In this paper, a wireless sensing system for structural field evaluation and rating of bridges is presented. The system uses a wireless platform integrated with traditional analogue sensors including strain gages and accelerometers along with the operating software. A wireless vehicle position indicator is developed using a tri-axial accelerometer node that is mounted on the test vehicle, and was used for identifying the moving truck position during load testing. The developed software is capable of calculating the theoretical bridge rating factors based on AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Rating specifications, and automatically produces the field adjustment factor through load testing data. The sensing system along with its application in bridge deck rating was successfully demonstrated on the Evansville Bridge in West Virginia. A finite element model was conducted for the test bridge, and was used to calculate the load distribution factors of the bridge deck after verifying its results using field data. A confirmation field test was conducted on the same bridge and its results varied by only 3% from the first test. The proposed wireless sensing system proved to be a reliable tool that overcomes multiple drawbacks of conventional wired sensing platforms designed for structural load evaluation of bridges.

Wireless MEMS sensors have common features such as wireless communication, data measurement, embedded processing, battery-based self-power, and low cost, and increased measurement effectiveness. Wireless MEMS sensors enable efficient SHM without interfering with location because there is no requirement for triboelectric noise and cumbersome cables. However, there is little research on the communication distance with sensors and data. For instance, existing researches have limited communication distance experiments in civil engineering bridges. It is also necessary to investigate the characteristics of dynamic behavior and the communication distance of architectural structures with different wireless transmission/reception environments. Therefore, in a building structure with walls and slabs instead of open spaces, MEMS sensors and data loggers were used as distance experiments where communication disturbance between the vertical slab and the horizontal wall could actually be communicated.

Wireless LAN is a rather mature communication technology that connects mobile terminals. A typical wireless LAN system is composed of one AP and more than one terminals, which is called a BSS. Terminals near to an AP can receive high rate data but terminals far from an AP may not receive data with guaranteed high speed rate because received signal strength is weakened. This paper proposes a method to allow high speed data transmission by grouping terminals and using part of wireless terminals as repeaters. We compare and analyze proposed grouping algorithms based on Depth First Search and Breadth First Search via simulations. A grouping algorithm based on Breadth First Search is shown to be more effective in term of efficiency and coverage.
In this paper, we present an optical encryption and information authentication of 3D objects considering wireless channel characteristics. Using the optical encryption such as double random phase encryption (DRPE) and 3D integral imaging, a 3D scene with encryption can be transmitted. However, the wireless channel causes the noise and fading effects of the 3D transmitted encryption data. When the 3D encrypted data is transmitted via wireless channel, the information may be lost or distorted because there are a lot of factors such as channel noise, propagation fading, and so on. Thus, using digital modulation and maximum likelihood (ML) detection, the noise and fading effects are mitigated, and the encrypted data is estimated well at the receiver. In addition, using computational volumetric reconstruction of integral imaging and advanced correlation filters, the noise effects may be remedied and 3D information may be authenticated. To prove our method, we carry out an optical experiment for sensing 3D information and simulation for optical encryption with DRPE and authentication with a nonlinear correlation filter. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on optical encryption and information authentication of 3D objects considering the wireless channel characteristics.

In this paper, we propose the algorithms which determine 1) the efficient anchor-node visiting route of mobile sink in terms of energy supply and 2) the efficient energy amount to be charged to each anchor node, by using the information of each anchor node and the mobile sink. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using mobile sinks can be deployed in more challenging environments such as those that are isolated or dangerous, and can also achieve a balanced energy consumption among sensors which leads to prolong the network lifetime. Most mobile sinks visit only some anchor nodes which store the data collected by the nearby sensor nodes because of their limited energy. The problem of these schemes is that the lifetime of the anchor nodes can be shorten due to the increased energy consumption, which rapidly reduces the overall lifetime of WSN. This study utilizes a mobile sink capable of wireless power transmission to solve this problem, so a mobile sink can gather data from anchor nodes while charging energy to them. Through the performance verification, it is confirmed that the number of blackout nodes and the amount of collected data are greatly improved regardless of the size of the network.

