  • As the number of Mobile IP users is expected to grow, the signaling overhead associated with mobility management in the wireless Internet is bound to grow. And since the wireless link has far less bandwidth resources and limited scalability compared to the wired network link, the signaling overhead associated with mobility management has a severe effect on the wireless link. In this paper, we propose IP-Grouping algorithm that can greatly reduce the signaling cost in the wireless link as Access Routers(ARs) with a large rate of handoff are grouped into a Group Zone. Based on the numerical analysis and simulation, we show that the wireless signaling cost in the IP-Grouping is much lower than that of the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 under various condition.

  • IP-based Wireless Sensor Networks (IP-WSNs) are gaining importance for their broad range of applications in health care, home automation, environmental monitoring, industrial control, vehicle telematics, and agricultural monitoring. In all these applications, a fundamental issue is the mobility in the sensor network, particularly with regards to energy efficiency. Because of the energy inefficiency of network-based mobility management protocols, they can be supported via IP-WSNs. In this paper, we propose a network-based mobility-supported IP-WSN protocol called mSFP, or the mSFP: "Multicasting-supported Inter-Domain Mobility Management Scheme in Sensor-based Fast Proxy Mobile IPv6 Networks". Based on [8,20], we present its network architecture and evaluate its performance by considering the signaling and mobility cost. Our analysis shows that the proposed scheme reduces the signaling cost, total cost, and mobility cost. With respect to the number of IP-WSN nodes, the proposed scheme reduces the signaling cost by 7% and the total cost by 3%. With respect to the number of hops, the proposed scheme reduces the signaling cost by 6.9%, the total cost by 2.5%, and the mobility cost by 1.5%. With respect to the number of IP-WSN nodes, the proposed scheme reduces the mobility cost by 1.6%.

  • As a result of the prevalence of smartphone, various mobile services became faster by LTE networks. Because many mobile devices are used more wireless services, heavy signaling traffic for authentication could be generated. Authentication is an important factor in wireless networks to identify devices; it is the start of wireless networks. This paper analyzes previous patterns for more effective authentication in accessing of another external networks. We propose a fast authentication scheme for minimizing of signaling cost between the authentication server and external networks. And we calculate the rate of authentication occurrence in LTE networks using mathematical modeling as well as the change of signaling cost for authentication in various network environments. Finally, we calculate the optimized number of authentication data and show the effectiveness for authentication signaling costs.

  • Cost-effective mobility management for the roaming mobile users is very important in the seamless services on next-generation wireless network (NGWN). MIPv6 (Mobile IPv6) is one of the mobility management schemes proposed by the IETF (The Internet Engineering Task Force) and various IPv6-based mobility management schemes have been developed. They are directly involved with data transfer from MN (Mobile Node). In this paper, two kinds of schemes in analyzing of mobility management schemes are proposed. The signaling transfer and packet delivery procedures for each mobility management schemes are analyzed, respectively. The signaling cost for mobility management schemes are calculated, and the cost of each protocol are analyzed numerically. In other word, applying the sum of signaling cost and packet delivery cost to each mobility management scheme, their costs are analyzed. Finally, our performance evaluation results that the network-based mobility management scheme shows better performance in terms of overall cost.

  • Handling paging mechanism at the IP layer (i.e., IP paging) makes it possible to support heterogeneous wireless access technologies, providing energy-saving and reduced location registration signaling overhead over IP-based mobile networks. However, IP paging may rather cause adverse effects under active communication environments because of significant paging signaling overhead and frequent paging delay. Therefore, in order to solve these problems, a cost-effective IP paging scheme is proposed in this paper, which enables a mobile node to perform selective registration and paging based on its profile information. Numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme has apparent potential to mitigate considerable paging signaling overhead and frequent paging delay in IP-based hierarchical mobile networks.

  • For mobile multimedia services, wireless ATM(Asynchronous transfer Mode) network is studied actively. In wireless ATM network, the existing signaling protocols generate heavy traffics for HLR due to the centralized structure that all signaling loads mush be handled in HLR(Home Location Register). Also, centralized structure causes critical connection setup delays. Thus, it is important that wireless ATM reduces the connection setup delays occurred due to high traffic loads of signaling based on distributed processing. In this thesis, we propose a cache strategy for call delivery as well as the cache updates of registration based on ATM multicasting and compares the cost of cache scheme with that of conventional scheme. Our study shows that cache scheme has better performance than the conventional methods in the case that the portable mobility is low and traffic density is large.

  • Next-generation wireless/mobile networks are envisioned to have an IP-based infrastructure. One of the research challenges for next-generation all IP-based networks is the design of intelligent mobility management technologies that have a seamless mobility and minimal signaling overhead. Recently, HMIPv6 was proposed by the IETF for efficient mobility management. HMIPv6 reduces the amount of signaling and improves the performance of MIPv6 in terms of handover latency. However the MAP can be a single point of performance bottleneck when there are a lot of local movements. HMIPv6 can cause signaling overhead due to the unnecessary location update of idle mobile nodes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the dynamic paging Mobile IPv6 that reduces the signaling cost of the unnecessary location updates using IP paging and organizes dynamically optimal MAP area according to user's mobility and traffic. We show performance results that are obtained from the average total location update cost and packet delivery cost.

  • The Fast Handover protocol [1] provides seameless handover in wireless If networks by minimizing handover latency, which uses anticipation based on layer 2 (L2) trigger information. Therefore, it incurs higher signaling costs compared with the basic Mobile U protocol. Furthermore, since the L2 trigger is based on fluctuating wireless channel states, the handover anticipation may sometimes be incorrect. In the case of incorrect anticipation, unnecessary buffer space may be used for the purpose of providing a smooth handover. Therefore, it is essentical to analyze these overhead costs, in order to evaluate and compare the performance of Fast Handover with that of the basic Mobile U protocol. In this paper, we analyzed the overhead associated with Fast Handover including the signaling cost and the packet delivery cost. We formulated these costs based on a timing diagram and compared Fast Handover with basic Mobile Ipv6 in terms of their packet loss rates and buffer requirements. Also, we studied the impact of the L2 triggering time on the total overhead cost.

  • In this paper, the new location management scheme based on region and movement threshold has been proposed in order to minimize the required cost to handle the resource location management signaling traffics under the wire/wireless convergent networks when the users are moving around the cold and hot regions. In this scheme, the sequential paging is supposed to be performed according to the movement threshold which can be changed in accordance with the number of movements that each mobile user had made while it is moving around the resource regions. With the proposed scheme, the cost of managing the location management traffics and efficient spectrum assignment overhead can be minimized by placing signaling traffics for location managements and also allocating radio spectrum considering individual movement behaviors.
