strength test and water soaking test. In comparing the bending strength of prediction MOE is 1.2 times higher that actual MOE. PRF and MUF do not show significant difference in MOE and MOR, and in block shear strength test, such as shear strength and wood failure rate. However, in water soaking and boiling water soaking tests PRF and MUF show the significant difference in delamination rate.
This study was performed to determine the withdrawal loads and strengths on the effect of dried wooden dowel. The test block was manufactured from 15 mm thick domestic wood and particleboard. Dowels of 6, 8 and 10 mm in diameter are made of korean castanea, korean pine and tulip wood. Research reported here indicates that withdrawal loads increase, but withdrawal strengths decrease, as the dowel diameter increases. This study also indicates that withdrawal load and strength of dried wooden dowel showed over 10% increase compared to those of normal conditioned dowel. However, there was an exception for the case of korean pine test block with dried tulip wood dowel. Meanwhile, the dried wooden dowel withdrawal loads and strengths for particleboard test blocks show 6~14.4% and 6.2~18.2% increase, compared to those of normal conditioned dowel, respectively.
This study evaluated the multi-bonding performances of timbers as well as those of reinforcement and timber to obtain data for preparing guidelines regarding the use of timbers as large structural members. For the multi-bonding performances of timbers, four types of bonding surfaces were prepared according to the pith position. For the bonding performances of FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic)/steel plate and timber, a total of 11 types of specimens were produced for the selection of the appropriate adhesive. The bonding performances of the produced specimens were evaluated through a water soaking delamination test, a water boiling delamination test, and a block shear strength test. The test results showed that the bonding strength of the bonding surface according to the pith position was highest in the specimen for which the two sections with the pith at the center of the cross-section on timber and between the bonding surfaces (the tangential and radial sections were mixed) were bonded. Furthermore, the specimens for which the section (radial section) with the pith on the bonding surface of the timber was bonded showed a high delamination percentage. The results of the block shear strength test showed that the bonding section did not have a significant effect on the shear strength, and that the measured wood failure percentage was higher than the KS standard value. The PVAc adhesive showed the highest bonding strength between larix timber and GFRP (glass FRP). Furthermore, the epoxy and polyurethane adhesives showed good bonding strength for CFRP (carbon FRP) and structure steel, respectively.
Safety, resilience and comfort of pedestrian were assessed by the British Pendulum Test and SB/GB factor test at 8 kinds of sidewalk pavement. Sidewalk paving materials were normal concrete, porous concrete, concrete block, soil concrete, asphalt, rubber chip/resin mixture, wood chip/resin mixture and floor tile. In addition, a survey was conducted to investigate the perception of pedestrians on the sidewalk paving material. As a result, while the skid resistance value was measured in the most 60BPN above, the floor tile showed a low value of about 30BPN. The ratios of SB factor to GB factor of the elastic pavements(rubber/resin mixture and wood chip/resin mixture) appeared to be relatively large when compared with those of the conventional sidewalks. The survey showed that respondents perceived as more safe and comfortable elastic pavements compared to conventional pavements. Approximately 50% of respondents answered that hardened soil pavement was the most environmentally friendly.
Wooden dowels are commonly used to join the wooden members together in many types of structures, But little information is available concerning their holding properties in domestic wood. This study was performed to determine the withdrawal loads and strengths on the effect of diameter of dowel and hole clearance. The test block was manufactured from 15 mm thick korean red pine and korean pine. The dowel was manufactured 6, 8 and 10 mm diameters from korean castanea, korean pine and tuliptree. Research reported here indicates that withdrawal loads increase, but withdrawal strengths decrease, in a linear fashion as the dowel diameter increases. This study also indicates that dowel withholding load and strength increase in a linear fashion as a hole clearance decreases.
This study was carried out to investigate whether adhesive used in manufacturing glulam can be used to bond wood and GFRP, when considering working process and economical efficiency. The six different glulams were manufactured, changing the adhesives and the mixing ratios of the adhesives, and investigated by the block shear test and the delamination of the water soaking or boiling water soaking. The three glulams were manufactured, using the resocinol resin based adhesive, the PVAc resin based adhesive and the epoxy resin adhesive, and the other three glulams, using the adhesives mixing resocinol resin and PVAc resin. The block shear strength is higher than $7.1N/mm^2$ in all types, which is standard of KS F3021. However, in the wood failure the block shear strength was the highest as 65.9% in the PVAc. The delamination of glulams glued with PVAc adhesive, which was 1.08% in water soaking and 4.16% in boiling water soaking, was lower than 5.00% which is the standard of KS F 3021, and the adhesive strength is good. In glulams glued with only resocinol resin adhesive, the wood layers were good as 1.26% in the water soaking delamination and 0.00% in the boiling water soaking delamination. The GFRP layers were not good as 21.85% in the water soaking delamination but were good as 1.45% in the boiling water soaking delamination.
