  • Time synchronization plays an important role in mobile communication systems, particularly, when an accurate time-division mechanism among the communication entities is required. We present a new time synchronization algorithm for a wireless mobile ad-hoc network assuming that communication link is managed by a time-slot reservation-based medium access control protocol. The central idea is to reduce time synchronization packet collisions by exploiting the advantages found in reference broadcasting. In addition, we adopt a sophisticated clock updating scheme to ensure the time synchronization convergence. To verify the performance of our algorithm, a set of network simulations has been performed under various mobile ad-hoc network scenarios using the OPNET. The results obtained from the simulations show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional TSF method in terms of synchronization accuracy and convergence time.

  • For the realization of future intelligent transportation systems, fine-grained lane-by-lane traffic monitoring and control functionalities are among the most important technology barriers to overcome. To satisfy the accuracy requirement for traffic monitoring, a GNSS receiver network is designed. The designed receiver network consists of three different types of entities; reference server, broadcaster, and client. For deployment flexibility, all the entities utilize the international message standard RTCM SC-104 version 3.0. For fine-grained traffic monitoring, the client is designed to utilize position-domain carrier-smoothed-code filters to provide accurate vehicle coordinates in spite of frequent addages and outages of visible satellites. An experiment result is presented to evaluate the positioning accuracy of the proposed method.

  • 6LoWPAN (IPv6 Low-power Wireless Personal Area Network) is IPv6 packets transmission technology at Sensor network over the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard MAC and Physical layer. Adaptation layer between IP layer and MAC layer performs fragmentation and reassembly of packet for transmit IPv6 packets. RFC4944, IETF 6LoWPAN WG standard document define packet fragmentation and reassembly. In this paper, we propose the 6PASim (6LoWPAN Packet Simulator) to perform IPv6 packet fragmentation and reassembly for performance evaluation. The 6PASim consist of two parts. One is Packet_Transmit_module that makes IEEE 802.15.4 frames the IPv6 packet from upper layer, and transmit its. and the another is Packet_Receive_module that reassembles transferred frames and completes original IPv6 packets. we can evaluate frame transmit rate and amount of control message through 6PASim. The result of simulation shows the SRM (Selective Retransmission Method) scheme provider better performance than IRM (Immediate Retransmission Method) scheme.

  • In wireless sensor networks, the data transmitted from the sensor nodes are susceptible to corruption by errors which caused of noisy channels and other factors. In view of the severe energy constraint in Sensor Networks, it is important to use the error control scheme of the energy efficiently. In this paper, we presented RS (Reed-Solomon) codes in terms of their BER performance and power consumption. RS codes work by adding extra redundancy to the data. The encoded data can be stored or transmitted. It could have errors introduced, when the encoded data is recovered. The added redundancy allows a decoder to detect which parts of the received data is corrupted, and corrects them. The number of errors which are able to be corrected by RS code can determine by added redundancy. The results of experiment validate the performance of proposed method to provide high degree of reliability in low-power communication. We could predict the lifetime of RS codes which transmitted at 32 byte a 1 minutes. RS(15, 13), RS(31, 27), RS(63, 57), RS(127,115), and RS(255,239) can keep the days of 173.7, 169.1, 163.9, 150.7, and 149.7 respectively. The evaluation based on packet reception ratio (PRR) indicates that the RS(255,239) extends a sensor node's communication range by up about 3 miters.

  • With the recent increased risk of livestock disease spread and human infection, livestock disease control has become very important. Consequently, there has been an increased attention on an implantable real-time monitoring and traceability system for individual cattle. Therefore, we have developed a robust monitoring and traceability system based on an implantable MFAN/RFID sensor tag. Our design combines the MFAN technology that is capable of robust wireless communication within cattle sheds and the 900MHz RFID technology that is capable of wireless communication without battery. In MFAN/RFID implantable sensor tag monitoring system, UHF sensor tag is implanted under the skin and accurately monitors the body temperature and biological changes without being affected by external environment. In order to acquire power needed by the tag, we install a MFAN/RFID tranceiver on the neck of cattle. The MFAN coordinator passes through the MFAN node and the RFID-reader-combined MFAN/RFID transceiver and transmits/receives the data and power for the sensor tag. The data stored in the MFAN coordinator is transmitted via the internet to the livestock history monitoring system, where it is stored and managed. By developing this system, we hope to alleviate the problems related to livestock disease control.