The current cellular communications are optimized for low mobility users, meaning that their performance is degraded at high speed. Therefore, passengers in a high-speed train experience very poor radio link quality due to the significantly large number of simultaneous handovers. In addition, wireless data traffic is expanding exponentially in trains, subways and buses due to the widespread use of smartphones and mobile devices. To solve the inherent problem of cellular communication networks and meet the growing traffic demand, this paper proposes the mobile hotspot network of a millimeter-wave communication system as a mobile wireless backhaul. This paper describes the physical layer design of uplink and downlink in the proposed system, and the performances of uplink and downlink are evaluated under Rician fading channel conditions. The implemented baseband prototype of the proposed millimeter-wave communication modem is presented. This system can provide a Gbps data rate service in high-speed trains carrying hundreds of wireless Internet users.

A structural monitoring system based on cheap and wireless monitoring system is investigated in this paper. Due to low-cost and low power consumption, micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) is suitable for wireless monitoring and the use of MEMS and wireless communication can reduce system cost and simplify the installation for structural health monitoring. For system identification using wireless MEMS, a finite element (FE) model updating method through correlation with the initial analytical model of the structure to the measured one is used. The system identification using wireless MEMS is evaluated experimentally using a three storey frame model. Identification results are compared to ones using data measured from traditional accelerometers and results indicate that the system identification using wireless MEMS estimates system parameters with reasonable accuracy. Another smart sensor considered in this paper for structural health monitoring is Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) which is a type of piezoelectric material. PZT patches have been applied for the health monitoring of structures owing to their simultaneous sensing/actuating capability. In this paper, the system identification for building structures by using PZT patches functioning as sensor only is presented. The FE model updating method is applied with the experimental data obtained using PZT patches, and the results are compared to ones obtained using wireless MEMS system. Results indicate that sensing by PZT patches yields reliable system identification results even though limited information is available.
This study introduces a novel approach for locating damage in a structure using wireless sensor system with local level computational capability to alleviate data traffic load on the centralized computation. Smart wireless sensor systems, capable of iterative damage-searching, mimic an optimization process in a decentralized way. The proposed algorithm tries to detect damage in a structure by monitoring abnormal increases in strain measurements from a group of wireless sensors. Initially, this clustering technique provides a reasonably effective sensor placement within a structure. Sensor clustering also assigns a certain number of master sensors in each cluster so that they can constantly monitor the structural health of a structure. By adopting a voting system, a group of wireless sensors iteratively forages for a damage location as they can be activated as needed. Since all of the damage searching process occurs within a small group of wireless sensors, no global control or data traffic to a central system is required. Numerical simulation demonstrates that the newly developed searching algorithm implemented on wireless sensors successfully localizes stiffness damage in a plate through the local level reconfigurable function of smart sensors.

Recently, the wireless data communication infrastructure appearing before the footlights crosses the limit in the wire and develop into the fast speed. Particularly, the issue about the u-Healthcare service using this increases. And the investigation of the quality guarantee of the wireless data network is important for the smooth service providing. However, the quality control research about the wireless network is insufficient because the existing research performs the quality control between the termination about the wired network continually. This paper presented the mobile service quality measurement reference considering the radio environment, that is the method for satisfying the quality guarantee of the wireless data network user offered the u-Healthcare service as the research about this and user needs. For this purpose, wireless data quality measurement indicator and standard was selected. The quality measure evaluation plan was presented according to the service. And each service presented the quality index especially.
In wireless and mobile environments, data broadcasting is recognized as an effective way for data dissemination due to its benefits to bandwidth efficiency, energy-efficiency, and scalability. In this paper, we address the problem of delayed query processing raised by tree-based index structures in wireless broadcast environments, which increases the access time of the mobile clients. We propose a novel distributed index structure and a clustering strategy for streaming XML data which enable energy and latency-efficient broadcast of XML data. We first define the DIX node structure to implement a fully distributed index structure which contains tag name, attributes, and text content of an element as well as its corresponding indices. By exploiting the index information in the DIX node stream, a mobile client can access the wireless stream in a shorter latency. We also suggest a method of clustering DIX nodes in the stream, which can further enhance the performance of query processing over the stream in the mobile clients. Through extensive performance experiments, we demonstrate that our approach is effective for wireless broadcasting of XML data and outperforms the previous methods.