  • Monitoring and control of the greenhouse environment play a decisive role in greenhouse crop production processes. The network system for greenhouse control was developed by using recent technologies of networking and wireless communications. In this paper, a remote monitoring and control system for greenhouse using a smartphone and a computer with internet has been developed. The system provides real-time remote greenhouse integrated management service which collects greenhouse environment information and controls greenhouse facilities based on sensors and equipments network. Graphical user interface for an integrated management system was designed with bases on the HMI and the experimental results showed that a sensor data and device status were collected by integrated management in real-time. Because the sensor data and device status can be displayed on a web page, transmitted using the server program to remote computer and mobile smartphone at the same time. The monitored-data can be downloaded, analyzed and saved from server program in real-time via mobile phone or internet at a remote place. Performance test results of the greenhouse control system has confirmed that all work successfully in accordance with the operating conditions. And data collections and display conditions, event actions, crops and equipments monitoring showed reliable results.

  • Geographic routing has been considered as an efficient, simple, and scalable routing protocol for wireless sensor networks since it exploits pure local location information instead of global topology information to route data packets. Geographic routing requires the sources nodes to be aware of the location of sinks. Most existing geographic routing protocols merely assume that source nodes are aware of the locations of sinks. How can source nodes get the locations of sinks was not addressed in detail. In this paper, we propose a sink location service via circle path for geographic routing in wireless sensor networks. In this scheme, a sink sends a Sink Location Announcement (SLA) message along a circle path, and a source node sends a Sink Location Query (SLQ) message along a straight path that certainly passes through the circle path. By this way we can guarantee the SLQ path and SLA path have at least one crossing point. The node located on the crossing point of the two paths informs the source node the sink location. This procedure can correctly work in any irregular profile sensor networks such as network that has holes or irregular shape by some rules. Simulation results show that our protocol is superior to other protocols in terms of energy consumption and control overhead.

  • Route failure is mainly caused by mobility of mobile host in ad hoc networks. Route failure, which may lead to sudden packet losses and delays, is losing the route from source to destination. In this situation, TCP assumes that congestion has occurred within the network and also initiates the congestion control procedures. Congestion control algorithm provides the means for the source to deal with lost packets. TCP performance in ad hoc environments will be degraded as TCP source cannot distinguish congestion from route failure. In this paper, we propose TCP-P as pre-detection approach to deal with route failure. TCP-P freezes TCP through pre-detection of route failure. Route failure information of the proposed mechanism is obtained not by routing protocol but by MAC protocol. The intermediated node, obtaining route failure information by its MAC layer, relays the information to TCP source and lets TCP source stop the congestion control algorithm. Results reveal that TCP-P responding with proactive manner outperforms other approaches in terms of communication throughput under the presence of node mobility.

  • This paper analyzes the hazard related to train control, the functional requirements for atrain control system(TCS) and the automatic train protection(ATP) functional allocation that ensures the interoperability of a radio communications-based TCS. In addition, the interoperability can be obtained using wireless communications technology standards and standardized functional allocations of TCS performed on the wayside and onboard. Using this information, an integrated operating system for a rail network can be constructed. The functional allocations of TCS that support interoperability, require hazard analysis of TCS and definition of the system requirements. The hazard factors for a TCS are confirmed through setting the train safety space control and train speed limit excess. Furthermore, this paper determines the impact of the hazard factors on the TCS and, defines the functional requirements for the TCS subsystems and the ATP wayside and onboard functional allocations.

  • In this paper, two novel subsurface antennas for remote management of underground facilities using PCS and cellular wireless network are proposed. The proposed subsurface antenna is a dual band circular patch which is inserted and molded for the protection of the antenna into a metal such as a manhole cover. The antenna is designed considering the resonant frequency shift of the antenna due to the insertion and molding. The measured return loss and receiving power of the fabricated antenna comparison with a dipole shows that two proposed subsurface antenna can be used for remote management of underground facilities using PCS and cellular systems.
